Mounjaro but scared of needles

Hi all,

Would like to start to take the above, however i have a phobia of needles. Can i just ask how easy they are to inject, is it like an epi-pen? thanks in advance as i am clueless, I have a BMI of 33 so all has been approved.

I’m a former needle phobe, and I still find things like vaccines and blood tests to be very difficult. I have been using Mounjaro for 45 weeks now, and honestly the Mounjaro Kwikpen is nothing like a proper needle, and I think much shorter than an EpiPen. The needles are only 4mm long and very very fine. The whole thing doesn’t look anything like a syringe, it looks like a sharpie pen. I genuinely cannot feel it when I do the injection, not any sting or pain at all.

Im not keen on needles at all, but I can assure you that the needle is very small (4mm) and you cannot feel it at all 😊 x

WeeklyJab · 19/05/2025 14:59

The needles are absolutely tiny, almost a hair-like thickness. There is absolutely no pain or anything when using them. I'm sure you'll be fine with them.

Google and you will find videos of people doing their injection which might help?

Ooh I can answer on this too. I’m on week two of Mounjaro now and am terrible around needles.

I’ve got to be honest when looking at the needle first time I got a bit panicky and lightheaded. But, like people say it’s incredibly thin and much smaller than most needles.

I got DH to do the first one as I couldn’t. I had to lie down as I was too nervous to stand. It was absolutely fine.

For the second week DH wasn’t around and I had to do it myself. It was fine though I stuffed up taking it out and gave myself a small bruise. But I coped.

The way I approached it was to sort all the pen out first and not think about the fact I had to inject it myself.

Then when it was all done I just flipped to “injection” mode and didn’t hover just stabbed quickly. After that I was a bit squeamish but it was handleable. I think if I’d have hovered for ages I would have chickened out. The cost of a loss dose probably helped as well.

My husband administered the first 3 with me lying on the bed with a pillow on my head. Ever since the 4th, I've done them myself. They never hurt going on, occasionally hurts a little when I push the plunger in but it's over so quickly.

I'm a person who fainted when a midwife told me how to administer the blood thinner injections after a c-section. She didn't even show me the needle!

threeeggsontoast · 19/05/2025 15:27

I’m not needle phobic but I was a bit concerned at injecting myself. But in reality it was the easiest thing ever and didn’t feel anything. It’s a very thin, teeny needle and when I popped it into my stomach, I looked 3 times to make sure it was actually in. Didn’t feel anything.

PinkArt · 19/05/2025 15:58

@Choirgirl699 I cried at the nice man who was trying to show me the 'easy' anticoagulant injections when I had blood clots. That was the point he realised it wasn't happening and I'd need to come into the hospital for them!
@savysaver23 I'm not needle phobic but I'm very squeamish, which in turn means I've never been able to look at vaccine jabs, bloods being taken etc. I was very excited when Ozempic started to get press but didn't think I'd be able to cope with the injections. Then This Morning had a section on them and the needle was so tiny and the pen so pen looking that I thought I could just about cope. Now I don't even think twice about it. I promise it's not remotely scary. If it would help, there are a lot of YouTube etc videos showing the process. I found them reassuring to watch first so I went into the first jab knowing exactly what needed to happen.

SusanSometimes · 19/05/2025 16:10

I don't even feel the injections, they are totally painless.

The only time I had a little wobble was when I extracted the fifth dose via a syringe with a much longer, but still very fine, needle that I then had to inject myself with. I didn't much like that, even though I didn't feel it. The tiny needle that comes with the pen doesn't freak me out at all.

Hit a plateau - Plato was an ancient Greek pliosopher who taught Aristotle.

Although I'm, sure his mum wanted to "hit a Plato quite often" as philosophers are bloody annoying to argue with!
I've been laughing to myself at the idea of Mrs PlatosMum (Perictione, I think?) lobbing bathroom scales at young Plato when she's not losing weight and he starts a 'dialogue' about the nature of reality rather than sympathise and bring her a nice cold drink.
My son went through a philosophy phase and bloody hell it was annoying.

Mounraine · 19/05/2025 16:22

I'm not keen on injections but I'm definitely not phobic. I have to be honest I don't feel great injecting myself. The needle is short and incredibly thin, but piercing the skin is counterintuitive to me, and you have to press the plunger very slowly.

Weepixie · 19/05/2025 16:34

I’ve found since being on Mounjaro that my fear of injections/cannulas has disappeared and I’m now perfectly ok with having them.

RebelliousHoping · 20/05/2025 13:03

As someone who has now experienced blood thinners, the needles are so small for these pens OP.

you might want to get pre-injection/alcohol swab wipes just give the end of the pen a dab each time before applying new needle each time.

I found it helpful to watch the videos before starting as many times as I needed to get my confidence up.

If you are a newbie, don’t worry about any bonus dose drawing with those bigger diabetic thin needles. ((know people will shoot me down but you risk extra infection with this process))

I don't use the dregs, I just don't feel that I have the experience with injections to do this.

notanothernamechangemother · 20/05/2025 16:36

The first few jabs are almost painfree, but I find using the bonus dose via an insulin needle more uncomfortable, but not painful. If you are happy to not use the bonus then it should be fine. Good luck on your weight loss journey. Try not to compare to anyone else, that way madness lies!

savysaver23 · 30/05/2025 18:22

Why don’t you get a tube of Emla and use that for the first few times, until you have built confidence.

AmythestBangle · 30/05/2025 19:18

Don't think of it as a needle, it is so small it doesn't even look like it would qualify as one! I have been on MJ for 5 months and have not felt the needle once.
