I’ve watched a few YouTube videos on this, it seems a waste to throw out the remaining liquid in the pen. I tried one method last month where you force the pen round to 1 again but nothing came out. Has anyone tried the diabetic syringes on Amazon to extract the liquid? I’m a bit of a wimp with needles and they all look pretty big.

It's really easy. Put the needle through the red bit, pull the plunger back a few times until you reach 6 and a bit, prime the syringe by tapping it and pushing the plunger up until there are no air bubbles and use it like the regular needles. You don't have to push it all the way in.

Please don’t buy syringes from Amazon. They are not sold as suitable for human use and there is no guarantee that they are sterile.

I have used these for 10 ‘bonus’ doses and they are fine. Slightly longer than the needles on the pen but still within the guidelines for subcutaneous injections. I actually prefer them to the clunky mechanism of the pen!!

Incognitoburrito88 · 27/04/2025 17:37

Yes it’s very easy. I did pretty much the same as the poster above although I ordered my syringes from UKMEDI as I read on here the Amazon ones aren’t medical grade. Really not sure it matters that much but I prefer not to give Amazon my money if I can avoid it!!

WeAllHaveWings · 27/04/2025 17:42

You can buy separate luer lock syringes and needles (in 4mm or 6mm) on UK Medi if you are like me and illogically terrified of an extra 2mm!!! 🤣

The needles also come in different gauges. The higher the gauge the finer the needle which might be more comfortable but also more prone to potentially bending. Look at the tab on your pen needle and pick one that is the same gauge and length.

Can someone link to a supplier for 4mm needles? I don't seem to be able to find them anywhere including at UK Medi.

Thanks so much for your replies, I’ll avoid Amazon and source some others!

You could try a luer slip reduced dead space syringe with the same needles if that is an issue

WeAllHaveWings · 27/04/2025 23:17

The links are in the edited history of previous post. I hate posting on the MN app!!! So clunky

IsItSnowing · 28/04/2025 08:53

I did this for the first time last week. I've always been a bit nervous of getting it wrong but in the end decided it was too much money to waste.
It was fine. With the 8mm needle you can just not push it all the way in or inject at an angle. I was a bit worried about that too but I usually use a 6mm one and it didn't seem much different. So, I will definitely be doing this going forward.

Excuse my ignorance, is a 4mm needle long enough to extract the liquid from the pen and then also use it to inject? Or do you need a 6mm to extract and then if you're too squeamish to use a needle that long you can buy 4mm as well to do the actual injection? (hope my question makes sense!)

I use 6mm 31G as it is the same size and gauge as my pen needle. I haven't tried 4mm to extract so cannot say with 100% confidence it would be long enough.

You can use one needle to extract, then swap and use another to inject. I do that as, being a needle wimp, it gets me past the thoughts of a needle potentially being slightly blunted piercing the seal.

ShakeNvacStevens · 29/04/2025 09:26

@WeAllHaveWings thank you, I will give it a go!

Can I ask where you buy the 6mm needles?
