I'm thinking of trying mountjaro, and would like some advice.

I've put on weight lately, and I wasn't slim to start with. BMI around 28, with high BP. I'm also on a medication that is known to increase appetite. I'm finding it impossible to diet in ways I used to. I'm approaching 50.

Mounjaro is available privately in my country with my BMI plus hypertension. Would cost 289e or 359e per depending on dosage, plus 20e per month appointment fee.

Should I do it? Why yes or why no?

Yes. I have gone (I am very tall) from 16st to 11st over a long period (now 17 months) and I am back doing exercise. My dodgy knee is better. I look great, my asthma has improved and I am sleeping better. I now weigh what I did on my wedding day 30 years ago!!

Give it ago and if it’s not working for you then stop.

If you need to be talked into it then no.

This was me last year. I ummed and ahhed for a bit and then decided that having dieted all my adult life nothing would ever change, so I bit the bullet and bought it. One of the best decisions that I have ever made. My only regret is not buying it sooner. 6 stone 10lb down. BMI from 39ish to 24

Lots of amazing health benefits for me, I expect to be on it long term as was initially morbidly obese and now a few pounds off being "only" overweight.

It sounds expensive where you are, if you consider it you need to factor in its affordability for you. You might respond on lower dose or you might not and need to go up doses before seeing any effect, there is no way to tell. You might be able to maintain your target weight after without it or your might regain and need to stay on it longer term.

Hope the costs for this medication come down in time when there is more competition in the market.

I don't need to be talked into it. I've just read about side effects and I want to know if the food outweighs the bad for someone who isn't obese.

I'd be a lot happier and healthier at 2.5 stone lighter, I know that at least.

How much is it in the UK on private prescription?

I have had no real side effects. 2 bouts of the runs, both potentially caused by something else (work in a school / holiday in Egypt). Give it a go. You just stop if you don’t like it.

SilenceInside · 30/04/2025 21:01

Costs in the UK are around £100 for the 2.5mg dose, and then moving up to £150 to £200 ish for the higher doses. There are dozens of suppliers so you can easily change supplier to take advantage of new customer discounts.

Clinically, the benefits outweigh the risks for someone who has a BMI of 27 or higher with a weight related health issue, so that’s the category you fit into.
