So after loosing 7 stone I decided to put in my sm that I had been taking Mounjaro (it’s just friends I’m not an influencer or anything) some people had been asking dh if I was ok as they were worried I’d lost weight due to health reasons so I thought I’d be honest about how I’d done it.
im very happy, I’ve had people tell me I look great and I’m healthier than I’ve ever been.
Anyway I mentioned I’d lost my arse completely and needed to do so exercise to build it up and one ‘friend’ has been messaging saying you can’t build muscle while on Mounjaro and I’ll have to come off it (no chance as I still have an overweight bmi)
Do people really believe this?!? While loosing weight quickly might make you loose muscle if certainly doesn’t stop you gaining it if you work out

People seemed to have forgotten that an opinion isn’t a fact these days. Ignore them op. I’m also on Mounjaro and have lost 5 stones so far, it’s not always an easy journey but no weight loss one is. I feel so much better physically and mentally as I get slimmer.

So to genuinely build muscle you need to have excess calories, whereas on mounjaro we are in a calorie deficit so whilst your 'friend' isn't wrong as such, it's any calorie deficit not mounjaro specific. We lose muscle whilst dieting but you can preserve it through exercise.
Once at maintenance you can build that booty right back up hehe!
For some reason people will see jabs as cheating or always find a negative but with 7 stones loss i bet you feel bloody great!! That's an amazing loss! Don't worry what others say you should be proud.

Penthrowingsurvivor · 02/06/2025 15:13

who cares.

It's pretty obvious if you are getting toned or not. People can "say" whatever they like, you can take photos and see results by yourself.

Well, this is what has happened to my muscle mass while I’ve been on Mounjaro.

It puzzles me why anyone would announce prescription treatment they are getting for a medical condition on social media, and then to start discussing (albeit indirect) body side effects 🤔 Is it for validation or something else?

You open a discussion to a social media space, even a personal space, especially a topic you know full well opinions on are currently divided, you need to be prepared to either need to educate your audience, respect different opinions, or have a thick (slightly loose) skin.

I think we can live in a bit of a WLI bubble engaging with social media where we get a bit evangelical about them and want to "spread the word". No-one is out there posting updates to family and friends "10 months on high blood pressure meds systolic pressure down 10 points - Go me!", or "10 months on HRT, sex drive is back but no idea what to do with it and if I did too tired anyway!" .............. or at least no-one I know!

I’ve been doing Caroline Girvan’s Iron Series - never done weights before in my life. I’m not sure what these new lumps on my arms are if they’re not muscles - maybe I need to go and see a doctor? Grin

It's possible to build some muscle in a calorie deficit but it is harder. That's why bodybuilders go through cycles of bulking and cutting. People who are new to strength training will see the most improvement as so-called 'beginner's gains' at first because they are coming from a lower starting point.

I'm sorry OP, but if you make a public or semi-public announcement on social media then people are going to feel invited to comment, and justified in doing so.

Oohoohpickme · 02/06/2025 17:56

No question I’ve been gaining muscle in calorie deficit - it depends what you are doing.

Daisypod · 02/06/2025 18:05

I have no problems with people commenting, even negativity but when they spout ‘facts’ that are clearly wrong it’s annoying. Especially when they have no medical or sports training.
oh and my husband has talked about his blood pressure meds on social media 😂 but like I say this is just for friends

That's the problem with the jabs - everyone has an opinion about it whether they're well informed or not!
It's perfectly possible to build muscle when in a calorie deficit if you're overweight. Once you've got little or no fat then it becomes very hard. But for those of us who have a BMI over 30 the body has enough fat to allow muscle gain.
It is always hard for women to build muscle though so it's a slow process. But well worth it as part of a healthy lifestyle going forward.

myplace · 03/06/2025 08:56

Interesting discussion. @1clavdivs surely that’s the percentage changing because body fat is going down? That’s not the same as actual muscle mass increasing. It’s still awesome to see the fat/muscle ratio move in the right direction!

I was told about not gaining muscle in a cal deficit too, by a personal trainer. It’s interesting to see the explanations on here. I could really do with increasing muscle mass. Hmm.

Notabikerchick · 04/06/2025 13:51

I’m gaining visible muscle at a bmi of 26. I’m doing weights 3 times a week and a similar amount of Pilates.
