Do you feel faint if you go low calories with mourning?

So I am currently being successful on a VLCD. I have my weddding in August and never felt so terrified about my weight. It’s a great motivator and i can certainly stick to the plan. However, I can feel quite faint and light headed. This prompts me to need a higher calorie day every so often. Nothing crazy 1500-1800.

I’ve seen people on GLP-1s say they are only averaging 500-700 calories. Do these people feel faint on this low a calories?

If you are on a VLCD and have been for a while, there is a risk of malnourishment causing issues. Is the food you are eating nutrient dense? Are you getting the right amino acids/protein, vitamins and minerals? Are you now at the lower end of your BMI? Low BP when you are pretty low weight can also cause lightheadedness and dizziness.
How many calories are you actually eating? My weight loss calories were 1500, my maintenance calories are 1800. You considering 1500-1800 to be higher calorie indicates you are eating way less than that usually so you are likely not eating enough.

I don't think 500-700 calories a day is a great idea. Having had a loved one with anorexia, a restricted intake like this led to hair falling out, fainting, low heart rate, anaemia - even before she became underweight. I've lost about 3 stone on mounjaro over six months eating about 1000-1500 cals per day, but one day when I did eat very little, I almost fainted at the gym. Losing a few extra pounds isn't worth making yourself ill for. I hope you have a lovely wedding day - I'm sure you will look beautiful.

People on Mounjaro who are averaging 500 to 700 calories a day are not typical and are not something to aim for, it's a problem for them and would be a problem for you. People would likely feel faint, yes, if they are not eating enough calories. Mounjaro doesn't protect you from that.

My eating is INCREDIBLY nutrient dense. I hit all my vitamins and minerals plus macros.

I have been doing roughly 900 calories a day as I struggle with slow weight loss.

I’m on Mounjaro and eat 1200-1400 calories a day. Just to set the scene.

Yes, if people eat 700 calories a day on Mounjaro they are at the same risk of fainting as anyone else eating such a pitifully small amount of calories. If not potentially higher risk.

Mounjaro increases Insulin production and your bodies sensitivity to the insulin being produced. So you are more likely to experience Low Blood Sugar which can cause fainting.

SharpOpalNewt · 26/03/2025 12:09

You could eat something like 800-1000 calories doing something like the Very Fast 800 whereby you are also eating according to the plan - very low carb, lots of protein and fibre, lots of green veg and full fat dairy etc. But it is usually only for a maximum of 12 weeks and best to discuss with your GP first.

I have about 1400 a day and exercise and have lost 10lb in just over three weeks so far.

Mounjaro INCREASES insulin production? I assumed it was the reverse. As someone who has PCOS and has been borderline insulin resistant at my heaviest (35 pounds ago) that is a massive concern.

Darn it! Was hoping Mounjaro would be a panacea for my dieting issues

If you are insulin resistant then you want more insulin. The lack of it or rather the inability of your body to adequately respond to it, means you don’t break down glucose well so the glucose from food you eat builds in your blood and is stored as fat, the building up in your blood causes high blood sugar which can affect function of kidneys, liver, nerves etc and when it reaches a certain point that is when you are diagnosed as diabetic.

i use Mounjaro because I am T2 diabetic, the Mounjaro has replaced my insulin injections and reduced my blood sugar levels to normal range, as well as enabling me to maintain a calorie controlled, low carb diet for the last 6 months so I could lose 4 stone.

Vegemite123 · 26/03/2025 20:14

I've been on Mounjaro for 5 months, and have lost over 20% of my body weight. It is very, very rare that my calorie intake drops below 1000 in a day. I'm fairly active, and eat probably around 1500-1700 calories a day.

Zempy · 26/03/2025 20:25

I’ve been on Mounjaro a few months and my average calorie intake is 800. Like PP said, it’s no different to doing the Fast 800 diet, except you have injected yourself with some hormones to help with willpower.

I have low blood pressure but haven’t felt faint at all on MJ.

Edited to add that I am not very active due to disabilities.

SilenceInside · 26/03/2025 21:30

It is different to the Fast 800 as that is advised for 12 weeks only, not ongoing.
