Started MJ a week ago and now told I'm pre-diabetic

I started MJ last Tuesday because I have about 7 stone to lose (6.5 st now as ive lost 6lbs this week).
My 2nd dose is due tomorrow. I've come home today to find a letter from my GP stating I'm pre-diabetic with my HbA1c blood test result as 44 mmol/mol.
I have to attend a Diabetes Prevention Programme.

Please tell me I'm doing the right things now to reverse this.

Also, any advice would be most appreciated.

Yes, I think that it’s very likely that the Mounjaro and the dietary changes that it will enable you to make will help with the pre diabetes. I know there are several people who have posted on threads here that their HbA1c results have improved on Mounjaro to the point where they are no longer considered pre diabetic.

I had exactly the same HbAc1 result a few weeks ago and was offered that course, I turned it down, there is nothing to be gained from going, I’m already 4st down, that HbAc1 number will only improve. All they’ll tell you is to lose weight and you’re already doing that. They’ll probably chuck in some dubious NHS dietary advice as well. I’d bin it off if I were you!

My HBA1C was 45 in june 2022, my GP didn't tell me, I found out 2 months ago on the app after I changed GPs!
I had already been on mounjaro for 7.5 months by then and when I got to 10mg it resolved all my high blood sugar symptoms and my high BP was resolved immediately starting it.
Yes you are doing the best for your prediabetes by using mounjaro as it works to increase insulin sensitivity and insulin itself. I've lost 3 stones and down to bmi 24.8, I've also had inflammatory conditions like IBS resolved.

Thanks for the advice.

@Fffreeeeezing I panicked and signed up for the programme, but you're right, I know what they will say about eating right and losing weight.

I do have one question though. I started drinking protein shakes because of MJ but now I'm wondering whether I should stop because of how sweet they are. Will that affect my pre-diabetic diagnosis?

Unless you've found really unusual ones, most protein shakes are sugar free and use sweeteners. Check the ingredients to reassure yourself.
My Dr said 44 is fairly borderline so I'm not worried, come back and let me know if I was right to turn the course down, would be interested to know!

MJ will certainly help you to bring your weight down, which in itself will help your HbA1c. However, the best way to approach this is also to not just cut down on how much you eat, but also to be careful about what you eat. There is plenty of good research out there on the internet which will point you towards a diet which restricts carbs by avoiding the obvious things with sugar in such as cakes, biscuits, sweets etc, but to also really cut back on the four big carb sources - bread, potatoes, rice and pasta. These are what are contribute to glucose in your system and I would suggest you try to avoid them.
Your HbA1c will take three months to react.
Do you have your own blood sugar tester? These are pretty cheap and really useful. You can take a fasted blood sugar first thing in the morning to see how it responds over the next few weeks and months. 5.5 to 6.9 is the pre-diabetic range.
When personally I started on MJ, my fasted blood sugar was 6.5. Five weeks later with diet changes and weight loss it is now 4.8
By the way, NHS guidelines are very slow to react to research and still haven't fully acknowledged that carb restriction is the way to go, often continuing to peddle the myth that saturated fats are the problem.
I'm no doctor though, so please do your own research

I was told I was pre-diabetic in November, started MJ in February.
3st down and my HBA1C is down by 8 and I’m no longer pre-diabetic!

MistressRoydon · 22/07/2025 15:12

Another pre diabetic at the start of MJ but now well below - I am delighted! Good luck- the jab really conquered my food noise and helped me with portion control. I would t go back now !

My HbA1c was down from 43 to 32 within two months of starting mj.
