If you’re on Mounjaro, what do you eat?

I plan to start next week (when I return from holiday) but have read that most people eat ‘clean’ where possible. This sounds good to me…I genuinely enjoy eating that way it’s just that I struggle to stick to it long term. I tend to eat really well during the week and usually lose a couple of pounds but then I undo it all at the weekend by eating takeaway or drinking wine. I’m hoping I can create some great new healthy habits and learn to stop falling into unhealthy eating at weekends. I have a couple of questions and wonder if anyone can help?

  1. I plan to order the pen to arrive the day we get home from hols. It’s likely I’ll have been eating all sorts while on holiday so is it ok to take the injection the day I get back or is it best to eat well with lots of protein etc for a day or so first?
  2. What does a typical day look like for you food-wise? I plan to stock up on foods like chicken, salmon, veggies etc. I’m hoping the drug will rid me of the constant thoughts of what I’m going to eat as ‘treat food’ at the weekends! And from there, teach my brain to eat well consistently.

very very little. I stocked up with lots of super healthy food for the first few weeks and ate next to nothing of it. I couldn’t stomach it. I now only fancy very very few things and have no appetite for some of my old favourites!

IsThisLifeNow · 12/05/2025 07:52

My go to meal is stir-fry veg and chicken with either curry powder or sauce. No rice

I do eat a lot of the same things, but smaller portions, or with only veg on the side. I still eat carbs, but just prioritise the protein and veg parts

tryingtobesogood · 12/05/2025 07:53

I eat really well, all week. I have little desire for processed food, like lots of fresh vegetables, salads, grilled meat etc. I don’t fancy alcohol much, have maybe a glass or two a week rather than a bottle or two. I have not had crisps for 9 weeks!!

I do have carbs, but generally only about 1/4 of my meal. I try to follow the balanced plate - 1/4 protein, 1/4 carbs and 1/2 veggies on my plate.

NorthernGirlie · 12/05/2025 07:57

I'm not hungry on a morning so usually just a coffee. This is my day today (4 months in but still on 5mg pen)

Coffee
Hard boiled egg at break time
Loads of herbal tea / water

Box of salad and a big handful of cooked chicken from home with a little extra light mayo.
Herbal tea

Fresh salmon, a couple of Jersey Royals and a big salad

I might make some protein 'fluff' (handful of ice, handful of frozen strawberries, half a scoop of vanilla protein powder and a little milk in the blender - tremendous!) for a snack while I'm lazing about tonight.

I don't weigh and measure but probably should. I've not found a salad dressing I love (used to have lashings of mayo) so I'm just having it as it is but would love to find one!

StartingApril2025 · 12/05/2025 08:12

Since starting a few weeks ago Iv had zero desire for chocolate, crisps, takeaways etc. however have eaten some snacks like snacks jacks or fibre bars but that’s mostly been boredom at work, everything tastes “ too sweet” if that makes sense, have had one or two glasses of Coke Zero whereas before it was a glass a day!
yesterday I ate . I still have carbs but not loads

  • Protein yoghurt and half a pancake my kids made
  • wrap with chicken, cucumber and spicy mayo
  • we had a bbq- so had a burger, some bacon, no bun with plain salad and a spoon of pesto pasta.
  • snack- a whip bar

interestingly late last night was my very first dodgy tummy toilet moment and I do think it was the fact their bacon was fatty maybe or maybe too many carbs yesterday. Definitely something I ate yesterday didn’t help!
id say take the shot a day or two after you’ve resumed normal eating- don’t have to wait weeks, I didn’t alter too much before I started, in fact had a ( small) Indian takeaway the night before and I was fine!

iv had minimal side effects to date!

tryingtobesogood · 12/05/2025 08:13

@NorthernGirlie have you tried olive oil and balsamic glaze? It’s the only dressing I like now.

No - does it not feel greasy?

Lundier · 12/05/2025 08:15

Here's what I'm buying and eating:

A rotisserie chicken (all my meat for the week atm)
Olives
Feta cheese
Cherry tomatoes
Bircher type porridge
Chia seeds
Plain greek yoghurt
Mixed seeds
Apples
Peanut butter
Prunes
Coffee
Tea
Kombucha
Collagen powder
Green smoothies

That's basically it. I'm eating a bowl of porridge with soaked chia seeds, collagen, and prunes most days to stay regular. Then I'm eating a small plate of chicken, tomatoes, cheese, olives for lunch and dinner. For a snack or pudding it's sliced apple and peanut butter, or yoghurt.

