Does anyone get their mounjaro from the NHS?

All the people I know on mounjaro pay for it.
May I ask if anyone here currently has an nhs prescription? If so which nhs trust are you treated by and what was the criteria you had to meet?

I do. I’m diabetic with liver disease amongst other things. I qualified for mounjaro because my other diabetic meds weren’t sufficiently controlling the diabetes.

I’ve been on it for 7 months. My Hba1c has halved and is now in the non diabetic range (but obviously that’s on medication) at 34. My latest liver function tests came back normal! I’ve lost 4.5 stone.

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 01/05/2025 06:57

@KolaKoalaKan that’s great! It really is a fabulous breakthrough isn’t it?
Can I ask which area you are in please?
Trying to workout the “postcode lottery”affect on a availability.

I’m in the south east.

I get it through my GP but have to have a monthly phone call review with the diabetic nurse - it’s not on repeat. TBH that’s quite stressful as she’s an ‘interesting’ character and I seem to have to put up with 10 minutes of fat shaming and patronising comments and this constant threat that the Mounjaro will be stopped if I don’t do well enough or if I do too well (it’s daft that I am worried about having such good Hba1c results as I am convinced she’s going to stop prescribing and I’ll just go back to where I was before!). She likes her power! I find it so frustrating as I’ve done far more research on the clinical trials and research than she has but I just have to play this sort of game!

have you got yours prescribed through the GP?

raspberrymeringue · 01/05/2025 07:08

My SIL does but she had uncontrolled type 2 diabetes and they’d exhausted every treatment including most types of insulin. It’s been a game changer for her diabetes with the additional benefit of weight loss. My local surgery has signs up about weight loss medication, so I think they must have had many enquiries, basically stating SIL’s situation is the only time when it might be prescribed. We are in Kent.

That is awful. I am a retired nurse. Nurses should not behave like that!
I buy my own mounjaro. I'm not diabetic but do have a range of medical conditions which are impacted by weight.
I am wondering if I might eventually be able to get it prescribed but my area doesn't seem to give it to anybody at all what I have heard.
I am in Hampshire.

My gp practice has signs saying don't bother asking about weight loss injections.

As an HCP working in weight management and diabetes this is disgraceful. Speak to the practice manager. This should not be tolerated

gingercat02 · 01/05/2025 08:06

To answer the question. Our ICB are offering it for WM in very limited amounts.
BMI over 50, with 4 other co-morbidities from the following: T2 diabetes, Hypertension, Dyslipidaemia, Obstructive sleep apnoea, Cardiovascular disease.
For diabetes if you meet the NICE criteria you can have it.

changedForThis99 · 01/05/2025 08:21

My dh has a bmi of just over 30, with high cholesterol (genetic) and fatty liver disease. Is there any chance he would qualify for nhs? I'm not sure we can afford it

yikesanotherbooboo · 01/05/2025 08:21

There isn’t a postcode lottery , it is available for. Diarticsin certainly circumstances. It is not available currently for weight loss without diabetes.

I keep considering this but I’m scared to! I don’t know if it’s that I’m ‘too sensitive’. I don’t want to have my prescription stopped. She really doesn’t understand obesity as a disease and very much sees it as a moral failing - but I’m sure she would deny this. So many comments about how people need to try harder and we all have to limit the chocolate we eat. Because obviously I haven’t tried that 🙄 She once said, when I was really struggling with sickness and nausea, and asked for an anti-emetic for the day of the week when it was bad “no, it’s good you feel sick, you’re meant to, it’s what stops you eating” - which is not how MJ works at all and left me feeling like I deserve to feel sick for being fat. Sickness is a side effect not the mechanism of the drug. I saw my GP about something else the next day and she just prescribed it no issues. But I have to go through this nurse for the monthly MJ prescription. She’s made comments about people take it just for the “beach body” and has absolutely no understanding that someone who is obese with a whole catalogue of health issues related to it as well as an eating disorder is probably not the one to be commenting to in that way. But I’ve just got to the stage where I do the phone call, answering as briefly as possible, and then just listen to her monthly lecture so I can get the script!

MooBaggage · 01/05/2025 08:43

I'm not diabetic but have PCOS and obstructive sleep apnoea, as well as a couple of other autoimmune disorders.

BMI was 43 when I started MJ (via private prescription). I asked recently re: getting an NHS prescription and was told our geographic area doesn't give NHS WLI prescriptions to anyone...

Very frustrating as I've lost 3 stone so far, BMI now down to 37 and feel the best I've felt in years - I'm hoping to be rid of my CPAP within a year and be a lot less of a burden to the NHS!

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 01/05/2025 13:50

I buy mine privately but I was chatting to the practice nurse and she said they prescribe for diabetes. She was very excited that I was on it for weight loss!! I’m in Surrey

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 01/05/2025 13:53

@changedForThis99 sadly not at the moment. Everything I have read is 40+ and multiple comorbidities. I will say though that, for many of us, it seems to start paying for itself as the cut in food/booze/eating out etc compensates.

Hearditonapodcast · 01/05/2025 21:15

I was diagnosed with T2D in March and immediately given Metformin. My BMI is 42. At a recent appointment with my respiratory specialist team (I have severe eosinophilic asthma), they suggested I ask my GP if I'm a suitable candidate for Mounjaro. I had a telephone appointment with the diabetes nurse and she said yes. I did my first jab today.

Octaviathethird · 02/05/2025 00:53

I'm on it. T2 diabetic, insulin dependent. Prescribed by my endocrinologist. Starting BMI was 50.3, BMI now 40.6. Hypertension. Was on 60 units of novorapid, 44 units of levemir a day, actually discontinued my insulin back in January but my numbers have crept up slightly so reintroduced levemir last week but only 4 units a day. Somerset.

EmmaJane2025 · 02/05/2025 01:00

yes I get it from NHS for weight loss but had to attend a clinic prior and meet certain parameters. Not diabetic. Don’t think it’s available in every trust area

I am looking to start mounjaro. When I see prices for it online , it's coming up the cheaper version. Can anyone help?

SilenceInside · 11/09/2025 12:41

@Cathymc2 do you mean that the online sites are suggesting Wegovy instead of Mounjaro? That's because Wegovy is cheaper than Mounjaro since September, when the prices for Mounjaro, particularly the higher doses, have gone up by a large percentage. You should still be able to select Mounjaro as your chosen treatment, and continue on to see what the prices are for that.

You can also look at price comparison sites like https://monj.co.uk which are usually up to date with current prices.
