MJ and weightlifting

Hi all,

Been using Mumsnet for words of wisdom for a good while as a non member, Dad of a 3 year old son.

But wanted to sign up to ask, if anyone had had weight loss stall on MJ as soon as they started weight lifting again? I am hoping it’s water retention..

Thanks
Dan

Dan, I’ve been weightlifting for over 10 years. It always shows a stall or gain on the scales the next day. The body retains water whilst the muscles repair. It’s not because your fat loss has stalled.

Hey thanks for the reply and reassurance 👌☺️ I’m two lb up since exactly a week since I started, trained weights in the morning and 12k steps min everyday since and ate super clean. It’s disheartening but I am hoping it will rectify itself and I will be at a loss again soon.

I struggle too. Weights X4 a week and often up afterwards. Started taking creatine a few weeks ago which has helped with muscle development, and I'm lifting heavier etc but I struggle with not seeing losses regularly - I think long term it will even out

Get that tape measure out and track that alongside!

I think that is important for everyone on WLIs but all the more so when building muscle (and creatine is fab but for the first couple of weeks the water retention will throw your scales off, it isn't fat, just water that helps your muscles).

You could also use body comp scales but the accuracy can be off.

I also find it motivating to track my improvements in strength, that way I have 3 things (weight, measurements and what I can lift) and practically every week I have an improvement in at least one of them, even if another one stalls or even shows a small step backwards.

I agree with PP - if your aiming for body recomposition, you'll be better off measuring your progress with other metrics - body measurements and how much you're lifting.

Thanks all, I was quite concerned about how weak I felt as well after 3 years from lifting regularly. But your reassurances has eased my mind and refocused where I should be focusing on. I watched a fantastic video on the Diary of a CEO podcast with a doctor who was quite the advocate of creatine. I do have a Renpho scale but as it was only £40 I am unsure of the accuracy this will provide but as a general measure it should be fine ☺️

I’m hearing lots of good things about creatine, I use Zoe and they are quite down on most supplements, but they are saying good things about creatine, so I am going to try it. You can get some bloat in early stages, so they say to start slowly and build it up.
I’m quite new to weights but feel really good about them, not yet lifting heavy but I’m building up, wish I’d started years ago.

I’m nearly at goal and have recently started taking creatine and adding in extra weight sessions/lifting more and have noticed an increase on the scales.

Whilst it is frustrating, I know how important the resistance training is for my future strength and mobility so am sticking with it. Good luck!

Check out some videos on YouTube, there is a lot of smart people talking about its benefits! I am going to get on it as soon as I reach my target weight. Will also check out Zoe

Hey, how much gain are you seeing? Do your muscles feel fuller? Are you doing capsules or powder form?

Imo you should probably stay off the scales if you're taking creatine.

Tape measures people. Numbers on scales don't matter if you're weight training.

gamerchick · 24/05/2025 19:29

And drink loads of water while on it.
