Then your in the same boat I was in, I was arguing with myself for about 18 months over the weight loss injections.

6 months after starting, I’m 31kgs down. Currently 81kgs, it’s slow and steady now, I don’t know where my end goal is, I take it 1 kg at a time. I just feel so much better for it.

Healthier than she did before she lost four and a half stone.

@Nuttygarlic wow, that’s helpful. Actually she doesn’t have to come off them. Mounjaro in particular can be used indefinitely. My GP recommends at least 18-24 months after reaching goal, and the prescribing doctor considers it lifelong medication. Some people do prefer to come off, but they can go back on if they find they need.

Do you say this to people who’ve just started antidepressants and are feeling better? Or cholesterol meds? Blood pressure tablets?

OP thanks for your post. I totally agree and am hugely grateful to the people who posted in this forum and gave me the prompt to start. It has transformed my health.

Well now you know she doesn’t “have to” come off them, so you don’t need to worry for her.

FannyBawz · 05/04/2025 16:30

some of you sound hungry 🙄

I was curious too, presumably you taper down…?

There are a few options -

Stay on the dose you are on
Taper down to a lower dose
Come off - with the option to restart if necessary
Combination of any or all of the above over time

The idea being to take the option that allows you to maintain your target weight. There is no limit to how long you can continue to use Mounjaro (I think there is a 2 year limit for Ozempic)

It will all be patient led with the support of their pharmacist.

The pp knows perfectly well you weren’t actually worried. They’re just being a little ironic in response to your behaviour.

It’s pretty clear that you were at first trying to puncture the OP’s positivity just to be a twat, and then back-pedalling like mad and deflecting with all the ‘ooh, you’re all so touchy!’

CavalierApproach · 05/04/2025 17:05

Anyway OP, well done. It’s great that you’re feeling so much benefit from the injections.

lunar1 · 05/04/2025 18:30

I’ll taper down, I don’t know if I will ever come off them, I didn’t get mine prescribed online, I have an in person consultant. She said there is more and more research coming out about the long term benefits.

if I do stop them, I’ll be very quick to restart if things even begin to go the wrong way.

The sharp response you got was because 'well what happens when you have to stop taking them?' is such a standard response by those against WLI that it's made it to the bingo board. It sits along such gems as 'you're stealing them from diabetics', 'why don't you just eat less and move more', vague 'concerns' about their newness and how 'it's cheating to use them'.

How have the side effects been? (Genuine question before others come at me) . Ate you worried about unknown long term side effects? (Also genuine as its a big worry for me)

MsPug · 06/04/2025 08:27

I think if you were big all your life you might have to stay on but if you got situational big (you know what I mean?) say due to lockdown or menopause etc then maybe it's a reset and you can come off. I have absolutely no source for this 😂

For antidepressants yeah I've asked that question - how are you feeling about coming off them. Cholesterol and blood pressure tablets you need to survive - so not the same thing. For weight loss none of us on these injections are being told by a doctor we 'have to take them'. Infact most people on them haven't even seen a doctor - they've bought them by choice online.

For weight loss jabs there is a choice about it. The OP could answer she has no plans to, or she could say she has done xyz to prepare. But some of the companies providing the weight loss jabs make you come off when you reach a BMI of 23.5.

It's not an unreasonable question. We're on the weight loss injection board. Not AIBU. People here, are here because they are using the jabs or are considering using the jabs.

@lunar1 well done on your weight loss. Which injection did you use? How have your side effects been throughout?
I took my first jabs (wegovy) on Friday. Side effects haven't been good to be honest - not severe but I've felt pretty rough since I took the jab. I'm actually thinking 'not for me'. I'd love to be a success story like you.

I'm the same in reverse. I've generally always been a healthy weight most of my life. Not thin, not even slim - just average - top end of healthy BMI - the type of weight where you're in the green but always wanting to drop 10lbs before a holiday or special event. But last 10 years I've slowly gained combination of age, having kids etc and I don't really notice it in a weird way. It's the last 3yrs I've pushed into obese. In a mirror I don't see it all that much. But then I see a photo or a video of me and I'm like - wtf! 😂 it's genuinely shocking because it's not how I see myself day to day.

lunar1 · 06/04/2025 10:15

I’m on ozempic, and I’m seeing a doctor for my prescription and supervision. Ozempic because that’s is what she could guarantee supply of when I started, and it’s working so I don’t want to swap.

I’ve been big all my life, this is the lightest I’ve been since I was about 12/13.

side effects, initially I got headaches and nausea plus some vertigo. Nothing after the first three weeks. With the exception of one week when we increased the dose too much and I was sick all week.

I am less worried about the long term effects of ozempic than I am about the long term effects of obesity, the latter are known, the former, there is evidence of safety among the diabetic population who have been on it a long time.

lunar1 · 06/04/2025 10:22

I will say it’s not easy, I watch my diet and I exercise to some extent most days either at home or swimming.

I can diet without and I have before, it’s very hard to explain. With ozempic, I don’t think about food, I cook nice meals or go out, eat a smaller than average portion and forget about eating till the next meal.

without the injection, I can eat healthy balanced portions, but food noise is in my head 100% of the time to some extent. I feel like Ozempic has given me control for the first time in my life.

if I binge eat one day, it’s probably 25% of what it was before because I’m full quicker, I forgive myself and carry on as before.

these are the issues with coming off the injection I can foresee, because when it’s almost time for the next dose, or it needs increasing, that noise comes back just the same as before, so with that in mind, I’m prepared for it to end up being a lifelong drug, for me at least.
