Refused Mounjaro because I’m diabetic

My GP said I don’t meet the criteria as I only have two of the five conditions required to get mountjaro on the NHS (hypertension and type 2 diabetes). I decided to pay for it and signed up to Asda but they’ve just refused me because I’ve got diabetes. How the heck am I supposed to get this drug?? I’m obese and becoming unwell and my mobility is reduced. I’m desperate to change. Any advice please?

Other providers will accept type 2 diabetics I’m fairly sure. DM is type 2 diabetic and gets hers through Juniper, although it isn’t the cheapest provider.

Are you on medication for your diabetes already? That may be why they’ve refused, rather than because you’re diabetic.
Have you spoken to the diabetes nurse? They may be able to agree to stop or change any medication that may interfere so you can get it privately, as long as you agree to more frequent monitoring for a time. Our diabetic nurse is in a better position to deal with the meds than the GPs in our practice tbh, they are often more knowledgeable. I’d see about booking a diabetic review with the nurse in your shoes.

I'm type 1 and take insulin and get it via The Family Chemist.

I would try other providers, as many people posting here are Type 2 and have been able to get a private prescription. Sometimes the larger providers like Asda will refuse for certain conditions because it’s simpler for them.

You could ask the NHS team who manage your diabetes if Mounjaro is an option for you, but my understanding is that if your diabetes is well controlled that they won’t prescribe Mounjaro. If they do prescribe, it will be to control your blood sugar levels not for weight loss, so they may be reluctant to increase your dose for weight loss alone.

Avoid high street pharmacies if you have diabetes. Both an online company and face 2 face pharmacy served me I just wasn't encouraged to go up in dose which to be fair suits me.

Private hospitals may well help as well after all they wouldn't refuse to operate on a patient with type 2 diabetes - I know when I looked into Nuffield Health for a weight loss surgery consultation, it came about they did offer the weight loss injections. (Yes more costly but if needs must)
Weight Loss Prescription Medication Program UK - Kent.

Good luck but I imagine if you try somewhere else you'll get accepted, just hope this isn't the start of the shortage. Both Asda and Boots rejected me due to the then diabetes, around the time it was getting harder to get hold of Saxenda.

Thanks everyone, appreciate it. I’ll look into other providers. It’s so disheartening to be rejected when I do clearly need help and am desperate for it.

Ps Asda is SO expensive - have a look on monj.co.uk for cheapest rates x

Hello. I had the same thing with numan refusing me. I tried pharmacy2u on the suggestion of someone on here and they have prescribed for me. I have an appointment with the diabetes nurse at our surgery next week so that I can find out if I should continue to take metformin too. Pharmacy2U will inform your GP surgery.

I had the same issue with Asda and it's ridiculous. Their questionnaire actually asks if you're diabetic then continues with your application. At no point does it say that they don't prescribe to diabetics, yet that's the reason why I was declined a week later. Not because of the medication I was on for my diabetes, but because of diabetes full stop.

I went with Med Express in the end and they've been great.

booksnpepsimax · 29/07/2025 07:57

I’m with shemed and they prescribed to me, I’m type 2 and take metformin.

Spirallingdownwards · 29/07/2025 07:58

Please don't just take it without the go ahead from a doctor. My DP is diabetic and advice is not to have it because of the stroke risk associated with it if taking certain other medications for blood pressure and diabetes.

gingercat02 · 29/07/2025 08:00

It's prescribed for T2 if you have a BMI of >35 and poorly controlled HbA1c on 3 or more oral medications. We give it to loads of people in GP practice

Periperi2025 · 29/07/2025 12:31

My understanding is that some companies are pharmacy led and some are doctor led.
Pharmacy led companies will be working to PGDs (patient group directives) which are a case of if you tick the boxes you can have it if you don't then they can't supply it.
Doctors have much more flexibility.
So Google "doctor/GP led mounjaro" and try those companies instead.

I'm type 2 and take metformin. I've just got approved with voy. So far they seem very good was a little bit more expensive for first dose but not much more.

Edited

I suspect it's something they're having to catch up with so advice isn't standard across the NHS. I spoke to my GP beforehand and explained that I was going on it and whether it would cause any issues with the medication I was taking, including meds for blood pressure. He sounded quite nonplussed that I was even checking and was quite happy for me to proceed.
