I have struggled with my weight since my last baby 23 years ago.. prior to that I was a standard size 10 and never really thought about weight.. but last pregnancy at 39 saw me develop an underactive thyroid AND an autoimmune disorder that required an astonishing amount of steroids .. long story short.. I went from 10st to 22 stone in 4 years.. I hated it. I lost my sense of balance , self confidence, health… blood pressure meds , cholesterol meds, knee injections, chronic IBS .. because of the steroids I was extremely lucky to get a gastric sleeve on the NHS . Took me from 22 stone to 16 stone and there I stayed until this miracle drug came along.

I did my research. I looked at the pros and cons . The cons of being obese FAR outweighed the cons and so I began. Financially I thought it would be a terrible struggle but in reality I save money . No more latte and a croissant for breakfast at the station . It’s taught me to be mindful of what I need to eat to be healthy by prioritising protein, good carbs and fibre..

Im now BMI 22 and 9st 5 and size 10 again .. since end of November.. I remain on a small maintenance dose of 5mg and after a I had a chat with my GP yesterday, I am happy to be there for life .

so my question is .. if you are obese with all the associated health risks AND you have the funds to prioritise your health but are not interested.. ( earring in mind these drugs have been around since trials in 1992) why would you not ?

Sticking a needle in myself gives me the willies. I think I could probably lose weight without these drugs, I just need a lorry full of willpower.

The NHS has taken a view. They are prescribed already for some (a very few) on the high tier weight loss management and will be rolled out to others starting this summer and over the next several years. The clinical trials that are ongoing are not safety trials but additional trials to look at different outcomes other than weight loss. Trials will be ongoing for a very long time, as with other medications that are already approved and in use.

Not what I have heard, we shall see. I know those on tier 4 are allowed them.

Can anyone post a photo of what a normal portion of food looks like on WLI please.

Well of course it varies, depending on what you're eating.

I'd say that I'm now fully satisfied with half a chicken breast with gravy, three small roast potatoes and whatever vegetables I've cooked.

Before MJ I'd have eaten all the breast, nine or ten large roast spuds, a mountain of bread sauce, loads of roast parsnips, two Yorkshire puddings and a great many other vegetables. Plus gravy.

Then I'd have had a load of pudding with cream and custard.

And later on, I'd have had several bags of crisps, a packet of biscuits and a few choc ices.

With MJ I am satisfied with my much smaller roast dinner, and I don't stuff myself all evening afterwards.

And if anyone recognises themselves with this description, and is hesitating about WLIs I can only say this:

16 months ago, my BMI was 50.

It's now 31. I've lost 7st 4lb. Only 3st to go!

As for the cost - well, I'm not spending a fortune on biscuits, cakes and other crap anymore...........

Simply ,to me I’m grand as I am

And I bet you’re indeed grand. But, at your age you don’t really want to be getting any older as an overweight person.

Yes true , health is multi faceted though .As I said I don’t want to risk my mental health I’ve come to this as someone who has lived with family with eating disorders and serious life changing mental health disorders and addictions and I’m none of these I’m happy and chubby ,sadly my sibling who had an eating disorder is now at 48 in last stages of alcoholism and drug addiction so I choose chubby and happy for now .

Most people don't have side effects, or if they do, they're minor, and easily treated.

Hair loss isn’t easily treated and is distressing

It would vary so much, @yukonparkthatthere

my portions vary depending on where I am in the weekly injection cycle and stage of taking the meds. Early days, I had virtually no appetite at all. Now, I do, but only when I am actually physically hungry/in need of food.

Portions on Day 1-4 are probably child size. 5-7 are adult with a reasonably constrained appetite sized. I don’t feel hungry therefore don’t eat at all until 12-1pm at all now so am also intermittent fasting ‘by accident’.

I also have much less interest in alcohol.

In will say, it’s been really easy for me. Side effects have been minor/manageable, I have a job where I can manage my schedule to account for dose increase effects, etc.

