The future of mounjaro?

I know none of us have a crystal ball, but I'd love to know what developments you think there might be in the future in terms of how/ when people take it.

Could there be a pill for a maintenance dose? Maybe a longer lasting injection?
Any way of it supporting a healthier lifestyle indefinitely

(Asking hopefully as it's been so life-changing for me!)

Awww. It's lovely how many people are worried about me losing weight thanks to Mounjaro. Far more so than when my health was at far more risk due to obesity. People worry about whether my pharmacist is qualified to prescribe, if I'm going to put all that weight back on and being a guinea pig on the expensive death jabs. Thoughts and prayers welcome

Couldn’t agree more 😄

I can see it all going wrong if I’m honest. I’m already seeing people who have finished the course and reached their goal weight, now putting weight back on and “wanting to go again”. This is because whilst they may be eating better on M they are still not exercising maybe? Basically a quick fix is never the answer, you have to put in the work and this injection stops you having to do that. I can see people on and off this for life, that can’t be a good thing?

Assume you have no ACTUAL experience? It’s not a quick fix and it still needs “work”. God forbid us fatties could just lose weight without a bit of effort eh? 🙄

FFS the ignorance is next level 🤬

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/04/2025 14:48

A slow release implant would be useful - as it is for other long term medications - or perhaps something more like the equipment used for T1 where a dosage can be delivered constantly dependent upon constant electronic monitoring.

I don’t think the side effects are worse than those of the contraceptive pill in either frequency or severity, but that has become easily available. It would have been so earlier, except for the reluctance to allow women so much control over their own fertility. Where it isn’t available in some countries, the concern isn’t our health, but our autonomy.

Exactly!!! And I think like with anything it's up to the individual (ideally in consultation with their medical professional prescriber, whether that is a qualified pharmacist or a GP or specialist consultant) to make that call.

For me, Mirtazipine has caused significant weight gain but I made the decision as an intelligent adult that that side effect was outweighed by the benefit of no constant suicide ideation and improved sleep. I also tried Sertraline previously and with that, decided that the negative side effects of severe anxiety and worsened insomnia were not outweighed by the positives.

With MJ, I have had some minor gastric issues (mostly constipation, sorry for TMI!) and some feelings of extreme cold, but feel that the multitude of benefits are worth it. As I am not an imbecile or a child (despite apparently being incapable of making the 'right choices' and 'just saying no' regarding food 🙄) I feel that is my choice, not that of some random on the internet with their faux concern about me!

Sorry for the rant, some of these posts just really piss me off haha

MissBPotter · 07/04/2025 16:50

I think it will become normal to have it in a more ‘maintenance’ phase ie low doses perhaps every other week or a month on month off. That’s what I’m actually hoping to do. I’m aware that some providers are helping with this.

Prescription only medication cannot be "prescribed" by a pharmacist. A doctor has to sign the prescription at some point.

It can. A non medical prescriber is a health care professional (pharmacist, nurse, podiatrist, physio etc) who has had additional training to be able to prescribe.

Absolutely - it doesnt turn you into a fat burning furnace - you still have to maintain a calorie deficit over the long term to lose any weight and to keep it off - which means healthy eating and/or more exercise.

You still have to say no to treats, you have to actively plan to eat less.

No one is having their cake and eating it.

I’m puzzled by so many people who know other people who were on WLI, got to target, then regained weight.

I’ve been on Mounjaro for almost 8 months now and haven’t yet met anyone else on any kind of WLI in real life let alone people who were on it and have put the weight back on.

There are some awful bloody fantasists out there.

EveryDayisFriday · 08/04/2025 20:15

I saw an interview with a WL doctor that said pills are likely to be commonplace in the future or even an annual injection. I can't fathom how an annual injection would work on the body but I'm sure those clever scientists will figure it out.

I don’t understand the problem with online pharmacists. I’ve been getting everything from prescription migraine medication to birth control from them for years because my GP surgery is useless. Didn’t see anyone worrying about it all then.

Edited

And don't forget pharmacists have been able to prescribe for UTIs for years, too. If not properly treated a UTI can get serious very quickly and can develop into a nasty kidney infection which is no joke ( I was hospitalised with a severe kidney infection in my early 20s).

Yet, oddly no one gives a shit about pharmacists potentially mismanaging the treatment for UTIs? Funny that?

