Does anyone know how I can extract Mounjaro from a jammed pen?

I forgot to prime the pen before doing today’s dose and now it’s not jammed completely preventing me from giving myself the dose. I’ve read online that people can extract the medication from the jammed pen. How do I do that? I have nothing here but I can order some (presumably sterile) needles and syringes for delivery by Amazon tomorrow. But I don’t know what size needle, type, syringe etc. Can anyone advise me please? Also, where would I push the needle into? Would it be where you screw the little needle onto normally?

1ml insulin needles.

Push into the red part at the end of the pen.

Don't get needles from amazon as they are not sterile. Try UK Medi or a other medical supplier.

Thanks, Just ordered from UKMedi but even with £15 delivery charge I won’t get it until Wednesday because of the Bank Holiday Weekend. I can’t get the cap back on fully to the Mounjaro pen as, due to it jamming, the pen is now slightly extended. Do people think it will be ok in the fridge without the cap back on properly?

I never prime my pens and never had a problem!
I buy syringes from Amazon for the golden dose!
my syringes come in individual packets , so yes they’re perfectly fine to use!!

How has it jammed? . As I thought my was jammed once and I tried a different needle twice and got it working.. have you tried a new needle top yet??? .

No, I can try that. But I read on the company website that it has to be primed each time to remove air which I frustratingly forgot to do, it’s just turning pen for two clicks and seeing an “extended line” then pushing syringe so making sure there’s no air bubbles. This action returns the pen back to zero ready for the first full dose. So now the pen is just jammed, not allowing me to twist it back to zero but staying extended so the cap cannot be fully replaced. I honestly could kick myself as this is the second time since I first started last September when I’ve had this problem.

New needle? And it's nothing to do with forgetting to prime. Thats only to make sure the needle works.

KumquatHigh · 24/05/2025 19:09

I’ve read on here that this happened to someone and they went to Boots a bought needles and syringes there.

SilenceInside · 24/05/2025 20:08

The pen lid doesn’t go on the part of the pen that extends though, so it will always go back on regardless of whether the pen is wound out or not.

FinallyOnTheUp · 24/05/2025 22:59

Sometimes a jammed pen will work if you just change to a new (supplied) needle. No idea why it happens, but it seems quite common

Oblomov25 · 24/05/2025 23:51

If you take off the needle, the end bit is very soft. If you have a disposable syringe (easy enough to buy very cheaply) you can insert the syringe into the soft end and withdraw any left over mounjaro.

Just happened to me tonight

the needle was faulty and hadn’t pierced through so the pen ‘jammed’

Histoscientist · 25/05/2025 00:25

Are you sure you haven't already taken 4 doses so then it locks and won't allow you to turn further? I only prime once with a new pen and I've never had it jam and I'm on my 7th pen. I always wait until a tiny bubble forms at the needle tip so I know it's working.

notenoughhere · 25/05/2025 00:31

They it with another needle. It’s often the problem.

Mydoghealsmyheart · 25/05/2025 00:39

I was due to take my second of the four doses so I know it’s not that it’s run out. I’m so cross with myself for messing it up. I’ve tried switching to a fresh needle but it’s still stuck firm, it can’t be twisted one way or the other.

Histoscientist · 25/05/2025 09:57

Its very odd to jam and not twist when still doses to take. If it has happened before there may be something that is causing it. I've not had it happen in almost 8 months so can't think of what has caused it.

morbidcuriosity · 25/05/2025 10:33

Honestly try another new needle.. I had 2 fail on me.. if that fails then get some syringes and do it that way..

Catmum100 · 26/05/2025 06:53

I had exactly the same, tried a few spare needles but it was completely jammed. I was only on the second dose, I assumed just a faulty pen. I did what others have suggested and brought insulin needles from an online pharmacy and took the remaining doses out with those and it was fine.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 26/05/2025 07:10

This shouldn’t happen, OP. You should still be able to depress the plunger slightly to expel any air bubbles, with a new needle if necessary. If this is only the second dose then it’s a faulty pen and I would speak to your supplier about a replacement.

TheNinthLock · 26/05/2025 09:17

Which bit is extended? As the lid (cap) goes on the bit where the needle goes - so if the winding mechanism for the plunger is stuck and extended, this should have no impact on the lid going on?

Histoscientist · 26/05/2025 12:58

Is the red rubber seal expanded? This can happen if the plunger was pressed on a needle that was blocked. This may have caused pressure build up which has stopped the plunger from moving down. Extracting it with syringe may help.
