I have some questions about the injections - I'm worried about messing them up

Hello. I'm thinking about getting Wegovy privately. I can't get it on the NHS as I don't meet the requirements for it. I am overweight (not obese but not far off it) and have been for a long time. I just have some questions about doing the injections. As I've never injected myself with anything before, I am wondering are they easy to do? Do you need someone to show you how to do it? I'm worried about injecting into a muscle or vein accidentally, or giving myself an embolism.

Hi, I use Mounjaro. The pen is super easy to use and the needle is very small. The injection is done directly into the fat on your stomach or leg. (I just use my tummy fat rolls).

There are videos online by doctors which I found really helpful. My pharmacist also walked me through it.

It's honestly not as scary as it seems.

It's a 4mm needle so won't go into any muscle. As for a vein, if you stick to high fat areas and there are less veins in your stomach than tops of thighs. All you will possibly hit are tiny capillaries and have a spot of blood. You can't get an embolism from subcutaneous injections, that's when you go into a vein. I've injected tiny air bubbles many times into fat and I'm still here 9 months but if you stick to the pen and prime then you will rarely get an air bubble, it's only with syringing.
You will receive patient instruction sheets in the box which has step by step instructions on how to use it. Please read it a few times over and have it next to you when injecting.

Also be aware Wegovy or mounjaro, which is the better option from the two, will only be prescribed at an overweight bmi if you also have high BP or another qualifying condition otherwise its obese over 30 bmi only, unless you are an ethnic minority.
There are millions who use weight loss injections now and they wouldn't have passed regulations and rigorous testing if they were unsafe to use.

Thanks. Can I ask, what makes Mounjaro better than Wegovy?

Hi OP. I have been on Wegovy since Ibhas a BMI of 31 just over a year ago. It’s honestly super simple to use. I sometimes literally don’t feel the needle. Otherwise it’s a tiny sting. Takes me about 10 seconds these days. I inject my thigh.

Mounjaro is the newer medication that has 2 active ingredients rather than the one in Wegovy (a glp1 and GIP agonist). It generally gives better results, ie greater weight loss and has fewer side effects than Wegovy but everyone is different and reacts differently.

As said above, you need to have an obese bmi (over 30) or one of 27 and above with a weight related illness or be from a smaller framed ethnic group to be prescribed.

Mounjaro targets 3 GLP receptors trizepertide, wegovy is semaglutide and targets 2. Mounjaro is more effective and showed better weightloss and is licensed for maintenance and long time or lifetime use. Wegovy has a max use of 2 years. Mounjaro has fewer side effects than wegovy. Mounjaro is cheaper too and more available. I started as a prediabetic on bmi 32.4 in October 24 and now I'm bmi 24.8 and that's slower loss than a lot of people due to insulin resistance and prediabetes, lost 3 stones in 9 months from 13st 1lbs to 10st 1lbs. Those who have a higher starting weight lose a lot more on mounjaro.
