Still lots of Easter eggs- MJ & prices to blame?

Slightly tongue in cheek but all my local supermarkets are still fully stocked with Easter eggs, now obviously I’m not suggesting for one second that some of the MJ users on here would have quite happily demolished one or three in one sitting but it did make me wonder…is MJ now impacting sales of confectionery etc?

I know the eggs are more expensive this year and supermarkets have been hesitant on over discounting them but there does appear to still be a lot around, shelves with just a few missing seems to be a common sight. Has MJ made a dent in the sales forecasts I wonder? Coupled with higher prices could it be that at Easter weekend you’ll be able to still buy some?

Truth be told, we’d have usually had around 8-10 by now, it’s 1 so far this year. Anyone else?

It's still 2.5 weeks till Easter, plenty of time yet

TY78910 · 01/04/2025 13:55

I haven’t bought mine yet but it’s ages until Easter! I’ve seen them on shelves since Xmas and it’s kind of made me used to them so I don’t think of buying yet….

They put them out to encourage people to buy well in advance of Easter, knowing people will eat them between January and April. This year sales seem to be much slower before the ‘Easter rush’ kicks in.

Easter isn't for over two weeks yet, of course the shelves are still going to be full. They're not going to stop stocking them over a fortnight before. If they're emptied, they going to restock them.

We've never bought Easter eggs and eaten them before Easter either. I'd have thought most people did the same.

shellyleppard · 01/04/2025 14:07

Its the price that has put me off....and the chocolate doesn't taste good anymore. Disappointed ex chocoholic here 😞😞 a bar of bournville was £2.85 , toblerone £7.50 in my local co op at the weekend!!!

WeAllHaveWings · 01/04/2025 14:07

How many people actually eat easter eggs before easter?

They are ridiculously expensive when mostly just chocolate. So I would have ate a cheaper bar of chocolate instead of the egg if I wanted a chocolate fix.

Some mini eggs are out of stock at our Tesco.

SilenceInside · 01/04/2025 14:08

The proper large boxed eggs we only buy the ones for the children and that's it, so no change there for me.

What has changed is that I'm not adding the small ones like Cadburys Caramel, Creme Eggs, or similar to the weekly shop under the pretence they are treats for the children and then eating those myself....

Edensnapz · 01/04/2025 14:09

I'm really looking forward to Easter this year on mj. Usually, I would be dreading the inevitable influx of chocolate in the house, the inevitable loss of willpower and subsequent chocolate binges. I wouldn't be able to stop myself buying extras in the run up.

But now, I have no desire to eat chocolate and have no worries resisting the huge piles that get bought for DC (who never eat them all and I always finish them off). I feel confident that I won't let my progress slide and it's liberating 😀.

So yes, given the numbers on mj or similar, I bet it will have an impact on sales, as I'm sure many others will feel the same as me! Maybe easter egg producers should think about diversifying and look into making nicely packaged, protein packed, healthly Easter eggs 🤔 maybe not 😆.

On a more serious note, I hope they increase of WLI use does have an impact on overall confectionary sales and has an effect on the types of food we see in supermarkets - more cheaper, healthier food and less discounted crappy food that is hard to resist.

BlueScallop · 01/04/2025 14:11

I'm on Mounjaro and have never eaten an Easter egg before Easter Sunday in my life! I am always surprised that people do. Just bought the kids' Easter eggs today, I don't usually get them much in advance. There's always loads in the shops, but I wouldn't be surprised if weight loss jabs and cost was having an impact on sales.

This is not judging AT ALL but do you mean you eat Easter Eggs before Easter?? I don’t know anyone who does this (although most of my mates and me are Catholic and give chocolate up for Lent).

Pumpkinforever · 01/04/2025 14:24

I think the type of chocolate being sold has also changed. There was a feature about how a lot of supermarket chocolate has more palm oil than milk in it. I think we are seeing more of a kick back against UPFs than MJ usage.

Tohaveandtohold · 01/04/2025 14:47

I’m sure it’s mostly about the cost and school is still in session, they’ll mostly be bought during the school holidays and closer to Easter. Im no longer on a WLI but I’ve never eaten a full Easter egg, I always just taste some of the kids mini Cadbury eggs or make some cookies with some and eat a few so nothing different here as it’ll be the same this year, maybe I’ll eat just one mini egg cookie instead of 3.

Sampler · 01/04/2025 16:55

I’ve noticed entire walls of Easter eggs in my local Tesco - was wondering if it’s just the chocolate tastes like oily shit these days since the Americans bought it all over ? It’s also slightly more expensive than last year. Maybe it will clear out nearer Easter but I won’t (MJ or not) be eating cadburys etc.

Erm, yes, I do. Doesn’t everyone? 🫣

Just like mince pies and Christmas cake from Halloween til mid Jan.

Why would anyone buy an Easter egg to eat themselves? Just buy a bar of chocolate. Do you mean you buy them for children then lose willpower and eat them and replace them?
Am another one baffled by the idea of snacking on over packaged cheap chocolate.

Am on Wegovy and may have contributed to a slight loss in bread and cheese sales locally. .

LadyNorthStar · 01/04/2025 21:29

We would normally have eaten quite a few by now but we haven’t bought any so far. This year even the offer price seems expensive and I’m not prepared to pay that much.

Interesting. I went into Hotel Chocolate on mother’s Day to buy a box of chocolates. The only one I wanted had “vegan“ written all over it. I asked assistant if I could have a chocolate made with milk (as have no idea what kind of substitute they are using)and she said no, that this vegan box was much healthier 🤔! What they really might have been doing is using cheaper palm oil, rather than milk, and passing it off as healthy “vegan”.

I also don't eat Christmas cake till Christmas Day when we cut it. Mince pies feel fine, like mini eggs would in the run up to Easter. But an actual boxed Easter egg is something I always thought you receive on Easter Sunday, not before. I don't think I know anyone who eats those before, honestly!
