Reaction at injection site?

I have been on mounjaro for just over 3 months, never any issues before. I have kept at the lower dose as it seems to be working for me and I want to loose slow and steady (averaging about 1-2lbs per week). However, last two weeks that I have injected I have got a big red mark at injection site that is so it itchy for days after. I am also finding I am not feeling great- very lethargic, and quite sick.

wondering with the hot weather maybe I should have kept the pen on fridge? Or something else?

has this happened to anyone else? Thanks!

Would seek professional input - call 111.

notenoughhere · 26/05/2025 08:03

Gosh i wouldn’t do anything, perhaps take an anti histamine at most? Definitely wouldn’t be calling 111
for something listed as quite a common side effect when there is absolutely no indication of it being anything more than a simple mild reaction.

I've been on mj since oct and since March I have also been having huge red itchy patches every time after i inject! No idea why, they take weeks to fade as well

HateThese4Leggedbeasts · 26/05/2025 08:10

I get a large (bigger than my hand print ) swollen itchy red patchy for a few days every time since increasing my dose. The pharmacist just gave me an antihistamine.

My mj provider just said 1 in 10 people have this side effect

Time4changeagain · 26/05/2025 08:10

Has your pharmacy sent different needles with the last pen? I have been sent a lot of different brands/lengths over the last 12 months. I find the shorter 4mm ones leave me with a red itchy reaction site but the 5 & 6 mm ones don’t.

raspberrymeringue · 26/05/2025 08:15

I’ve been on MJ for 6 months and had two 2.5mg pens that caused a rash a bit like an insect bite. And randomly this week my 5mg pen did it on the 4th injection. I find a dab of hydrocortisone cream helps this itch. I didn’t feel unwell with it. Nausea and lethargy are well documented side effects for some people though. And weeks of being fine then suddenly getting a side effect seems to be common too.

soveryconfused85 · 26/05/2025 08:25

Thanks, you have reassured me! Will try a wee antihistamine (don’t know why I didn’t think of that myself!)

Apart from antihistamines put an ice pack on the injection site for 10 minutes. If you don’t have an ice pack then a packet of peas would do as well. If you get a reaction next time as well then ice pack the injection site right after injection for the next few ones. Heat can increase the itching so an ice pack after hot shower or bath helps as well.

DarkForces · 26/05/2025 09:30

It's really common. I had it for about 4 months and it seems to have settled now. I take antihistamines and popped on some hydrocortisone. I react similarly to insect bites. It's annoying

morbidcuriosity · 26/05/2025 09:52

Could be a different brand of needle.. some are longer than others..

TourangaLeila · 26/05/2025 09:58

I had this for a while and then it's randomly stopped. Bodies are wierd.

Recently u a also quite tired for a day or two after injection. All normal side effects.

Someone on here mentioned needles are lubricated with different things one of which couild be causing you a small reaction. Worth looking into.

CurlsandCurves · 26/05/2025 10:05

I get this too. Big red splodge at the injection site which gradually fades after a few weeks. I read it’s a reaction to the carrier fluid. I’ve been reacting like this since i moved up to 5mg.

SpunkySquid · 26/05/2025 10:09

As others are saying, it’s very common. I started getting it when I moved up doses.

WitchDancer · 26/05/2025 10:40

I get this too, but only when I upped my dose and the needles changed. I use an antihistamine cream on it for a day or two, which works well.

I did tell my supplier and they weren’t bothered at all

FortyElephants · 26/05/2025 10:41

I get this, it's very common and nothing to worry about

DarkForces · 26/05/2025 10:42

Good point about the needles. I switched suppliers and my the lessening reaction coincides with this. Maybe that's the difference

As a healthcare professional, I beg to differ.

As a healthcare professional can you explain why you think a minor, common and self treatable irritation needs a call to 111?

Bigfatsunandclouds · 26/05/2025 11:32

I started getting this on w4 and only just stopped w8. It goes down after a few days but if it's bothering you take an anti histamine.

Papergirl1968 · 26/05/2025 15:47

I often get a small red itchy area where I’ve injected. I read on another thread it can be prevented by cleaning the site before injecting. I know it says to clean it on the instructions but must admit I never bother.

Histoscientist · 26/05/2025 17:13

It used to happen to me every jab for 3 months, I thought it was a reaction to the alcohol swab (I have sensitive skin) but that didn't make a difference. I tried antihistamines and switching needles brands, still the same reaction. The only thing that worked was leaving it out of the fridge for around 1hr before jabbing. Never happened since then, now 4.5 months on!

BunnyEaster · 29/05/2025 10:33

I'm getting thi too. Can you buy different brands if needles fir the pens? I'm injecting on my tummy below my waist band. I wonder if somewhere else would be better?
