Maintaining at overweight

I've reached 11 stone 9 and stayed put for 2 months. I have been on 15mg since January. My start weight was 14 5, my heaviest ever weight is 15 5. My 'set weight' pre pregnancy was 10.5 stone so always at the top end of BMI 25.

I could lose more weight of course but I would have to make a really big effort to cut calories and I would be hungry. Eating to maintain my current weight on 15mg is easy, but not effortless - I still have to think about my choices and eat a bit less than my inclination would like. I think for happiness and mental wellbeing I am going to accept that this is my weight for now and focus on maintaining it. I can afford to stay on Mj long term.

I am a bit hopeful that a new GLP1 will be released soon and I can try switching to that to see if I respond more to it. But if not, I am happy enough being overweight and not obese. Anyone else experiencing similar?

@myladyjane I would think any decent supplier would support whatever goal you wish to reach tbh (unless ridiculously unhealthy of course!!)

I am currently 13st 5lbs (BMI 28) and need to get to 11st 13lbs to break through to a healthy BMI and not sure when to stop (5ft 8.5in tall)

I have lost in excess of 100lbs already, and being in my mid 50s and post menopause ChatGPT tells me I probably have somewhere between 5-15lbs of excess skin and probably in the higher end of that range due to my losses and age.

Being older I’m not sure if I should not aim too low, keep a little bit of padding….I am thinking if I can get from my current comfortable size 16 jeans to a comfortable 14 jean I may stop there.

Personally I would keep losing weight until my BMI was under 25 if I were in your position.

It’s not about looks but just purely from a health perspective; you are at less risk of weight related issues if you have a healthy weight, as opposed to being overweight. That was my primary driver to losing weight anyway.

I don’t think someone with a BMI of 24.5 would look that different to someone with a BMI of 26.5, so it’s not about being gaunt. In OP’s example it would only take losing 5lbs (10.5 stone to 10 stone) to be considered a healthy weight, that kind of difference isn’t discernible by eye.

That could even be trimming down things like visceral fat.

I am very muscular too as I actively train, I monitor my body composition using proper equipment and my muscle mass is 76%, body fat 20%. I am considered lean. Having high muscle mass, doesn’t mean your BMI has to be above 25. I think some people here might be overestimating how much muscle they actually have.

Well done for getting down to a weight you are comfortable and healthy at. For those of us over 50, you actually reduce all-cause mortality by being at the upper end of a healthy BMI or very slight overweight compared to being down at BMI 20/21. Gives the body more reserves to fight illness is I think the theory. I haven’t decided what my goal weight is yet, but if it ends up being around 25 I’ll be very happy there. Would be nice to be able to wear skinny clothes, but not enough to want to seriously deprive myself!

I'm wondering the same thing OP.

The other thing is as we get older is lower weights can be associated with osteoporosis. I would rather be fit and in the overweight category than worried about that.

I am BMI 28 now down from BMI 40 and have just joined a gym and going to try weaning off the 3 pens I have left and see how that goes.

Fatmumslim01 · 24/07/2025 19:34

I started at a BMI of basically 40 (39.8) and it's now 34. I thought about maintaining at a BMI of around 31 but not that's getting quite close I don't think that's low enough
However I also can't imagine being a healthy weight of BMI 25. I'd have to be under 9 stone for that to happen (I'm very short!) so may maintain somewhere between 25-30 BMI

Hello again!
I've lost even more weight since last posting. I genuinely haven't tried, but I have started tracking and increasing protein which has resulted in being more full and eating under my TDEE slightly every day without trying!
I am starting to feel a bit weird about the weight loss. I look great, I have muscle, but I don't recognise myself? I've been obese for 17 years since I got pregnant. I'm now starting to look like my pre baby self (plus a hell of lot of wrinkles and stuff 😆) but I'm sort of feeling like I don't deserve to look like her again? Or I'm not comfortable looking like her...I dunno, it's complicated stuff. I am uncomfortable with people noticing and complimenting me now, when I was totally over the moon about it a stone ago. I am now at BMI 26.8 and have 8 pounds to go to get to 25 which is extremely doable.

Maybe it will just take time adjusting FortyElephants?

I would try thinking of how you feel as well as how you look. it's much nicer and easier getting around for example.
