Refused mounjaro and I'm not sure why

I wonder if anyone can shed any light on why I might have been refused mounjaro. I applied via Numan - sent photos. Weight is 93 kg and height 5 feet 5. T2 diabetes, Metformin plus Ramipril and Rosuvastatin. So, on paper, surely I'm the perfect candidate. I'm 57.

Has anyone else had a similar situation? I'm really surprised to have been refused.

Could you email them and ask for feedback?

mustytrusty · 14/07/2025 23:42

The feedback said " there may be an increased risk of side-effects with anti-diabetic treatments when combined with weight loss treatment."
But to be honest I don't actually understand what that means. I'm not sure there's a route to contact them for more info. I can try.

It might be the T2D, some online providers won't prescribe as you are deemed higher risk (bonkers i know as the drug was originally licenced to treat diabetes). You might want to try one of the smaller pharmacies they are often open to taking more risks. Places like Oushk, Pharmulous, Swift doctor, Livewell may help.

Edit cross posted with your update. This is not uncommon sadly.

Try your GP, or a private doctor if you don't or can't see a GP.

moonisblue · 14/07/2025 23:49

Your GP/consultant could prescribe it orally (semaglutide) in place of Metformin?

Taking both could potentially lower your blood glucose too much.

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 14/07/2025 23:50

Because you are on metformin.. for Type 2.
Before l went on mounjaro l spoke to my diabetic nurse .. and she told me to come off metformin first or l won't get mounjaro.. too much over load.

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 14/07/2025 23:52

P.s.. I've completely reversed my diabetes scince l started Mounjaro after 6 months. I've been on it a year now.

Time4changeagain · 14/07/2025 23:53

Type 2 diabetics may have complex health needs and be on other medications. Introducing weight loss injections could potentially interact with existing treatments or affect blood sugar control.
Could your diabetic nurse get it prescribed for you?

Thanks everyone. For some reason I thought that it was ok to take Metformin too. Sounds like a trip to the GP is needed then. Thanks for the input. I'm so disappointed as I've been considering going for meds for months and I finally screwed up my courage!!

I have already spoken to go practice previously who said I wouldn't be prescribed it on the nhs as they are only accepting people with bmi of 41 or above.

Maybe try a GP led pharmacy like Pharmulous or Swift Dr as they can provide a higher level of monitoring and liaise with your diabetes team if they feel necessary.

Another option would be a local independent pharmacy where you would go every month for monitoring and who again could liaise with your gp if needed. Good luck with finding someone to prescribe 🤞

mustytrusty · 15/07/2025 09:06

Thanks for the recommendations of suppliers who might be willing to prescribe. I'll be doing some hunting today! I have also contacted GP this morning to ask if I could (basically) swap from their prescribed Metformin to a privately prescribed GLP1.

Thanks for all the advice!

The exact same thing happened to me! I applied using pharmacy to you instead and got it.

KitsyWitsy · 18/07/2025 14:47

Medexpress gave me it when I was still on metformin. On the list of questions I have to fill out each month it just asks if I use insulin or anything other than metformin. I’m not on it anymore since my diabetes is in remission since after a few months on mj.

KitsyWitsy · 18/07/2025 14:48

Also just to add, I’m on ramipril as well.

Overtheatlantic · 18/07/2025 23:01

I think it’s the ramipril. Miunjaro can lower blood pressure and needs to be closely monitored if you are taking ramipril.
