Hair loss help

Morning Jabbers … I need some advice re some help for my insane hair loss!!

I started late January, I’m currently still on 5mg and I’m down 3 stone. Next month I am upping to 7.5 as I still have at least 2-3 stone left to loose but the hair loss is now starting to worry me.

It’s masses every day for the last few weeks and it feels noticeably thinner and I’m noticing my scalp more at the temples area…

any advice, beyond the obvious of stopping, for slow it/prevent it?

Are you eating healthy? It’s normally down to not getting sufficient vitamins if you’re loosing weight fast.

fedup1212 · 11/05/2025 07:51

I think it’s inevitable with weight loss unfortunately. You could try serums that help prevent hair fall, I use Nioxin and currently a L’Oréal growth one that is meant to be a dupe for the kerastase one. They both have amanexil as their main ingredient.

some people will say to take biotin but unless you actually have a deficiency (most people do not) you’d be better off trying something like viviscal vitamins…

wash your hair more, not less. I used to avoid washing due to thinking less hair would fall out but in actual case it can actually make hair fall worse not having a regularly cleansed scalp.

if you’re looking to promote new growth I’d also try Minoxidil. It is a topical liquid, quite a commitment but I do think it’s worth it. Toxic to animals though so something to be mindful of. I am slowly getting baby hairs sprouting through after losing hair from weight loss and iron deficiency.

CountingSleepySheep · 11/05/2025 07:52

I would suggest checking your macros and trying to up your protein intake, I have heard this helps with preventing hair loss. Make sure you are eating enough, at least tdee minus 500 to lose one pound per week. Get plenty of water and maybe take a multivitamin with iron supplement every day.

Mysticmaiden · 11/05/2025 08:40

It's linked to low calories, if you are eating less than your deficit and BMR then your body doesn't have enough calories and this energy to maintain all bodily processes so it stops using energy for hair which is a non essential process.

I've lost quite a lot of hair too and my deficit is 1200 and BMR is 1350 but I rarely eat up to it due to suppression and a higher dose 12.5mg and now a smaller stomach after 7 months of eating less. My friend who has stayed on lower doses in a similar time eats a lot more including mainly carbs, has lost a lot less weight and doesn't track food has had no extra hair loss compared to before mounjaro.

My hairdresser told me to brush my hair more not less at least twice a day and try to reduce knots. To only tie up my hair when absolutely necessary i.e. just for the gym not for the whole of a gym day. To use a strengthening shampoo and conditioner once a week (eg Olaplex) and just a normal gentle one the rest of the week as the strengthening ones if over used make your hair v dry which cases breakage counterintuitively.
I had around three months of increased hair loss which I found distressing at the time. Started around month four of mounjaro weight loss.
My hair is now growing back with wild abandon - it’s a bit unmanageable currently but am seeing progress and expect in a few months I’ll have forgotten all about it.
I’m still on Mounjaro slowly titrating down, 11months in. I finished losing weight at the end of last year and I’ve maintained a 3.5 stone loss since then. I’m delighted to be a healthy weight and size.

Super healthy. Zero processed foods - mainly fish and veg

I've been taking biotin and collagen as I know that I have a propensity to lose hair if I am eating fewer calories. Only just started the collagen. Started WLI in August and lost over 5 stone. So far my hair and nails are doing fine and looking healthy.

ThirdStorm · 11/05/2025 12:47

As with others the only thing that’s helped (a lot) is biotin and ancient and brave collagen in my morning coffee. Lots of new regrowth and I’m shedding much much less. But possibly time, I lost 5 stone by December. Since then I’ve been maintaining. Lost 5 stone in 6 months.

Oksurething · 11/05/2025 13:00

Aside from it being the loss in calories, it could be TE, induced from the medication, 6 months to a year for recovery

StressedEric · 11/05/2025 13:09

It’s due to the drastic weight loss . It’ll get worse for a few months then start to come back it’s got a specific name I think - TE but can’t remember exactly . Supplements etc won’t work on it

Isn't olaplex linked to hair loss?

AmateurNoun · 11/05/2025 13:11

3 stone since late January? Isn't that almost a stone a month/3-4lb per week?

I understand the desire to lose quickly when very overweight but you are already losing at what appears to be a drastic and unhealthy rate - I really wouldn't be considering a higher dose in those circumstances.

I appreciate your concern but you know nothing about me, my start weight , goal weight or when since January I lost all that - please refrain from making such flying statements without more information

It's not really a flying statement to say that 3lb+ a week appears to be a drastic and unhealthy rate and not something I would pursue 🤷‍♀️

I genuinely hope you are under close medical supervision if you are pursuing such a high deficit.

You’ve done it again 🤣

while I had an large initial loss, I loose 1-2lbs a week…

try to stop making assumptions- it really isn’t helpful.

I am not making any assumptions. If you read my posts you'll see lots of words like "isn't that", "appears to be" and "if you are".

In any event, 1-2lbs is a pretty fast rate and your hair is falling out at an insane rate so I'm still taken aback by the desire to increase the dose in such circumstances to be honest. It's not something I would do unless I had specific medical advice to lose the weight more quickly.

And there doesn't seem to be any advice that anyone can offer other than than slowing down or going with it and buying a wig if you want one. There's debate as to whether it's caused by the drug or the rapid weight loss but if you don't want to slow down or reduce your dose then it's surely going to be a problem either way.

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 11/05/2025 20:04

It’s called telogen effluvium and it will grow back but because hair growth is cyclical it takes a while. It’s the weight loss, not the Mounjaro itself. Supplements containing biotin and iron help, as does zinc.
