Today I spent the majority of a walk to the high street and the bus ride back thinking about the can of Pimm’s in the fridge and the box of creme eggs I have in my cupboard. I was so exhausted thinking about it that basically on the bus I finished my juniper questionnaire.

I can’t control my sugar cravings and I’m now 40 and pre-diabetic, I’ve been trying for three months to eat better and exercise and although exercise routine is pretty good now I just can’t control the eating.

The cravings and food noise is too much. I’ve had enough.
The reasons I haven’t before are the lack of info on long term safety, possible side effects and basically if I lose it (have 2 stone to lose) what do I do when I come off and the sugar cravings come back? (Hoping the injections will really help with that).

But… one step at a time.
will look around for hints and tips!

I’ve also just ordered my first mounjaro after thinking about it for months. I can’t go on like I am, I’m getting fatter and fatter and it’s got worse since menopause. I was never overweight till peri menopause and now I’m 17 stone ( I’m only 5’2”) 😩
my blood pressure & cholesterol are up, my knees and hips ache and I’m always tired. Everything is an effort and I hate being like this but I also can’t bear to be hungry, so I’m useless at portion control. I just want my appetite to be smaller so I can eat less without feeling so hungry!

The theory is that after quite a few months on the meds you won’t be as attracted to the sugar and that you will see the results of not eating it. It’s not foolproof but you could use your time on the meds to have a spring clean of your diet. Also protein is the main thing you should be concentrating on and this takes up a lot of time !

It’s given me time to think what I’m eating and why. So when I eat a ‘treat’ is normally a small bit of good chocolate.
Also there are are benefits to reducing sugar and I have noticed my skin is better for example.
Going shopping is great because I forget to eat when I’m out which is much more convenient than running around looking for food/getting angry and panicking.

What do I do when I come off and the sugar cravings come back?

There is no trials or evidence to suggest that won't happen. In the trials they observed participants who stopped using Mounjaro regained 50% of the weight they lost within a year which implies the food noise and appetite suppression effects dimmish.

Mounjaro does not give you sustained reduction in sugar cravings once you stop - it would be nice if it would! The options are stay on it for maintenance longer term, or try to see if you can cope without it because you have made and can sustain significant lifestyle changes and habits. I have not been able to do that in 20+ years of dieting so I don't see why that would change now if I didn't have the support from Mounjaro.

It is a stage of this journey that I think will be the hardest and worries me the most. I am currently planning to be on GLP1s for life, whether that is a lower dose of injections, or if new forms come out in the next few years such as tablet form or if Eli Lilly are successful with their research into an annual injection.

Yes, you CAN stay on Mounjara on a maintenance dose forever (just choose the pharmacies that are open to this). This is because the drug has been around a long time and is well-tested therefore.

You can’t, however, do this with Wegovy or Ozempic.

This is what finally swayed it for me for Mounjaro: I have no interest in losing weight and then cycling up and down again, again.

Good luck OP.

ps. Re. sugar cravings - I still have them actually. But just eat less and am satisfied. Most recently I haven’t touched the dark chocolate I normally have a stab at in the evening, which is unusual
for me. However I will crave a chocolate biscuit, but usually just one 🤷‍♀️
