Treatments for digestive side effects

Has anyone found anything that prevents the awful sulphur burps / vomiting / abdominal pain and diarrhoea combo side effects.

I spoke to my provider who said try a fibre supplement. Has this worked for anyone? Any recommendations for a particular one? Anything else?

I am currently back at the lowest dose but am gaining weight and am so depressed about it. Can’t turn my body back into a toxic waste dump with these side effects but really don’t want to go back to where I was weight wise.

I was fine for months and then I wasn’t, even when cutting down the doses. I am not convinced it relates to what I eat although I guess it could be.

Pepto Bismal is the best thing, it’s bright pink and smells of germolene but if you hold your nose when taking it, it tastes ok, slightly pepperminty.
I take it if I get any slight feelings of bubbly tummy, nausea, heartburn, wind and it really helps.
I eat prunes and take inulin powder to keep constipation at bay.

Some peppermint oil capsules from Amazon, helped me with burps and gurgling tummy

ThirdStorm · 23/06/2025 14:50

Peppermint tea and psyllium Husk capsules for me, but mostly making sure my meal plan is lower fat as that seemed to be the cause of my digestive issues.

BerfyTigot · 23/06/2025 14:52

I have taken Buscopan tablets - don't like taking liquid meds

JunoRoma · 23/06/2025 15:37

I had unpleasant gastric side effects in week 17 and 18.

Prevention:
If you know you're prone to this, be wary of foods which take a long time to digest.
Make sure your gut keeps everything moving regularly: drink enough water, eat enough fibre / try psyllium husk.
Get your gut microbiome as healthy as possible: probiotics, plenty of fruit and vegetables.

Treating it once it starts:
Pepto-bismol: you can use it for up to 48h, be warned that it can cause black stool temporarily.

A probiotic and digestive enzymes.

BigFreeze · 23/06/2025 19:44

I would also like to know how to stop the constant diarrhoea? I take a probiotic every day and it’s not helping. I have IBS so used to diarrhoea daily but not to this extent.

Re the nausea and vomiting. You can try an anti emetic from your GP if you think it’s bad enough. They’ll probably try you on Cyclizine

BackToWegovy · 24/06/2025 10:10

Thanks, everyone. I have ordered some probiotics with digestive enzymes and some psyllium husk.

I know I can’t stomach pepto bismol but will keep buscopan in mind and the peppermint if this combo doesn’t help. I think it is about preventing the fermenting food in the stomach which I think is what sets this off rather than treating the symptoms of it.

Any idea of foods that are best avoided or eaten for this? I have seen a bit of a link with fatty foods. I do eat lots of vegetables already.

I find that eating anything sugary or fatty gives me abdominal discomfort or even pain. As well as diarrhoea and nausea.

I once had these side effects 8 days after my injection (had been on holiday which is why there was a bit of a delay). On the way home I decided an airport toblerone was a good idea. So in that case I think it must have been the chocolate or maybe a coincidence because all my other episodes have started 24 to 48 hours after my injection. I think a food diary is probably in order if I try increasing the dose again.

You’re probably right and sounds like it’s linked too your diet. Mine isn’t, I could eat a grape and still run to the loo within minutes 😆 I avoid very fatty foods because of my gallbladder removal anyway. I fear this is my life now!

It varies between individuals, but you can get an idea from searching for dietary advice for people with gastroparesis, who also need to eat easily digestible food.

The following are generally best avoided:
• fried / fatty foods
• very sugary foods
• large amounts of insoluble fibre (roughage)

• fizzy drinks / too much alcohol

Some people on Mounjaro have found that specific vegetables set off the gastric issues (peppers, onions, garlic).

JunoRoma · 24/06/2025 12:42

I don't know what happened to the formatting there, it wasn't intentional.

Goodness - so maybe the fibre supplement is a bad idea. It would turn all that I know about healthy eating upside down. Low fat, no raw vegetables and lots of white bread.

Please get your gut as healthy as possible.

take probiotics regularly. Psyllium capsules are great at keeping you regular. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dry important to drink a lot of water

if you’d like some flavour, chamomile tea, peppermint tea and cinnamon tea are good for the sulfur burps. Don’t drink coffee after only one cup in the morning. Don’t eat after 7pm, 6pm if you can meet that time frame. Will help greatly with being able to sleep and any indigestion feelings.

you must eat enough protein. You need to work out what gives you best protein but less gas. Keep a food diary of what you’re eating and how you react.

be sure to eat foods that feed your gut . I have sorted the sulphur burps with the continuous use of probiotic and psyllium. Because I no longer have that problem, I eat a lot of home made coleslaw that has carrot, red and white cabbage, onion, fresh fill and parsley (loads of parsley) and mint. I’ll add nuts or seeds I have. The dressing in one tbs olive oil or avocado oil, 1 tbs vinegar (apple cider that is cloudy), 1/2 tbs maple syrup or honey, dark & pepper. I’ll sometimes add other veg or apple. This feeds your gut biome. Of course if you r not already addressed the gas, cabbage and onion isn’t going to be good for you.

instead of sauces from tins or jars, make your on tzitki using 0% fage (if is high protein) with cucumber (strained) loads of fresh mint, dill and parsley, lemon juice and garlic. Very tasty, has protein, is not full of junk so much better for you and your gut.

food prep and meal prep will help you greatly.

I was told by my doctor years ago that peppers and onions are the worst thing for you if you have bowel problems. I know personally high fibre foods are terrible for me. I reckon you do trial and error and see what works for you

Soluble fibre is fine in this situation, it will help to keep everything moving.

Insoluble fibre is normally good for gut health, but not if it's going to be sitting in your stomach for the next 24 hours.

An update from me. I have been taking the psyllium husk and probiotics with digestive enzymes. Yesterday I look my second 0.5mg dose. So far so good. It is early days on the 0.5 but I will stick there for a while before maybe braving 1mg again if I continue ok. I have been really careful with food too.

my weight has stabilised too I think.

Thanks for your input.