I'm eating other food because I am socialising as normal, so I'm eating out with friends, going to barbeques, etc. But this is my baseline for any given meal at home. I bought a bunch of other stuff but I just didn't eat it so I had to throw it away. Oh I have also been eating some veg and lentil soups.

DarkForces · 12/05/2025 08:24

@NorthernGirlie I quite like a French dressing or pizza express house low fat one. Green goddess is lush but too expensive and hard to find and a real faff to make!

TheChosenTwo · 12/05/2025 08:29

I eat a salad at lunch and then a proper dinner - whatever is being cooked that night.
My salad at lunch is usually chicken and veg, as much raw veg as possible but sometimes it’s roasted, just depends on what I fancy and make. And how much I can be arsed! It’s easier in some ways when I wfh as I can do myself some eggs instead, scrambled with smoked salmon and some spinach on the side or something else hot and nutritious but on my office days I either have to prep in advance or go to M&S or Pret and get a salad there.

Isobel201 · 12/05/2025 08:39

Porridge or eggs or a mcdonald's breakfast (I manage the sandwich but I don't eat the hash brown until lunchtime)

Lunch is either a microwavable meal (I buy Tesco's ready meals as they're good nutritional wise) or a cucumber salad with feta cheese and some french dressing. I'll also snack on cooked chicken sometimes.

Snacks - I have popcorn bags from the Popcorn Shed, usually one a day. These have replaced crisps as there's not many calories in them.

Tea is either a microwavable meal again if not at lunch, or sometimes just a little more chicken and salad.

I still enjoy takeaways - KFC is my favourite, I have one of those at least once a month, and I like the mcdonalds breakfasts. I still like to have a coffee in the morning with a little sugar, but its helped with my sugar cravings on other things, and I've lost just under half a stone so far last week at doctors weigh in, but I do my own weekly weigh ins and I've lost more weight since. I don't eat bread, and haven't had pizza, which I'm not missing really.

tryingtobesogood · 12/05/2025 08:44

NorthernGirlie · 12/05/2025 08:14

No - does it not feel greasy?

Not really, the balsamic cuts through the oil, and as you are doing it yourself you can control how much you use.

BethDuttonYeHaw · 12/05/2025 08:47

If I eat breakfast it’s an egg or a yogurt
if I eat lunch it’s a salad or a togurt
dinner is protein and green veg

Mounjaroversary · 12/05/2025 08:49

It's not good to not be eating @MathsMagpie maybe you need to come down a dose, not eating is where health problems start ( I've been on MJ over a year so I totally get the feeling and always found going down a few clicks helps).

I eat good, home cooked meals where I can, I don't cut anything out, eat full fat etc and try to stick to as unprocessed as possible. But I still have a takeaway at the weekend and my Sunday dinner, my portions just aren't as big as before.

I do intermittent fasting so tend to skip brekkie, for lunch I'll have a sandwich, or salad, baked potatoes, scrambled eggs on toast with some veg etc, sometimes I'll have leftovers from the night before.

For dinner it's spaghetti Bolognese, sausage mash and veg, chicken curry etc, again I don't cut any food group out but I really focus on lots of protein and veg.

I have an apple every day for fibre, and rarely snack, except for maybe a small piece of chocolate or a biscuit in the evening with a cuppa.
I drink only water or tea/coffee (and sometimes milk in an iced latte), and I have massively cut down alcohol, literally only a few drinks every few months.

Mounjaroversary · 12/05/2025 08:51

I've lost nearly 5 stone, going from 16 stone to a healthy (for my height) 11 stone which im maintaining and have done for a few months. I take 2.5 mg of MJ every two weeks now and plan to come off it all together this month.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 12/05/2025 08:51

During the day when I am usually WFH, I will eat 2 slices of toast, with copious amounts of black tea - I tend to prefer flavoured.

Dinner is usually something sensible/normal - spag bol, something with mash/home made chips/rice and so on.

Generally no snacks. At the weekends it depends how my suppression/nausea is doing (its usually worse early in the week as I jab on a Monday) but generally speaking its a late breakfast and dinner. I dont really eat clean, just normal, everyday food but less of it.

