Correct food with Mounjaro

India4 · 09/06/2025 17:19

I have my starter pen & will inject later, I have to be honest I’m somewhat nervous of this.

May I ask what a typical lunch should consist of? Can I eat potatoes, salads, I’m scared of eating incorrect food & the maybe side effects?.

Thanks in Advance.

I don’t think there is ‘correct’ food. I can eat all the foods I did before I just eat smaller portions and fewer snacks. You will need to be guided by how you feel - if you have side effects etc.

you will shortly be inundated with responses telling you to eat high protein and low carb… I do try to include a protein source with each meal and naturally eat fewer carbs as I get full quickly but I haven’t excluded carbs from my diet. There’s a thread on here where people post their daily meals if you are looking for ideas but I think everyone’s normal will look different.

If it helps my meals today were:

fasted until 11 am

B: full fat Greek yogurt, strawberries, blueberries, 2 tablespoons low sugar muesli

L: cherry tomatoes, sugar snap peas, protein bagel with peanut butter

D: chickpea and potato massaman with rice and a small piece of naan

i might have a few M&Ms once the kids are in bed. I’m down 1.5 stone in 10 wks so not super fast loss but I’m happy with my progress.

Mounjaro slows down your digestive transit, so food hangs around in your system longer than normal. You might want to avoid or minimise foods that you know that you personally find harder to digest. And you might find that your preferences change towards protein and away from processed carbs, as a lot of people seem to.

Thankyou very much, your answer is so helpful.

I eat usual foods, just less of them. Having said that, I really don’t want anything sweet or deep fried any more (a complete personality change!) and just don’t want any snacks. I usually have Greek yoghurt and berries for breakfast, some sort of salad with protein for lunch and then whatever the family are having for dinner, but just a small portion. I drink a lot less alcohol and caffeine and a lot more peppermint tea. Your body will tell you when something you’ve eaten wasn’t a good idea!

Olderbeforemytime · 09/06/2025 18:23

Avoid anything very fatty or spicy and eating before bedtime. I also have a lot less caffine and alcohol.

Focus on making sure you get enough protein and fruit and veg. And calcium. I’m a bit obessed with calcuim.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 09/06/2025 18:28

I took my first dose on Friday. I have had no side effects other than a bit of bloating. I am more tired than normal but I think that is more down to not drinking enough. I haven't had any toilet based side effects so far.

I have made myself eat, so have had a small bowl of cereal with soya milk over the weekend for breakfast, a sandwich at lunch and then a small portion of whatever we have had for tea. I haven't really felt hungry but I am insulin resistant so I have to be careful honest something or I will become very ill very quickly.

cloudjumper · 09/06/2025 18:29

There is no right or wrong food, but as others have said, ensure you get enough protein. And lots of fibre and drinking water - constipation is a well documented side effect (it’s been my main issue on mj).

I’ve been on it since February am 39lbs smaller. I’ve found that white bread and rice give me acid indigestion and eating after about 7pm makes me feel like a snake which has swallowed an elephant, especially in the first few days after I inject. Towards the end of the week things start speeding up and moving a bit more in the bowel area. I tend to give fried foods a swerve due to the calorie count but am ok with jacket or boiled potatoes. I tend to have fruit and yogurt for breakfast (except on Saturday which is bacon cob day), usually salad with either chicken, prawns or tuna and a dressing made from low fat natural yogurt and mint sauce or curry powder for lunch and maybe a pack of wotsits or quavers, then dinner can be pretty much anything, tonight it’s just me and DS so we’ve shared a couple of pizzas from Lidl. Loads of water and peppermint tea and the occasional Diet Coke as a sweet treat.

There really isn’t a ‘right type’ of food but the advice is that if you want to build healthy sustainable habits after the drug, then make friends with protein. You’ll probably find that your tastes for less healthy options change too. For me it’s like the first time I can actually hear what my body wants, not what my food addicted brain wants. So today I’ve had:

Breakfast - Porridge made with skimmed milk and a tablespoon of fresh cream
Lunch: Wasn’t hungry but I ate some ryvitas with tuna mayonaise
Dinner (still wasn’t hungry) but had a breaded fish fillet and some chopped tomatoes and cucumbers with a bit of dressing. I’ve had 3lt of water too and if I’m snacking before bed, I’ll have some cashews or a bit of chocolate.

I genuinely enjoyed all of it and it didn’t feel like ‘diet food’ either.

You want a good mix of all the food groups so make sure you get plenty protein, fat and fibre which increases satiety and helps to prevent muscle loss. You should be mindful of carbs and try to ensure that you are choosing complex carbs and eating them with a protein or fat. This helps to reduce blood sugar spikes which can make you feel hungrier.

as mentioned upthread anything that you sometimes don’t get on with too well is likely to affect you more on Mounjaro due to slowed digestion, I often see people commenting that they’ve had stomach problems following particularly greasy or spicy foods. I get on fine with spicy but things like fried foods don’t sit well.

Typically for lunch I have something I’ve batch cooked in the slow cooker, I stick to a basic mix of 500g meat, onion, lots of mushrooms and then whatever other veg I fancy usually carrots, peppers and tinned tomatoes or stock, then seasoning to make it a casserole or a chilli or a bolognaise and so on. That makes 4 portions, each about 250 cals depending on what meat I used.

BrunchBarBandit · 09/06/2025 20:35

I’m completely addicted to Greek yoghurt (with a drizzle of honey, a few blueberries and a sprinkling of mixed seeds) for breakfast and don’t think about food again until lunchtime! It’s really interesting how my appetite has changed and the things that I crave: I can’t stomach bread in any form; I mostly stick to rice or a couple of plain potatoes for carbs and go heavy on the protein. I crave salads, veg and fruit and went through a phase of having spring greens for lunch every day. I make and eat a lot of dhal.

I got side effects last week (diarrhoea) as DH did a quick tea when we were rushing around with the kids - it was a veggie pastry thing that I had with some baked beans. Not sure if it was the pastry or the beans but I’ll avoid both in future.

Good luck.

No, you can leave it out after first use if you want.

No, it can be stored anywhere cool and dry nowhere where it could be likely to see temperatures of 30 or above. I do keep mine in the fridge but only because it’s convenient to have it there.