If I had some of the bad effects others have had, I would not be as positive about the experience.

@GrammarTeacher totally agree - the evangelical aspect is a bit concerning. I’ve posted myself a fair bit about this. I did MJ for 6 weeks before deciding I couldn’t hack the heartburn and waves of nausea 3 days a week ( I realise some don’t get this) and I realised for me I wasn’t really the right target for it - I have good willpower , I have very good eating habits, I’m not a snacker - my weight crept on due to actually liking food and wine and cooking and simply making too big portions at night - my H is the same. Having come off it but strict cal control of 1200 and adding in 2 dance classes a week I am losing at exactly the same rate as I was on MJ - but can at least now eat spicy food again- just smaller portions and no heartburn- I’ve added in a berberin GLp1 sherbal supplement too and that helps me feel fuller quicker as well. It’s a really individual thing, I can see it works brilliantly for some which is great , but it’s not a magic wand and not even necessary for others depending on their habits , consistency and right mind space though is essential. It really depends on why you got a bit chunky in the first place as to whether other ways might be equally beneficial , easier to sustain long term and lighter on the bank balance too .

What’s the supplement you’re taking Crikey?

Crikeyalmighty · 24/05/2025 09:45

@ChocolateGanache I take one called sensilab GLP1 - 2 tablets half an hour before my 1st meal of day - £39 for a month- it’s worked ok for me as I’m still losing ok and sticking to same principles of low carb, high protein, no snacking . Berberin based - I guess it’s more old fashioned appetite suppressants with a milder blood glucose effect than MJ -

Losing weight without preserving muscle 🙄 not specifically by using Mounjaro obviously, but let's not let that get in the way of a good scaremongering!

How about the issues it causes with eyesight? Or are we supposed to ignore all the known terrible side effects.

Yes they may not be effects for everyone but they are effects nonetheless.

SilenceInside · 26/05/2025 17:00

@Spirallingdownwardswhat issues with eyesight are you referring to? In general, no, people don’t ignore the side effects of medication they have prescribed to them. I’m well aware of what the actual side effects are, the relative risk and the risk in comparison to the benefits of losing weight and no longer being obese or overweight.

There is no evidence that Mounjaro causes problems with eyesight

lunaswand · 27/05/2025 11:06

Why are some people who are on Mounjaro being so pushy about people not taking it? It's personal choice

Quite. We can make different choices.

WeAllHaveWings · 27/05/2025 11:26

@lunaswand No one should be pushing any medication on anyone. That said, this thread is on the WLI board so replies are naturally going to reflect the experiences of people who are using WLI and who may be enthusiastic about the positive changes it has brought to their lives. They may also be more informed about the WLI and be able to respond to and perhaps alleviate any concerns, or provide helpful insights so anyone's personal choice is based on facts. That isn't pushing.

The OP repeatedly refused to accept other people’s reasons. Despite saying they were ‘genuinely asking’.
There are many, many reasons why people don’t.

There is so much more to life than weight. Completely with you. Obviously being very overweight has its risks but something is going to kill us all and I’d rather live more than be obsessed with weight loss (that’s how I get, I can’t think of anything else when I’m in that zone. And I’d have to stay in that zone forever otherwise would definitely put back on).

Im not someone who eats nine roast potatoes, I feel like my food intake is good, I’m just massive 🤷‍♀️

Got to agree the OP's tone doesn't encourage open discussion or show much respect for differing individual choices.

I am worried about long term side effects as this is a very new drug…. Ive just started though but everyday it is a conflict in my head? Am i doing the right thing? Am i too vain (for wanting to be slimmer)?
im definitely trying to stay on the lower dose possible. Then once i teach my GW, im thinking of doing 6months on (winter) six months off (summer)

The GLP-1s as a class have been licensed in the UK & Europe since 2006 (US since 2005). It is only the license for weight loss that is more recent.
