Hello, has anyone been Prescribed weight loss injections with a family history of thyroid cancer? I filled out the questionnaire yesterday with my juniper, and have since read that I may not be suitable for weight loss injections due to my mum having thyroid cancer in the past. Nobody has ever said anything about me being higher risk of developing it.

Hi! Before taking mounjaro I read a lot about it. One of the first articles I read was about how rats given mounjaro developed thyroid cancer, pretty much all of them.

It completely put me off and I decided not to take it.

After a few months I decided to re-visit the research and read more. I have since discovered that actually in human studies, there doesn't appear to be a significant risk of developing thyroid cancer on GLP1s. However, the rat study is of concern and I think, as far as I can tell, the medical profession feels that based on the limited research to date, it's ok for people with NO risk of developing thyroid cancer, to take GLP1s. However, for people with a family history, given the rat study findings, the advice is not to take it.

It feels horrible to say, because I am incredibly lucky to be taking mounjaro and it feels v unfair that not everyone can benefit from it, but in your position I absolutely wouldn't take it. The research to date does place you at greater risk of developing thyroid cancer. I think the feeling among scientists is, if anyone is going to get thyroid cancer as a result of a GLP1, it will be those at current greatest risk due to family history.

Things might change in the future once more research is done. But for now, I wouldn't risk it on your position

I read somewhere that it depends what kind of thyroid cancer (as there are a few different kinds).

I seem to remember that I have also read somewhere that in the EU they have dropped this as an issue of concern possibly based on more recent research or a different interpretation.

However, doctors here are super cautious on this and so it’s probably unlikely that you would be prescribed in the UK unfortunately.

It is usually based on a family history of medullary thyroid cancer which I think is one of the most aggressive ones. Some ask you for thyroid cancer generally and some specifically that one.
