Wanting to start Mounjaro but the horror stories ?!

looking to start soon, BMI just over 30, need to lose 1.5-2 stone. I want to start so much but my friend has told me about some horror stories on how a woman has died from taking the drug !

That woman had a medical condition and shouldn't have taken MJ.

I've been on it for 7 months and have had an upset stomach 3 times. And that was after eating things I shouldn't have but did anyway!

There are so so so many people on this who are fine.

It's changed my life. Not only lost weight but also made my anxiety better, my IBD better and my insomnia too.

It's worth a try.

DustyLee123 · 28/03/2025 15:56

I’m aware of a woman locally who bought it off a mate of a mate. She ended up in hospital as the drug was actually insulin. Just make sure you get it from a proper supplier.
My BMI is 31, 3 stone to lose, I’m considering it too.

Happyearlyretirement · 28/03/2025 16:01

Do it, it’s a brilliant drug that helps in more ways than just losing weight. Only buy from a professional prescriber.

AuntieDote · 28/03/2025 16:09

You need to do some proper reading/ research around how the drug works, the potential side effects both minor and more serious, any risk factors and basically weigh up risk/ reward if it’s worth it for you.

The drug is licensed in the UK to be used as a treatment for obesity. That means that there’s enough evidence that for a great many people it will be both effective and safe. It’s also been used in more or less the same way but for longer in the US so there’s plenty of evidence there. It’s also been used for longer still for type 2 diabetes management.

Correctly sourced from a reputable provider who has done a proper evaluation, and used as directed - it’s considered to be a safe drug that’s well tolerated by most people who qualify for it.

But all drugs come with risks - from paracetamol and ibuprofen upwards. It’s very common for users to experience side effects, ranging from mild to really unpleasant. And more rarely yes, there can be severe side effects including pancreatitis.

Living with obesity also comes with unpleasant side effects and poses long term risks to your health. So it’s a case of weighing up whether it’s worth the risk to you personally and only you can decide that - perhaps in consultation with a healthcare professional if that would be helpful.

For me, it has some fairly severe gastrointestinal effects (diarrhoea and vomiting basically) any time I go above the lower doses. I had to take a break, but started again on the lowest dose and am managing it much better this time. It has not been an easy journey and I’ve had to slow it right down as the very fast loss, whilst it felt great to achieve, unfortunately came with too high an impact on my quality of life. How I use it now is less effective, but still just enough for a slow and steady loss and still worth it to me. But that’s my choice and you have to make your own.

Most of the scare stories in the media, as well as the friend who knows someone who knows someone who ended up in hospital types, when you trace it back it turns out they were getting it the same place they get their knock off botox, or they’d lied to get it prescribed so never should have been taken it, or they’re using the leftovers from a friend who tried it, or they’re not using it as prescribed. I haven’t personally come across such a story where the person actually qualified for the drug, was prescribed it correctly and took it according to instructions - not to say it doesn’t happen, but it’s not as common as the horror stories make out.

ToooBig · 28/03/2025 16:21

I felt v tired on it for the first 12 weeks, and had a few episodes of my blood sugar dropping a bit. I also think I've had a bit of brain fog, but that could be perimenopause 😉

Apart from that, I've had no side effects! Definitely nothing scary! I've had NO gastro issues at all. No nausea, no vomitting, no constipation or diarrhea, etc...

Now the tiredness has lifted, I also just generally feel great!!!

I'm not going to advise you to go for it or not, as that's up to you! But not everyone has the horrible side effects that get talked about, and some like me just generally have a positive experience!

SilenceInside · 28/03/2025 16:26

Given that there are thousands of people taking Mounjaro, at some point someone will die whilst taking it and it will be recorded on the death certificate. That doesn’t change or increase the risks of taking it for you. The story your friend was helpfully telling you was probably about the Scottish nurse who developed pancreatitis (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cz6jg6nw2zeo.amp) whilst taking Mounjaro. She was obese, which in itself raises your risk of pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is a known and very rare side effect of Mounjaro. It’s a prescription medication, they often have possible serious side effects and the judgement as to whether to prescribe weighs up the potential benefits with the risks of taking the medication.

If you don’t feel that the risks of taking a prescription medication to treat obesity are outweighed by the benefits of losing weight to your health, then you don’t need to take it. There are many other approaches to losing weight that you could try instead.

MaybeMrs · 28/03/2025 16:27

Do it. Its been a game changer for me! I've lost 47lbs in 14 weeks. Very minor issues, mainly constipation but that's been it. I feel great and wish I'd done it a lot sooner.

SevernWonders · 28/03/2025 17:34

Do it. Buy from a proper pharmacist.

The stories of people dying / being seriously ill are usually either people who

bought from a beautician / friend of a friend
lied about their weight to get it
would have got pancreatitis because of weight loss not the jab

The stories of millions of people using it and losing weight with minimal side effects don't sell papers.

FWIW my only side effects were a bit of hair loss (normal with fast weight loss but sorted with collagen supplements) and feeling permanently chilly. 6 and a half stone down.

PsychoHotSauce · 28/03/2025 17:38

my friend has told me about some horror stories on how a woman has died from taking the drug

So... 'one' horror story then? Out of the millions of people who take it?

Thank you for everyone who replied

It’s a wonder drug, honestly go for it.

QueefQueen80s · 29/03/2025 22:01

I know two who have collapsed with kidney pain and one of those developed osteoporosis BUT they were only slightly overweight and have history of eating disorders. So their bodies had been abused lots over the years.
If you have a lot of weight to lose then the risks of staying big outweigh the risks of the drug. Get to a healthy weight and come off.

IHateMozzies · 29/03/2025 22:26

I’ve only had tiredness with it. Check out monj.co.uk for the best prices and where to buy from.

MajorCarolDanvers · 29/03/2025 22:31

I’ve been on it for 7 months and am now at 15mg.

I get burpy on the day of my injection. That’s it.

I’ve lost just over 4 months and feel and look better than I’ve done in years.

Eight8eight · 29/03/2025 22:33

I was really worried about using it but I'm so glad I took the plunge. I've only had two jabs so far but am already 12lb down in two weeks. I have quite a long way to go but feeling optimistic. Side effects have been limited to a metallic taste and wanting to go slightly less than usual. Keeping an eye on protein and fibre, and using fybogel every now and again.

DustyLee123 · 30/03/2025 07:51

Are those of you on it intending to stay on a low dose for life, or come off it completely? I’ve heard that the food noise comes back in a week when you come off it.

A lot of people seem to be incredibly opinionated and reactive about this drug. Even intelligent people. A friend of mine started ranting about “people dying” on weight loss jabs the other day. I couldn’t be arsed to deal with her ignorance and tell her I was on them!

Edited

This is a medication to treat a physiological issue, I won’t come off other medications when they control my disease.

Some may find they can come off the medication with the changes they have been able to make, others may need it to maintain a healthy weight. I am expecting this to be a long term commitment for me, I plan to go back down to the lowest dose possible for me to maintain, if I do stop needing it, it will be a bonus.

Hopefully in the future there will be other forms available which make maintenance easier and cheaper - a few pharmaceutical companies are looking into tablet forms of GLP1s and Eli Lilly is looking into an annual injection.

lovethepuppies · 30/03/2025 13:16

Been on and off it for about a year and a half with no side effects at all apart from weight loss. It won’t suit everyone but just wanted to throw a positive experience in
too
