Flooding on Mounjaro

EILM2224 · 24/05/2025 21:50

This is my third month on mountain, I did two months at 2.5mg and have just taken 5mg today.

since starting Mounjaro I have had extremely heavy bleeding including large clots and it has not stopped the entire time.

has anyone else experienced this? If so any tips?

Sorry, no help but I've been on MJ posts and not heard of this. You should definitely get in touch with your supplier or better still, your own Dr.

SpunkySquid · 24/05/2025 22:54

This does not sound right at all. I would stop taking and speak to your doctor.

Arglefraster · 24/05/2025 23:20

I haven't experienced this but MJ slows digestion so if you're taking any oral hormonal contraceptives or HRT or anything else that might have an effect on your hormone levels that might explain it. I would suggest speaking to your provider or GP promptly

I had bad flooding for a while and finally went to the GP this time last year. Investigations showed thickened womb lining, which excess fat cells contribute to according to the consultant. They also did a biopsy of the womb lining to rule anything else out. I was put on the mini pill and it's helped to some degree- over the last year it hasn't been as bad and I'd say I've had normal-ish periods whereas last year I was basically flooding for 3 weeks at a time if not longer. Started MJ mid Feb and just these last few weeks I'm bleeding more than I have been which is really disappointing- I thought losing weight would be helping as this was the advice for long-term cure from the consultant. So not sure if it's a coincidence as it had already been an issue for me or if it's related to MJ. I would definitely speak to your GP.

EILM2224 · 25/05/2025 11:44

I am on the pill that you take all the way through already, I’ve had hysteroscopy which is normal and biopsy which come back clear.
I can only think it’s the mounjaro but with another 9st to lose I’m reluctant to stop the medication.

It's likely that the MJ is reducing your absorption of the pill - you may need a higher dose prescribed to get the same effect. There is prescribing advice recently released on this.

Yes - I am on HRT - have had v 3 heavy periods (not had one for 10 years) - off for a scan on Tues. Already had scans and hysterospcoies pre MJ. MJ slows the absorbtion of progesterone so its not doing its job - the British Menopause Society issued new guidance in April I have just ordered my next dose online and the pharmacy advice is now this:

"Weight loss injections can make oral progesterone like Utrogestan® or Gepretix® less effective. To keep them effective and reduce the risk of womb cancer we recommend an adjustment. What this means for you: From now on, instead of swallowing your Utrogestan® or Gepretix®, insert it into your vagina. The dose stays the same. This is not a licensed use, but it is commonly recommended in clinical practice. How to do this: Insert the Utrogestan® or Gepretix® capsules high into the vagina using a clean finger, ideally while lying down or squatting. Do this once daily at bedtime. You will need to wash your hands before and after use. Other options that you can discuss with your GP include dose changes, the Mirena® coil, or a combined HRT patch."

I will do this now and I am not worried about my scan - but you should see your GP.

Also when I was having these heavy periods my weight did not shift for 3 looooooonnnng weeks. V depressing as I was IF and cal def. But once period was over - I was losing 1lb a day for 5 days .... so good average - but shows how menstruation impacts weight on scales.

Laylasnan · 24/06/2025 15:58

Just wondering how everyone got on? I am 2 years post menopause and having the same problem, seemed to get worse when I moved up to 7.5mg mounjaro . I have a scan booked in for a weeks time . I am on everol conti hrt patch not oral so can’t blame the slow absorption of progesterone ! I’m having a heavy period about every 2 weeks . The gp doesn’t think it’s linked to mounjaro / weight loss but I’ve read so many people having this problem.

Mulletgirl · 24/06/2025 17:09

Thats interesting that you dont have an oral route and are still bleeding. I have double my prog oral dose and no let up in bleeding - which similarly is now fortnightly and heavy.

I had the scan and as my endo was thick and they spotted a 'polyp' had to go for a hysteroscopy and biopsy (awaiting results).

My GP has suggested a coil to replace oral prog assuming its absoption issue - but with your story - I think I will refuse and go back to the standard prog dose now.

The gynae consultant though it was nothing to do with absorption but due to fat loss where most oestrogen is stored so imbalance of hormones and he believes it will settle in time. Although I have dropped similar weight many times post meno on HRT and never had this issue - so think his theory is suspect.

Best of luck with your scan.

It was my 3rd hysteroscopy in 3 years and now they give gas and air which is a huge blessing as before it was purely medieval.

Laylasnan · 24/06/2025 17:43

Thank you for responding. I have also read that theory that fat cells hold onto oestrogen and release it as you loose weight . It does seem that the more weight I loose the worse it gets. I really don’t want to stop using the mounjaro , I’ve lost 44lb and have about the same amount still to loose .

Mulletgirl · 17/07/2025 12:29

How is everyone getting on with post meno bleeding now - has it settled?

I have had my hysteroscopy results back and biopsy is clear but have thickened womb lining.

I am seeing my GP on Fri to discuss and on a list for a coil. I have been taking double prog but I am bleeding heavily every other week now (its got worse) and absolutely exhausted with it that I have just started taking iron supps.

Has anyone sorted this out?

MyWiseBee · 30/07/2025 05:01

I’ve had this since going up to 7.5mg! I have PCOS and in the last couple of days I’ve had Massive palm size clots and heavy bleeding. My GP seems to think there may be correlation to the jabs and heavy bleeding so they are testing me for iron deficiency anaemia. I’m gutted because Ive done so well on these injections and I’m loving the results but I can’t have bleeding like this every month as I can’t even go into work as I’m in the thickest tenna pads you can buy and I’m changing every couple hours which isn’t a life I want to live x

EILM2224 · 30/07/2025 05:40

Since I went up to 5mg it stopped completely. I am now on 7.5mg and have not had any bleeding since. The doctors did give me Tranexamic acid when I was bleeding and this did lighten it. Maybe ask your GP for this to help you.

I've only been on MJ a short while. I was also using gel oestrogen and a generic brand of utrogestan. Since starting on MJ I had one very heavy bleed and then no bleed at all. That followed regular (manageable) bleeding during my prog phase every month for a year. I've stopped my HRT for now, since MJ seems to have cured a lot of the symptoms I had attributed to peri (brain fog, headaches etc). I only want to take my progesterone orally and MJ is definitely messing with it. I'm hoping my joint pain doesn't come back, but so far so good - the stone I've lost in weight may be keeping that at bay.

Oestrogen HRT is usually taken via the skin, with gels, patches or cream. Not digested.
Progesterone can be taken orally, but should not cause the bleeding.

Mulletgirl · 30/07/2025 10:19

Not you are wrong.

My gynae explained that the bleeding is due to lack of progesterone as it is not being absorbed in the gut so that leaves 'unopposed oestrogen' which causes the bleeding. I have been taking double the amount of progesterone orally and waiting for a coil (with progesterone) to be fitted.