Xiaoxiong · 12/05/2025 08:57

I try and make sure I eat normal healthy food, three meals a day, almost all home-cooked but prioritise fibre, protein and a variety of veg. As my appetite is not as big as it used to be, I really don't want to fill up on other stuff that means I won't be able to get enough fibre or protein into me. Once you've had a nasty bout of constipation you will never slip on fibre or water intake again...

I don't like the phrase "eat clean" but I have certainly noticed that if I eat something that is very oily, rich or fatty I know about it. I think it's because your digestion slows down so you have all that oily fatty stuff sitting in your bowels for longer and it's not pleasant. And then because you're not ravenous and thinking about food all the time, it's a lot easier to slow down and make a healthy food choice or cook from scratch and not just grab "something" which is usually not as healthy (or even worse, order a takeaway).

Idioticwoman · 12/05/2025 09:03

I can’t stomach takeaways or alcohol at all and when I have had anything mildly not clean (chips from fish and chips and pizza) I’ve spent 24 hours throwing up/on the loo so it’s very off putting even if I think I fancy the food.

my standard day is
Fast until lunchtime
Breakfast on a work day is grated apple, oats, greek yoghurt, cinnamon, ground flaxseed, and peanut butter.
Weekends I might have pea pancakes with egg and cottage cheese or smashed peas/avo on sourdough.

To keep regular I have chia and almond milk with some berries.
Dinners

  • tofu or egg with miso soup and some veg like spinach, kale, red peppers
  • roast veg with tofu or soft boiled egg egg
  • Scrambled egg/spinach with some crackers
Sometimes have a banana oat peanut butter with fresh ginger and unsweetened cocoa smoothie as feels like a treat.

occasional bit of dark chocolate and sourdough crackers if I’m craving crunch

Thanks everyone, some great ideas here. Yes I too hate the phrase ‘eat clean’ but I couldn’t think how else to word it. I guess I mean something like the Mediterranean diet/way of life, good protein, good veg and some healthy fats. I feel following this consistently will hopefully set me up for success.

Does anyone take multi vits/supplements too?

No vitamins really, I have actimel yoghurt drinks to keep my gut biome healthy as if I don't have one of those, it starts going bad like I'm on antibiotics. If you have more veg, then you'll get enough vitamins.

Woodywig · 12/05/2025 11:25

Breakfast might be:

Greek yoghurt, fruit, seeds / nuts
or
or boiled egg, Mellon slices & cottage cheese
And always a small whole milk cappuccino.

then water & herbal tea till lunch - which would be:

protein (usually left over from the night before) with a nice fresh salad. If no left overs I’d have boiled egg, ham, or sometimes those higgidy savoury egg muffins or vegan muffins with my salad.

then water and herbal tea, (perhaps x1 normal or tea or instant coffee) until supper which might be:

tofu or chicken stir fry - small portion of rice
/ noodles
small risotto with a large side of salad
or
cooked ham with asparagus, crudités, and home made salad cream

followed by strawberries or fruit - and spoon of Greek yoghurt.

I don’t eat bread anyway as I find it bloating - I’m still eating carbs but trying to have less - and trying to up the protein. But largely trying to eat normal home cooked meals which I can enjoy with the rest of my family.

MJ (2.5) deffo not curbed my appetite so far - I’m hungry by the time I sit down to each meal. But it does seem to help me feel full sooner - and helps me cut out empty calories from unhealthy snacking (biscuits / chocolate bars / desserts etc…. Which is my Achilles heel!)

Woodywig · 12/05/2025 11:30

@Idioticwoman I'm fully pinching your banana, peanut, cacao smoothie recipe that sounds yum 😋

It’s so good! I just use plain unsweetened cocoa rather than the more expensive cacao, it’s like a chocolate milkshake

here’s a calorie breakdown of it chatGPT did for me

If you’re on Mounjaro, what do you eat?
Yellowsubmarine55 · 12/05/2025 12:45

What I eat depends on what day of the week it is. Day 2 and 3 after jab are my worst for appetite and feeling very full.

Brekkie is always a slice of wholemeal toast and one shredded wheat and milk or yoghurt a sprinkle of granola with berries.

Always have a few prunes for regularity.

Lunch could be a sandwich thin ( protein one from Lidl) with egg, ham, salmon or chicken and salad.

Snacks are only almonds, a banana or a pear.

Dinner is fish, turkey meatballs, chicken, steak or an omelette with lots of veg and a few carbs. No pudding.
