Seriously considering mounjaro

Donaldduck22 · 11/06/2025 21:29

In my 30s and have struggled with my weight my entire life. Now have knee pain as a result and back pain that is worsened by my weight. My weight makes me unhappy every day and often for the majority of every day. BMI currently 38. I don't really know anything about mounjaro. Can anyone give me pros and cons? I worry quite a lot about the side effects. Any info would be really helpful please, I'd love a happier future.

The pros are that you will likely lose weight! And, some people find there are fairly rapid improvements in inflammation related conditions, like joint pain.

The cons? Well, it’s a prescription medication that comes with the risk of side effects. Most are minor, manageable and short lived. Serious side effects are rare. And of course need to be weighed against the ongoing risks of being obese. Another downside is that you’d be paying for a private prescription, so financial cost is a consideration.

What side effects are worrying you the most?

SilenceInside · 11/06/2025 21:35

Another pro, I stopped being miserable about my weight all day everyday as I felt in control and positive about the future as soon as I started taking Mounjaro.

A friend of a friend had faecal incontinence so that scared me a bit but is the only person I've heard of having that.
I've got IBS so I worry about the nausea, vomiting, constipation side of things.
Also when you stop it do you just put all the weight back on?
Thank you for your reply, I feel desperately sad about my weight and it's just ruined yet another holiday.

I'm so pleased for you. I'm looking at Lloyds for a prescription, does it matter where I get it from?

best thing I’ve done, I have PCOS and insulin resistance so have to work 10x harder than an average person to lose any weight but 6 weeks in I’m over a stone down! If you are looking around I’d consider looking at monj.co.uk to compare prices etc xx

SilenceInside · 11/06/2025 21:48

I think that faecal incontinence is extremely unusual. It’s not something that anyone on the long running threads here has discussed as a side effect, that I’ve seen. Your friend of a friend has been exceptionally unlucky.

I know that some people with IBS have seen an improvement in their condition on Mounjaro, but it’s very individual of course. You might get nausea, that can be fairly common when you take the first dose and when you go up a dose level. But you can take anti nausea medication if it’s very difficult to manage.

Ive been taking Mounjaro for almost a year and haven’t had any side effects for months and months now. I did have a couple of episodes in the first few months, when going up to 5mg and again at 7.5mg. I’ve recently gone up to 10mg and not had any side effects at all.

I haven’t stopped yet, I’m not at target. Still have about 3 stone or so to go. Worrying about putting all the weight back on won’t stop me from losing the weight in the first place. It will be a nice problem to have when I get there, and is no different to any other weight loss programme. You can also continue to take Mounjaro for maintenance if you choose to.

FurForksSake · 11/06/2025 21:48

I have ibs and have had some periods of diarrhoea just after injecting, but overall less than before. I’ve lost nearly five stone since August.

honestly, best thing I did for myself was to go for it. Use it to make lifestyle changes, learn your calorie deficit, focus on fibre and protein intake and see it as a tool.

Yes there are side effects and it’s not to be taken lightly, but is is so worth it.

Have a look at https://monj.co.uk for a price comparison chart. The medication is the same from wherever you get it. Some places do a subscription model so be aware of what you might be signing up to. Some offer additional support services like coaching if that’s something you want.

There is a treasure trove of info and experience in the many threads in this section but it can seem overwhelming at first. This is a nice friendly but balanced overview from 3 normal people who use it which might help.

They don’t claim to be HCPs and you should definitely read the guidance from the pharmacy if you decide to order and speak to them about any medical questions. But you can get amazing support on here on the monthly threads. There is already a busy June starters one.

I started in April and already feel like a different person. Cannot recommend it enough but we are all different and you need to make an educated decision for you with all the information.

thearchers · 11/06/2025 22:31

Just be aware that you might well need to be on a maintenance dose for life. This is what is ultimately putting me, I don’t want to be on it long term. Each person has to make their own personal decision of course, just something to consider.

Ouvavuuu · 11/06/2025 22:35

The only side effect I’ve had is weight loss and no more acid reflux… hurrah! You could try a low dose? I’ve stayed on the lowest dose and continue to lose weight 6 months in.

BerfyTigot · 11/06/2025 22:44

@pimplebum I'm in thyroxine too and had no problem getting it from Asda

Fatmumslim01 · 11/06/2025 22:46

I'm also on thyroxine and have been prescribed it by Asda and medexpress. I've just had my thyroxine reduced as I've lost weight so need less. Obviously you will need to put all about thyroxine in the assessment with the online pharmacy.

Goingawayistricky · 11/06/2025 22:54

The side effects if you do get them aren’t anything you won’t have had before and work in the same way as any other dodgy tummy - drink floods, stop eating until it passes etc.
Its pretty amazing that it really does change what you want from food.
The weight might go back on but that will be old eating patterns creeping back.

No, being on thyroxine is surprisingly common. Many of us taking Mounjaro are on it. As far as I know, like anywhere that has a high street presence, Lloyds pharmacy are far more expensive than reputable online pharmacies. Several also have discount codes for the first order. I have been getting mine from Med Express since the beginning of April. My husband gets his from them too. We have always found them very easy and efficient. I have a £40 discount code for them. PM me if you’d like it.

I think Farmeci are the cheapest at the moment for 2.5mg, You can check reviews for each pharmacy listed from the links on monj. You can also change supplier each month to get the best price.
Medexpress are far from the cheapest even with a £40 code, They are often recommended because the person giving you the code gets a referral credit. They are also having stock issues at the moment.

It has been life changing for me and the side effects have been very manageable.

I think lots of people do put weight back after they stop and you can titrate down or continue on a maintenance dose if that works for you. I am hoping that I will have got out of some bad habits and learned to eat more healthily while on my journey. Also I didn’t get fat in a couple of years for me it was gradual over many years. Hoping that I won’t get fat again quickly either and if I hit bmi 30 again, I can always restart! I won’t let it get so bad again. i was just under bmi 38 when I started, now bmi 31. I have lost 40lb since the end of october.

That aside I am currently eating a calorie deficit of around 500. Calories so to maintain I should be able to eat those and stay the same weight. This gives a safety net should the food noise/intake increase on stopping.

I have heard that on MN, but honestly neither me or my husband have ever had any issues at all with Med Express, including any stock issues. It’s true that if someone uses your code, you get an account credit, but it’s still an advantage to a new customer to have £40 off their first order. They are not the cheapest, but considerably cheaper than Lloyds, Asda etc and they are reliable which is not the case for all providers.

It’s great you’ve not had any issues and I hope you never do but It’s mentioned on a lot of social media about the problems they are having and the poor customer service.
Whilst I agree they are cheaper than quite a few of the more expensive suppliers they’re certainly nowhere near the cheapest, Which is what @pimplebum asked.
