When do you stop?

I’m 32 with a BMI of 27.
I’m very active (I run at least 20 miles per week, usually much more; strength train, and cycle) and know how to eat healthily, calorie count etc.
I just find it intensely difficult.
I have diagnosed ADHD (probably autism - waiting for assessment and have a son with ASC) and I think eating is a form of sensory seeking.
All I think about is the next little dopamine hit from a snack.
I have PCOS and am seriously considering weight loss medication just to get rid of the constant feeling of hunger. I would save far more if I wasn’t constantly snacking than I would on medication.

But when does it end? If I stop taking the medication in 6, 12, 18 months… does it all come back? I I’ll I start wanting to eat all the time all over again? I’m guessing this isn’t going to magically fix everything?

No it doesn’t make permanent changes that persist once you stop taking it. You would have to make lifestyle changes and embed them long term if you wanted to stop taking medication. The other option is to continue taking a maintenance dose as long as your BMI doesn’t fall too low.

And, separate to all of that, I don’t know if you’d qualify for WLI with a BMI of 27 unless PCOS is treated as a weight related health condition? Or your ethnicity means that you qualify?

I doubt you would be prescribed, have you checked?

Yes PCOS qualifies I

@SleepWalkingtoSeville
I dont have pcos but have read people say that MJ has helped enormously with their symptoms (and how pcos has made it so hard to lose weight in the first place). Instead of worrying about what will happen after you've lost weight, maybe reframe things... focus on the benefits of losing the weight first, see what impact this has your symptoms (and other aspects of your life), then plan how/if you want to come off it when you've reached goal. Plenty of us here have found ways to maintain the weight loss, both on and off MJ. Some, like me, have decided to stay on a low dose for the long term, in the same way others are on meds long term for a range of health conditions.

I have PCOS with insulin resistance and it’s a game changer! 1st 2 down in 5 weeks x

I'm also AuDHD and honestly if you're only at 27bmi I'd wait and see how adhd meds affect you. For some they break that binge cycle and give you the space to "pause" rather impulsively react to cravings. Many many people lose weight on adhd meds.

I'm on both but I am morbidly obese and very very large. Both have been lifechanging for me for different reasons but the adhd meds have effected everything about me.

wobblybrain · 07/06/2025 17:08

Ok, as someone who started with a BMI over 50 I can honestly say I would not even consider it based on your OP. You are considering a WLI to stop you wanting to eat, not to lose weight? Or, as usual, have I missed something between the lines re weight loss?

o get that it’s hard but tbh I also find it hard whilst on MJ. Don’t get me wrong I have lost 5 stone and it’s been life changing, but I still get hungry, still have to manage my portions and food choices, still want to binge sometimes.

And no it won't magically fix everything. My advice to anyone since following all the discussion around UPF, especially for those with adhd, is to start cutting out UPFs. This isn't just the obvious "junk food" but most supermarket bread, sauces. Again the research shows UPF messes with out brain in so many ways. It can have a huge impact both on weight gian/loss and adhd.

Are you considering ADHD medication?
