Has anyone managed to get covered for cosmetic Mounjaro? i.e. Mounjaro for weight loss prescribed by an online prescriber rather than Diabetes.

I called my insurer and as it’s a choice to take it, they won’t insure for any side effects.

My concern isn’t side effects, it’s the possibility of them using the fact I’m on the drug to get out of paying up e.g. oh you fell and broke your leg…probably got light headed from Mounjaro and fell.

I’m off to America so it is a worry for me. Wondered whether any insurance companies add it and cover it?

Many thanks!

I think you are very prudent to be concerned and to make sure you are fully covered while away.

Cannot suggest a provider though as I haven't been away recently, there have been a couple of threads on this topic recently if you search you might find some suggestions on them, or hopefully someone will be along soon with suggestions.

Mounjaro is prescribed for obesity. They could say “it’s a choice to take it” about all medication.

MissFizzyPop · 06/07/2025 11:01

I have travel insurance with a bank account, I was able to add "obesity" as a medical condition for no extra cost, the mounjaro is prescribed for that condition.

ScrewedByFunding · 06/07/2025 11:01

Well its a choice to take medication for anything surely? It's prescribed for a medical condition not a jolly high!

I already had an annual policy with Allclear including the USA, Canada, Asia and cruise cover. Phoned them yesterday as going to Majorca next week.

Basically they said because it was not prescribed by an NHS doctor my policy was unaffected. I thought that strange but they said taking it via a registered pharmacy for weight loss was not viewed as being as much of a risk as getting in prescribed on the NHS as that means you are either morbidly obese (with the health complications that brings) and/or a “brittle” diabetic. So I suppose it makes sense when u think of it that way.

Thanks. I just want to make sure I’m covered for it.

I’m in a similar boat. Also going to America. I won’t be taking it while I’m away, but knowing my luck I’d end up with my appendix needing taking out and having an extortionate bill, and I always drill into friends and family the importance of insurance, so it would be me who ends up with a bill by Sod’s Law!

I have a travel pack through Barclays/aviva and recently declared some things via the app. It bot looks as though I can’t go in and edit that, and will need to ring up. But I’m worried they’ll say the same as they have to you and cancel my whole policy or link a broken leg to mounjaro to get out of paying.

MyRootinTootinBaby · 06/07/2025 15:36

Just as an update in case it helps anyone else; I phoned Aviva and went through it all with them. I had to declare a condition of obesity. They took my height and weight, and while I’m technically not obsessive now, I was when I started the meds so they put that down as a condition and weren’t interested in the medication.

IsItSnowing · 07/07/2025 08:39

I'm also with Aviva through my bank and they added it for me at no charge. A very nice lady apologised that they have to put it as obesity but I said that's fine as I am. She said they are more geared up for dealing with it now rather than when it was newer.

DorotheaDiamond · 07/07/2025 08:52

Interestingly mine had an option of “weight management” as a condition so I selected that, I think either it asked if I was on drugs or I just had to declare it in comments (can’t remember)…no added cost

Pumpkinforever · 07/07/2025 10:33

It is very wise to declare obesity. I have only started to do so since starting MJ last November. It was only then I realised that I should have been declaring it for years 🙄 and in effect had been giving insurers the opportunity to wriggle out of any claims that could have an obesity link.