I have recently lost 3 stones on MJ which is just under 25% of my overall body weight. All those unpleasant side effects of being overweight have disappeared. My hideous water retention has gone. My cholesterol is back to normal. The constant palpitations have stopped. I look younger. I feel younger. I move younger. It's absolutely fantastic.

I fully intend staying on it long term, content in the knowledge that it is protecting my heart and bones, and also against dementia.

My (now much healthier) heart goes out to all those who don't take it.

The future re. Mounjaro, it looks promising to me ….

Absolutely, especially as the vast majority of people don't tell anyone they're using them if you take a straw poll on these boards, yet so many claim to know loads who are getting it illegally, having horrendous side effects or piling the weight back on. They also know that they didn't change their diet and the jabs just magically disappeared the excess weight. I'm really open about using them, but also that it's hard and boring to get my bmi down to a healthy level and that once I'm there I'm going to titrate down until I find a level that allows me to maintain my weight

Arraminta · 09/04/2025 10:20

Very recently a fantasist posted on here that she could always spot someone on WLI because 'they have track marks everywhere.'

Yes, of course you can dear. Except that the injection is only sub-dermal and the needle is only 4mm. Hilarious.

Although, always disheartening to see how woefully thick members of the public are.

I’m hoping more research and evidence comes to light about the additional benefits that could go on to help many more people who may be overweight but not quite obese enough to qualify. A friend using it said it has completely ended all her IBS symptoms, she not only no longer craves the triggers but her digestion and general well-being are significantly better. Its a game changer for so many people.

Yes, my friend has battled with Fibromyalgia for 25 years. Since starting MJ her symptoms have massively reduced and she feels better than she has done in years.

Willowy1982 · 09/04/2025 11:28

I agree. I could have done with this medication before becoming obese, it was awful having to go through the physical and mental torture for so long. I have fibro and slowly got to a BMI of 30 over the last 5 years of struggling. A BMI of 25 would have been a good time to start for me. It's improved my quality of life so much.

Lifesd · 09/04/2025 11:42

I am just about to take part in a stage 3 medical trial for a new weight loss injection that will be taken monthly. I am crossing everything I get the real deal and not the placebo (2/3 chance) this is a worldwide trial and this group is testing it for overweight people and will be a 18 month trail so that is certainly part of the weight loss injection future plans.

Unitarily · 09/04/2025 13:38

Caffeineneedednow · 07/04/2025 09:49

The drug treats the symptoms of the disease in this case it fixes the excessive hunger that obese people face due to dysregulation of satiety signalling. Ie. In obese people the systems that tell you when you are full don't work properly so you feel hungry more, therefore eat more.

So if you compare it to statins, the statins will get your blood pressure under control. Once your blood pressure is within the normal range we don't then go ok let's just stop the drug. In some individuals diet and lifestyle is sufficient to come off the drug however in a large amount of cases it is not.

WLI are the same, some individuals will be able to come off them with diet and lifestyle changes but others will not and will require lifetime or certainly more prolonged treatment. They do not have a time limit on how long it can be taken and the long term trials from diabetes patients show the benefits significantly outweighs the side effects when taken over a prolonged period.

The eat less, more more, just try harder, you are a failure for being fat.... has been around a long time. It does not work on a societal level. If anything this drug shows that fixing your gut hormones and reducing that constant hunger is the answer to obesity rather then shame or assuming all fat people eat nothing but chips and cake.

I say this as someone who has been obese since early childhood. I exercise more then my slim frinds, I know more about nutrition then most of my slim friends but decades of yo yo dieting and fasting in my teens has ficked my metabolism to the point that calorie restriction sends me into a hypoglycemic state. Even after my healthy balanced breakfast with fibre and protein and healthy fats I am staring 2 hours later and if I don't ha e a snack am visibly shaking from low blood sugar by lunch. Just try harder is not the answer.

As a random question - have you tried not having breakfast?

I have a tendency to low blood sugar also. It’s worse if I have breakfast and/ or snack.

I have to break fast with a full balanced meal. A huge one. That makes you full physically in the stomach but also is high calories - say 1500+. Containing large amounts of carbs, protein, and veg.

I can go to anytime using this method. Lunch, even dinner at 10pm. But if I have one thing before the proper break fast meal. Even a singular biscuit. I’m completely fucked and likely to spin into a delirious cold sweat passing out somewhere.
