Mounjaro doesn't work for me, alternatives?

I would be grateful for any advice. I had to stop taking Mounjaro a few months ago due to the following side effects:

  • Severe nausea - for the first 3-4 days. it was absolutely awful;
  • Lack of energy to such an extent that it became tough to get out of bed. the house would become a mess,, i would look a mess and it exacerbated the feeling of helplessness, despair, sadness;
  • A feeling of just being very very sad :-(

Has anyone found other injections with less of these side effects?

What dose were you on, you could take half of it instead and see how you get on?

Histoscientist · 19/07/2025 12:57

It interrupts the dopamine pathway which is why you felt like that.
It was the same for me and I'm 9.5 months in now, I don't have kids so my messy house didn't matter and I spent a lot of time exhausted, low, no enthusiasm, laying about inside the house and being anti social for 8 months when not at work until around 6 weeks ago when I discovered L tyrosine which converts to dopamine. Life changer, I'm happier, more energy, going out and doing DIY that I started in March 24 and has taken me over a year to complete! I believe I was low in dopamine for years and it's dropped down further with mounjaro.
You could try wegovy which targets 2 receptors not 3, but I have no experience of it and apparantely has more GI side effects.

SilenceInside · 19/07/2025 13:18

The only other injection that is widely available is Wegovy, which is also a GLP1 but doesn’t have the additional action that Mounjaro has. So may be worth a try.

There is a version of liraglutide which is the medication in Saxenda, called Nevolat, but I don’t know how widely available it is. That’s a daily injection, also a GLP1.

What about orlistat? As others have said these injections interfere with dopamine, which sounds like that's not good for you, my friend can't take injections and is taking this, it's working, but in a different way, just keep away from the fried and fatty stuff.

The nausea and indigestion I coped with by moving back down a part-dose (from 5 to 3.75 for a few weeks, now back on 5 and fine)

The exhaustion and sadness was worrying me.
Then I read a thread on here and someone advised L-tyrosine. I have been taking that for 3 weeks now and I feel happy, more energised and all round better.

Glad it worked for you. I started it almost 2 months ago. It's amazing the change and I've heard the same from others on forums and fbook groups who have also tried it after I mentioned it

If it was you who recommended it - thank you!!! It has honestly made a massive difference!

I believe it was 😊 I've been vocal about it since starting it myself. I found out about the dopamine disruption months ago and one day had enough and literally searched for natural dopamine supplements and then L tyrosine came up and I ordered it not thinking it would do much. What a life saver 🙌

Thanks for this intel! Where do you get L tyrosine from, please?

I bought mine on Amazon. But Holland and Barrett should do them too. If you google L tyrosine in the 'shopping' bit of Google, lots of options should pop up.

Thank you so much! Will check it out x

Wow! Soo many replies. Thank you soo much everyone for taking the time to read and respond. It seems like I’m not alone in feeling sad on Mounjaro (oddly that gives me comfort) I’m just about to get onto Amazon and order l tyrosine. I will also go back to the 2.5 dose and see if this makes a difference.

I really hope if helps, please update with how you get on 😊

@Histoscientist I’ve just bought some based on your post - will be here tomorrow. I’ve been feeling really flat and am lacking energy and motivation, oh and the ability to concentrate.
And anyway, what’s another supplement when I’m already taking psyllium, magnesium complex and a probiotic for constipation/digestion, collagen powder and turmeric for my joints along with a broad spectrum multivitamin. I will be rattling 🤣

I really hope it works! I also take many supplements like magnesium, collagen, turmeric, omega 3 which work well but I often forget to take them for a while. Interesting your name is freezing, I was feeling like this for months but haven't since L tyrosine. Let me know how you get on, I felt better within days.

Allseeingallknowing · 20/07/2025 16:07

I’d like to try it but I’m afraid of hair loss, I already have thin hair.
