I didn't expect them to turn me down

I decided that the only way I was ever going to lose weight was to do WLI
I need to lose at least 8 stone to get to a healthy BMI. Saved up enough money to last me a year of injections so I wouldn't feel guilty about spending 'family' money. (I realise that it would take me more than a year to lose 8st).

Asda have turned me down because I'm Diabetic.

I've never read that this is something that prevents a WLI being taken as that is what it is treatment for originally. It never crossed my mind they'd refuse me, or at least not refuse me for being Diabetic - because I don't take mounjouro now but I might do in the future.

My GP surgery won't prescribe it. I've been waiting for a referral to the NHS weight loss group for about 12 months and finally got the first appointment in about a months time. Their letter says that they basically can't/won't prescribe WLI though the NHS scheme and that it's basically not to be discussed at meetings and not to be asked about. . The only way to get the WLI (as I understand it) is to fail at the weight loss without WLI for 3 years. And then I can go on a wait list for approx 5 years before being seen. aaaargh.

I have loads of food noise, I have very little willpower, I am terribly unfit.

What do I do now (apart from knuckle down)?

Do I apply somewhere else and lie?

Snake oil?

Anyone tried hypnotism?

Just a bit sad.

On the plus side I've got a wodge of money I can throw at the problem!. Might just buy a very, very, very large cake.

Can anyone suggest a Plan B?

Erm treatment of diabetes is it's main /original reason for existing.

I might try a personal trainer or something as well as it instead off, although my experience is that they are all a bit super fit and over enthusiastic.
I'll probably re subscribe to gusto/hello fresh to help with meal planning/portion control.

But also makes its use more complicated, and makes you a higher risk for the prescriber than a non-diabetic. For example, if you are taking insulin, or started on insulin while taking mounjaro then you will need close monitoring and I imagine the company are not set up to respond to those difficulties. Whereas, if prescribed insulin and GLP1 by the same prescriber then it’s much easier to interpret and respond to monitoring results.

how well controlled is your T2?

RedDeer · 28/05/2025 19:27

I was refused by Asda for Type 2 as well, and boots as family history of thyroid cancer.

However pharmacy2u and Medexpress ok me for them.

Hallywally · 28/05/2025 20:37

There are lots of other prescribers- try them.

Private Dr consult?

theasdadrsaysno · 29/05/2025 19:02

My diabetes is under control and I've only just tipped over into the 'diabetic' zone. My other medical issues are problematic though!

Anyway, after initially being devastated I'd been turned down I'm now thinking omg, this is it as MedExpress accepted me. Should be with me after the weekend, so I need to up my water intake and get some multi vit ordered.

Thanks everyone for being reasonable with me.

I asked about this before on behalf of a friend who was all psyched up to take it and then told she wasn't eligible due to being type 2 diabetic, seems crazy as it was developed for people with diabetes originally I thought.

Anyway people came on the thread and said they'd been prescribed it with diabetes so it doesn't seem like a blanket rule.

TheSilentSister · 29/05/2025 19:26

I'm with chequp.com am overweight not obese and diagnosed with pre-diabetes and I got it.

I'm prescribed MJ on the NHS. The criteria is having high HBA1C levels AND have tried a sustained period of 2 or more Diabetes medications which have failed to reduce the BS readings.

So if you have T2 Diabetes but it is under good control then you won't get prescribed.

DottyMcDiet · 01/06/2025 21:59

Each supplier has their own rules.
MedExpress declined me, due to specific drug I was on, but 2 other suppliers were happy to supply me.

Koazy · 02/06/2025 08:12

Good luck, I’m with MedExpress and happy with them. Hope it all goes well

Also prescribed for T2 via NHS and I think it’s important that people using MJ who are being treated for T2 are using it under the care of the diabetes team. When I started using MJ I was taking insulin twice a day and full dose of metformin. I was watching my Blood Sugar readings very carefully and within a couple of weeks had to drop the insulin because my levels were going low. Within 6 weeks I was off of the metformin too.

Low sugars are more dangerous on a day to day immediate basis than highs because they can cause you to pass out and become muddled which is dangerous if driving etc so it’s really important not to add medications that can cause them without the right oversight.

Morrisons and Simple Online Pharmacy

theasdadrsaysno · 04/06/2025 08:48

Just to update . I started with MedExpress in Sunday. Currently no side effects. But drinking the volume of water is a struggle.

And to add. In our NHS area WLIs are only prescribed through going through the tier 3 weight loss programme. And the blurb for the tier 3 programme makes it clear that they won't prescribe WLI . So quite who is getting the WLI via the NHS in my area I've no idea.

Oh good I am glad you got somewhere. Both Boots and ASDA rejected me in the early days of Saxenda due to being a diabetic.

I returned back to my online provider (not a high street branded chemist) who served me as both diabetic and potential for remission diabetic - even after having declared hospital admission/unplanned surgery whilst it took a bit longer then usual but I got a prescription authorised. Thankfully.

The nhs is in crisis, I’m buying some of what the district nurses ask me to in treating a wound - please don’t give it headroom who is getting it on prescription, I certainly wish I hadn’t.
