Stomach Acid - Omeprazole not working

workingcocker · 14/06/2025 08:03

Been on WLIs for 2 years now. Lost 4 stone.

Never had any of the nausea side effects etc.

However, for the past 6-12 months I have suffered with stomach acid, to the point where it made me feel I had a lump in my throat (aware it’s a big thing for WLIs but it’s not a lump, it’s just the stomach acid). I started a large dose of Omeprazole and it sorted the throat lump feeling and made a huge difference for a while but now seems less effective.

Has anyone had this and can recommend an alternative?

It’s waking me up early and disrupting my sleep.

No throat lump feeling anymore, but just burning etc.

You should really see your GP as long term acid reflux isn't a good thing. I have it (not related to MJ as I had it before) and there are alternative treatments which can help if Omeprazole doesn't work for you.
The burning is horrible. I hope you get a solution soon.

I use Guardium, I think it's the same active ingredient though.

Your GP can try different PPIs such as lansoprazole, esomeprazole. But be aware long term PPI use has some real risks such as magnesium/iron deficiencies, B12 deficiency/nerve damage (especially when older - I have it in my mid 50s due to long term PPI use), calcium malabsorption and bone density issues, you want to be on them for as short a time as possible. GPs lazily give them out like sweeties without telling people the risks or helping to resolve the root causes. If/when you do come off them you need to do it gradually to avoid rebound acid production.

Try using something like Gaviscon Advance (not the double action one the advance one is thicker) before bedtime can create a raft which helps reduce reflux at night.

Avoid eating at least 4 hours before bedtime/eat as early as possible. Avoid trigger foods - acidic, spicy, fatty, caffeine, alcohol, fizzy, sugars.

Elevate the head of your bed (not just pillows your whole bed).

Sleeping on left side helps

Look at option to reduce WLI dose to reduce slowness of gastric emptying/full stomach at bedtime
