Using a Jab that’s over 30 days old

What happens if you use a does that is post dates?

I had lots of side effects so I dropped to 1.25 twice a week which worked well. But now I have a pen that is due to expire on 9th July- today is 4th

I took 2.5, 2.5, 1.25, 1.25, so I have 2.5 plus golden dose left in the pen.

I want to use it rather than throw it away because I’m on a budget that is tighter than my trousers.

has anyone done it - Google tells me it might mean the drug is less effective or there’s a risk of infection, but I’ve been responding well and am healthy (if fat) so I think it might be ok to risk a bit of sepsis in my quest to be thinner.

I keep mine in the fridge and have no worries about using it. Room temperature then I don't think I would use it.
This is not advice. You have to make your own choice

SilenceInside · 04/07/2025 09:33

Nothing is likely to happen, other than the medication working as usual, with the slight risk of it being less effective and/or a slight increased risk of infection.

If you have been scrupulously hygienic with the pen, and it has been kept in the fridge the whole time, then the risks are as low as they can be. As the PP has said, you need to understand the possible risks and make your own decision on what you're comfortable with. No one should be recommending you or encouraging you to ignore the manufacturer guidelines.

I keep mine in a drawer after 1st use and micro dose, so pen lasts a lot longer than a month and is still full effective. You must be meticulously clean. It’s your own choice at the end of the day.

thesugarbumfairy · 04/07/2025 09:40

nothing happens. but as others have said - your choice. i always use alcohol wipes with mine ( I dose every four days so I pierce it more than normal) and am very careful with hygiene - at my own risk. I don't go over 30 days but i would do having been on it over a year now.

Thanks, all. That’s really useful. The GLP suppliers are, understandably, reluctant to discuss off label use.

It is effective for me and I’m happy with my hygiene standards (I work in health) and it’s been in the fridge so my gut feeling is it will be ok.

I have a 20 year old tub of sudocream that is probably far more of a hazard…

I've had a 5mg pen in the fridge for ages now, didn't use it as I went up a strength.. it runs out in November.. so I've decided to add 2.5 from it to my 10mg to make 12.5, so I can just buy another 10 next time.. I shall be using it for 10 weeks, kept in fridge,

Risk taker, maybe? But I'm happy to do it..

WeAllHaveWings · 04/07/2025 10:42

No-one knows.

I keep in fridge, am very careful with hygiene and use on day 35. I personally consider 5 days over very low risk. I wouldn't use for longer as the risks possibly will increase as time goes on and are unknown.

We know the medication is sensitive to its storage conditions whether that means the risks are it is just less effective or there are risks of infection from bacteria growth as the effectiveness of the preservatives reduces once exposed to air/bacteria or possibly degradation of the compounds to make them harmful - the point is no one really knows.

In the absence of any credible information everyone's decisions for themselves need to be based off gut feeling and how lucky they feel, it should not be based off social media posts, as in the end it is only them that will face the consequences.

Ask yourself this - would you intentionally, regularly, inject your child with a medication you know is classed as high risk, is storage sensitive and is outside its "in use" date? Most wouldn't, why would you take risks and value your own health less?

Plus I wouldn't like to be in A&E saying to the Dr - I used an out of date Mounjaro pen, but someone on tik toc/MN said it was ok to use after 10 weeks and everyone is doing it.......... 🙈

If it's been kept in fridge it is fine providing liquid is clear. If it is going cloudy don't use. I've found it's ok for 2 months. Nurse told me if it's clear it's ok if it's going cloudy don't use it.

Cloudy indicates a problem. Clear doesn't guarantee there is no problem.

A nurse is not qualified, and it is outside the scope of their role, to give that advice unless explicitly guided by a pharmacist or the manufacturer and one that does is being unprofessional and should be reported.

(no pharmacist would direct a nurse to give that advice routinely)
