Weight loss injections with BMI 29?

Wondering if they are something I should consider. I’m 41, 5 ft 7 and my current weight is 13 stone 1-5lbs depending on the time of day. I’ve used ‘normal’ methods of weight loss throughout my adult life and have been between 11 stone something and 13 stone something more times than I can remember. Weight watchers and calorie counting mainly.

I got myself down to 12 stone 1 last December (from 13 stone 6 last June) but lo and behold we’ve had a stressful house and job move and 6 months later it’s all back on again. My eating (and drinking) are often quite compulsive when I’m stressed - I do sometimes wonder if I have undiagnosed ADHD - and while I can have tremendous willpower and focus, I have never managed to crack the weight issue. The last time my BMI was normal was 2020 and then only for a few weeks. I find it very frustrating.

I’ve got a really big presentation at a prestigious conference in November and I can’t bear the thought of being this size when I’m giving it so I need to get back on track. And also I DO NOT want to go through the menopause at an obese weight which I currently feel set to do.

However I’m not yet at BMI 30 so technically not eligible for injections but wondering as I’m so close either if I ‘round up’ for the purposes of a prescription or wait until I put on a few more pounds then could this be the answer I’m looking for??

Or would I be better to get back on the ‘traditional’ weight loss horse again but perhaps spend the money on some counselling or coaching instead to try and make the habits stick this time and address the compulsive behaviour?

Wondering if anyone has been in a similar boat….

I added a stone and 3 inches off height.

I added a stone and 3 inches off height.

This is why pharmacies are tightening up. There is no way you were even close to the prescribing range if you had to add on a stone and lose 3inches.

i suggest you seek help for your eating disorder and don’t abuse medication which is a lifeline for genuine obesity sufferers.

Thanks for your comment. Sorry I probably worded it badly - I’m not expecting a quick fix (the event in November is focusing my mind but I’m not expecting to be at a healthy BMI by then - half a stone off would make me feel much better though). What I’m wondering is more whether this is a good strategy to get out of the diet-regain cycle longer term, and it’s lovely to hear you have had a positive experience!

Sorry - didn’t mean to imply you were planning on using it as a quick fix. I was adding my long term plans for the inevitable - you will regain it all comments.

For me what’s amazing is how the WLI is allowing me to sustain a deficit for longer than I normally would. I’m 12 wks in and two stone down. I’ve managed this myself before. I feel much better about myself, dropped a dress size and even though my BMI is still 26 this is where I’d normally start to falter. I’m confident now that I can reach goal with the WLI. Then I plan to stay on them for a good stretch of time to try and reset my ‘set point’ and work out exactly how much I can eat in maintenance. Then I’ll try the therapy etc and wean off sloooowly in order to give myself the best chance of maintaining. I am lucky that I can afford to use the WLI as a crutch while I work on the root cause of my compulsive / comfort eating. I do feel really hopeful that I might be able to maintain after this despite all the negativity.

@DelCalMun you know it deteriorates once opened even if refrigerated?

DelCalMun · 30/06/2025 22:19

@Feelingggroggy I didn't, thank you for the heads up. I'll look into the shelf life. Hoping I won't need the other 2 doses.....

SilenceInside · 30/06/2025 22:20

@DelCalMun it’s 30 days once you’ve started using a pen. It’s in the paper instruction leaflet that came with it.

DelCalMun · 30/06/2025 22:25

@SilenceInside, thank you, I clearly didn't read it fully. Sounds like it's past its shelf life already. I'll be v cross with myself if I end up having to buy more, though they probably won't let me unless I slide right back to BMI 30. Another stick to keep me going hopefully.

Itscoldouthere · 30/06/2025 22:34

@Trotskykat you know you can move to a pharmacy who supports maintenance with a lower BMI, I’m with Oushk and they prescribe down to BMI 19/20, you just need to show your prescription history.

Have your blood pressure and cholesterol been checked recently? If you're on the cusp of obese, either or both may well be too high or are least borderline.

MeridaBrave · 10/07/2025 11:41

If you have high blood pressure / high cholesterol / PCOS can get at BMI 27 (I can’t see how they check if you have PCOS??). I was right on the cusp. Either change height or stick a 2kg/4kg dumbbell down back of trousers.
