Tell me more about the golden dose

AlicesMum2025 · 10/05/2025 12:39

I'm new to MN and MJ. I keep seeing people talking about the golden dose but I don't know how it works.

I have a 2.5mg pen and have been taking the full dose each week. I have one more full dose left in the pen.

If I want to get the golden dose what needles do I need to order? Where to get them from? How much is the golden dose? Do I dose it all or only some of it? Is there a golden dose in all pens or only 2.5mg?

Sorry if these are silly questions but I feel like the only person that doesn't know about it. Maybe this past could help some other newbies too.

Thank you

@goingtokickthisweight so sorry, only just seen this! I think people use these with a needle of their choice. Longer for extracting and then a 4mm for injecting.

These are the little triangle needles that come with the pen. Each pen has a set amount of clicks. As I'm doing 1.25mg (30 clicks), this means I will get 8 'allowed' doses out of a pen before it locks- so I needed extra needles for that.

I also have these needles from UKMedi. They are 8mm rather than the 4mm that comes with the pen. These are for the bonus dose, as the pen will lock after the allowed doses. Some people say you can burst the pen open with a hard twist but I prefer to use these needles and know exactly how much I'm getting out.

Ive had 4 x 2.5mg mounjaro, and have a 5mg to start next week. I'd like to take the last dose as 3.75mg. Am I right in thinking I should extract 0.9ml with a syringe? Just double checking. Tia

perimenopoppet · 02/08/2025 11:19

You will be lucky to get 0.9ml extra, 0.7-0.8 is more usual. Just extract as much as you can then calculate what you got eg 0.75/0.6*2.5=3.125 mg dose.

Do you use the same needle to extract the 0.6ml and inject yourself?

I don’t. I use these with the smallest yellow injecting needles https://ukmedi.co.uk/products/10-20-week-injection-cycle-pack-ukmedi-ukm-cyclepack-ukmedi-co-uk?variant=53484958450043 . It’s easier to draw up the liquid with the larger drawing needle, and because it’s longer I find it easier to handle. But then you have the hassle of changing needles (they just push on and off though), so whichever you prefer works fine.

Here’s a question!

Does anyone know, is it that the pen mechanism locks after 4 goes or is it controlled by the level of the liquid?

If it’s the mechanism, it shouldn’t matter when you extract the extra dose, so in theory you could use it halfway through the pen. And then just click as normal to the end.

Thoughts??

It's the pen mechanism. When you extract the 5th dose you will see the rubber plunger move down, the rod which pushes it stays in the same place. So if you extracted a dose after say the second, then did the third as normal, nothing would come out. The rod would just catch up with the rubber plunger, if that makes sense.

This method is often used in a medical environment when the liquid is very viscous. Drawing out through a fine needle is very difficult, imagine sucking thick treacle through a straw. So often a wide gauge needle is used to draw up, then the needle changed to a fine gauge to inject.
Some people have found it difficult to extract the fifth dose and have suggested that a vacuum is the problem, so inject air into the pen first. This really isn't the issue and is not good practice, don't do it. Just pull back firmly and slowly and it will come - and you will see the rubber plunger slowly move down the pen. It's difficult because the needle is so narrow. Firm and patient does it!
