What do you eat and how much?!

Hi,

I was prescribed Mounjaro for t2 diabetes in July and have lost 42lbs. I’m on 5mg dose. My BMI is 31.8, and I’m currently 11st 9.5lbs.

I’ve read a few threads about MJ, and a lot of posters seem to have lost a lot more than me in that time.

I’m confused about how it works for weight loss. Do you lose weight because it suppresses your appetite? If so, does this mean that the people on a higher dose hardly etc anything? What do you eat?!

thanks!!

I think it’s different for lots of people I’ve lost 42lb since January. I started taking it and started losing weight immediately. it was like a magic wand. I tried saxenda but it wasn’t nothing like this.

I eat a normal healthy balanced diet in calorie deficit. I do not track. I do not eat unhealthy snacks. Basically I do everything we know we should do but have never been able to. I don’t think about it. Sometimes I forget to eat but rarely.
My appetite is suppressed. I also think it changes metabolism. I eat small portions and leave food. I eat like a thin non greedy person.

start weight is one factor and also insulin resistance is another.

I think I am a “super responder” and then there are the “plodder”. I’m not sure how many fall into what camp.

anecdotally it seems those with diabetes or pre diabetes or PCOS need higher doses.

im struggling to get my head around it- was I broken? Greedy? Lacking will power? I definitely think I was addicted to food.

Yes, that resonates with me too!
I find I can go all day without eating (busy job that often doesn’t allow me time to stop for lunch) and I can only really manage one meal a day. If I have lunch then I won’t want dinner. So am I losing weight because I’m only having one meal a day? But surely that’s not good for me! However, I don’t want to eat for the sake of it, or risk stopping the weight loss if I eat more!

I have days where I could easily not eat but I do make sure I have three meals, even if they are small. I want to normalise my eating, create healthy habits for when I stop MJ. Also, even though I don’t feel like eating my body does need fuel.

Also on it for T2 diabetes, have lost 67lb since September. Unfortunately my blood sugars only stay in normal range if I cut carbs to just those in non-starchy veg and berries even with MJ so that has pretty much dictated my diet.

i eat about 1400-1600 calories a day, mainly protein, fibre and fat with carbs as low as I can. So far the only ones that allow me to be back in range 2 hrs after eating are a small portion of basmati rice, or a single slice of dark rye bread. Half a jacket potato gave me readings of 21 n/mol 2hrs after eating it.

Im now on 10mg dose, stayed on 5mg for 20 weeks before doing 4 weeks at 7.5, my doctor wont prescribe the .5 doses for more than 4 weeks as they were only tested as titration doses not for long term so I didn't get the opportunity to see if 7.5 would have been sufficient.

My diet typically looks something like this

Breakfast - latte, not a big eater in the morning and never have been
Lunch - slow cooker batch cooked portion of something - Chilli, casserole etc I have a base recipe of 500g meat, onion, carrot, mushrooms (lots), tinned tomatoes and then I’ll add seasoning and other veg depending on what’s in the house. It works out around 250-300 calories a portion.
Dinner - Meat and 2 veg (pork chop with roasted broccoli and cauliflower, chicken thigh chunks stir fried with greenbeans, asparagus and sugarsnap peas.
Snacks - full fat Greek yoghurt with chopped pecans and a drizzle of sugar free syrup, cottage cheese (Longley farms full fat eaten with a spoon straight out of the tub), boiled egg, protein bar.

Thanks. I find deciding what to have so difficult and everyone else in my household eats loads of carbs!

I switch out the carbs but try where possible to have the same main, so if making lasagna, I hold back some if the meat in red sauce and use that to stuff a big portobello mushroom or 2 or a bell pepper, then cook it all at the same time, if making bolognaise DH and DD will have spaghetti I’ll have the bolognaise meat with greenbeans, enchiladas I do a big side of broccoli roasted with garlic and fresh chilli and just have the meat with veg, Sunday roast I skip the yorkies and roast potatoes and have more of the other veg. I like the Birds Eye steam fresh veg packs for convenience, Tesco do a nice fresh green medley mix too, just stick in the microwave for 3 minutes and it’s done so really easy to switch out whatever carb element they are having.

I’m only on W2 so I’m still tracking religiously but I’d love to get to a point where I eat intuitively - only when I’m hungry and stopping when I’m full.

I average about 1100-1200 calories a day and if I was eating like that without MJ, I’d be chewing my arm off! But with MJ, it feels very easy. I prioritise protein and just find that I don’t want all the carbs and crap I was eating just a couple of weeks ago.

Today I’ve had:
Breakfast - 3 scrambled eggs with a teaspoon of butter
Lunch - I was out and busy and I forgot to have any lunch (very weird sensation!) so at 3:30pm, just had an early dinner of breaded haddock, tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach, some smoked salmon and some low fat mayo. It was delicious and enjoyed every bit and now I’m stuffed!

If I’m hungry later, I have a supply of protein shakes and bars in the fridge (the Lidl ones are really good). I’m also intending to drink 3l of water. I have a 2l drink bottle and I have water with no sugar cordial plus a scoop full of collagen powder (which is also good for extra protein).

For a BH weekend, this is unheard of for me. I’d normally be ‘celebrating’ with gin and some kind of creamy pasta dish. I don’t even feel deprived. I just feel like I’m approaching food totally normally. It’s strange (but good!)
