Is anyone who isn’t diabetic getting mounjaro on the nhs

I’m really close to starting mounjaro after doing lots of research. I’m 53 and around 16 stone 9lbs (bmi around 40). I also have high blood pressure.

Looking online it still seems as if the nhs are planning on rolling it out very slowly and in my area focusing on people already referred to the weight management service (who have a wait list of almost 2.5 years).

I’m getting pretty desperate and think I may as well just order online rather than wait but obviously cost is a concern. Wondering if anyone who isn’t diabetic has been prescribed on the nhs?

thank you.

Apparently you can only get prescribed up to 5mg on the NHS if you're lucky to get it at all whereas buying it privately through a pharmacy you can get up to 15mg.

I know people who have finally been prescribed it for diabetes after having to try loads of different meds first that failed to control their blood sugar, but then they decided to buy it privately anyway because the NHS wouldn't let them increase beyond 5mg.

I’m prescribed by NHS for diabetes and they have upped me to 10mg because I asked. My sugars were well under control at 5mg but I was noticing a reduction in suppression and weightloss and pointed out that getting into healthy BMI would benefit my diabetes and every other aspect of my health. The doctor agreed, I’ll stay at 10mg now until I hit my goal then likely reduce down to 5mg long term to maintain and keep on top of the diabetes.

If it works out as only about £25 a week, A prescription is £10 anyway, that means it would only save you £15 anyway (???)

@Kendodd where are you getting it from for £25 a week (£100 a month?) or arentkj switching supplier every month to use codes etc. are you doing bonus dose?

I’m in the frustrating position where the private suppliers won’t issue it to me because of a drug I’m on.

My GP says it’s ok to take as it doesn’t actively interact the drug. The risk is the slowing down on the stomach emptying which they felt could be minimised by them increasing the blood tests I already had to to monitor any changes to drug level in my blood….but they can’t prescribe it for me.

Given my weight gain has happened as side effects of drugs I’m on, I really think MJ could work for me. Have meeting with one of my consultants next week - the one who started me on the drug that the MJ suppliers are concerned about.

I have also thought about trying more private suppliers but I suspect they’ll all say the same.

I really feel for you @FelineWhiskers - it’s a real catch 22. I had this issue with mounjari when I first looked into it in August 2024 - I couldn’t get a prescription from the private pharmacies as a type 2 diabetic- but that had changed when I looked into it again in January 2025. I think approaching your GP for sign off is a good idea - my GP is really pleased I’m accessing mounjaro privately as I’ve been losing weight on it . If your own GP can’t help maybe look at a private GP appointment. It is frustrating - I put in 6 stone in 6 months on medication- going from a healthy BMI to super morbidly obese - whilst I’m happy my immediate health concern was dealt with having this weight gain causes other concerns and in my local area there is no prescription of weight loss injections

It's not available yet on NHS for weight loss, but my diabetes nurse said that it should be at some point soon. She said you would need to have a certain BMI and another condition, in order to be eligible.

She also said that if I started paying privately, it wouldn't stop me from getting it on the NHS.

When I had asked my doctor prior to that, he just said a flat no. My level has come down from 54 to 46 so they say that the medication is working so I can't have it for diabetes.

I hope that you don't have to be referred to the weight loss team first though, because he could have done that and started the ball rolling. I haven't done that so far as I don't want to be patronised and told that I need to eat more veg - I hate veg and have done since being forced to eat them as a child. I hate the smell, taste and texture of anything apart from carrots.

I have been told by a gastric consultant that I would qualify for weight loss surgery but I don't want to go down that route.

I'm not on it.
It was someone else who said this amount, I just copied them.

I wish I could spare £25 per week!!

OldCottageGreenhouse · 03/04/2025 09:36

I get WeGovy on the NHS for weight loss and not diabetic.

SilenceInside · 03/04/2025 09:49

@OldCottageGreenhouse were you on the tier 3 weight management programme? Can I ask what your BMI was when you started to get Wegovy prescribed, and if you don't mind, how long did you have to be on waiting lists or work through previous tiers/programmes?

Jintybabes · 18/04/2025 21:11

I applied to Shemed as I've type 2 diabetes and high B/P. I'm on medication for both with ok results, and a bmi of 34. Got a reply to say I'm not eligible, due to medical reasons 😅 no further explaining. Absolutely gutted. My GP won't prescribe. So not sure where to go from here? Has anyone else been rejected, if so where did you go next?

CameronCook · 18/04/2025 21:29

I had a BMI of nearly 40, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and blood sugar and asked the GP who said they would love to be able to prescribe it for me but it just wasn't possible yet.

I saw no point in waiting and paid privately, now am nearly 7 stone down. It was worth every penny and more. I have saved money as not buying crap / takeaways etc.

The NHS has released their criteria for the current roll out. It' s BMI of 40+ and at least 4 comorbidities from these 5 (type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obstructive sleep apnea, dyslipideamia)

If you fit this description then contact your GP.

bridgetreilly · 30/06/2025 10:34

I think the type 2 diabetes is a bit confusing. You can already be prescribed on the NHS with type 2 IF it’s not under control with other medication. I have been on it for three months with this scenario.

So I think the new guidelines apply if your blood sugar is being managed with metformin or similar, and you have the other comorbidities.

InfoSecInTheCity · 30/06/2025 10:51

That’s how I read it @bridgetreilly I was put on Mounjaro because I was on max dose of Metformin and insulin morning and night but still had high blood sugars. I’d also eliminated all carbs from my diet barring green veg and dairy.

I think what they’re saying is BMI 40+ and controlled t2 diabetes + 3 other comorbities.
