Protein powder

Is anyone using any good vanilla protein powder? Most of them seem really high in calories (which feels counter productive) or come in huge bags. Wondering if I’m missing something?

The huge bags are necessary because you’re probably looking at a minimum 25-30g powder per portion, so a bag might only last 3-4 weeks.

i’ve tried a few different ones but it’s hard to avoid added sweeteners. Currently using the organic protein company vanilla powder which I’m not keen on taste wise but is definitely one of the ‘cleanest’ powders I’ve come across. Cut with a couple if espressos and ice cubes it’s not too bad. Costs an arm and a leg though!

Are you using the powder to supplement strength training?

PhD whey protein has good flavours and comes in smaller bags

You don't use protein to lose weight you use it to put on weight for bulking out when weight training instead of trying to eat a lot to take in more calories.

You can absolutely use protein powders as part of your diet if you want to lose weight. It’s a good way of getting extra protein into your day.

Protein works has some really good protein powders, the diet meal replacement extreme is a good one, has high protein and fibre content and can get smaller bags. Absolutely worth having protein powders, to help get that protein intake up which will help to maintain muscle mass.

I disagree with this. I’ve got lots of ‘diet’ recipes that require protein powder and as a veggie it’s a good way of getting additional protein into my diet. Unfortunately I can’t stand the taste so I have to get protein from whole food sources.

Not so much strength training at this point although planning to start. More to include protein in a shake if I should have problems eating enough. I’m only on 2.5 dose at the moment so hopefully still consuming enough protein in meals but concerned about when I go up a dose.

Thanks, that’s what I’m trying to do. I walk and swim regularly and am planning on doing some strength training but I’m in my 50s with joint problems so may be slightly limited. I want to include enough protein if I’m struggling to eat much though. Thank you.

OP have you tried it? I buy two unflavoured powders (egg white and collagen) because I couldn’t bear the smell or taste of the other ones I tried.
I prefer to spread it around and add it to food throughout the day and unflavoured powder allows that flexibility. And of course you can use it in a vanilla shake if you like.
I know this isn’t exactly what you asked 🙃 All the other powders I bought ended up in the bin but I find these palatable and I’m not hungry all day.

Arglefraster · 22/04/2025 18:22

I use bulk - they have different sizes BUT I don't like non nutritive sweeteners so I use the unflavoured one.

I haven’t tried anything yet so grateful for any recommendations. Thanks

I use protein works vegan protein, favourites are the vanilla, biscoff, and bueno flavours. Cookies & cream and chocolate silk are good too. I've just ordered the blueberry cheesecake flavour so haven't tried that one yet. The only flavour I didn't like and wouldn't order again was the millionaires shortbread.

I like myprotein for best tasting flavours and varieties. They have better discounts and offers on their website than amazon
