5mg not working - should I go down?

So I have finished my first month of 5mg and just about to start my second ( I did 1 month on 2.5)

iv lost 1 lbs this last week, and I just feel deflated!

the 5mg kicks my butt the first two days of taking it, I have to physically force myself to eat then the rest of the week I’m hungry ( but stay within my calorie deficit)

iv had more carbs this week because that’s what I can only stomach when I feel nauseous from the jab!

I don’t think I could move up to 7.5mg as I don’t think I’d be able to cope with the symptoms.

I lost more weight on the 2.5 - should I go back down?

Going up to 5mg was the hardest for me. You are doubling your dosage, after that it's a smaller % increase. I continued up the doses every time and was OK on 7.5+.

It is working if you have suppression. It's only been two months and it takes a while for your system to adjust to it. The dose has doubled, you have to be patient and find what works. Eating carbs may be what is giving you the nausea though.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 17/03/2025 07:08

No. I would only suggest going down if the side effects are too much.

If the 2.5 was working so well, why did you increase?

Logically, you will have lost more on the 2.5 as you will have had all of the water weight loss in the first couple of weeks. I certainly lost the most on 2.5 but it will ALWAYS slow down after the start. Also, a pound a week is a totally sensible amount to lose.

You do need to aim to eat a protein rich diet as it will help you feel fuller and help to prevent too much muscle loss, hair loss etc. Carbs make you hold more water which will impact your losses. You are probably hungry because you haven’t really eaten for the first couple of days so your body is telling you that you need fuel. I would suggest finding something to help settle the nausea (which may well be caused by the hunger!). Persevere with the 5 and it will settle eventually.

The average weight loss on the Mounjaro 72 week trials was 1/2 lb a week.

I'd you don't keep your expectations realistic you will be constantly disappointed. This isn't supposed to be a fast weight loss journey.

Going down won't work, your body is getting used to a higher dose so a lower dose will be less effective. The reason why you lost so much on 2.5mg is because it was new to your body and most of what you lost will be water weight not fat as it reduces inflammation.
Are you tracking calories? Eating within a deficit? Eating more protein? I'd advise drinking lots of water, it really helps with losses and limit carbs and alcohol, they cause insulin spikes and make you crave more carbs and sugars and retain water and cause bloating.
1lb a week is an average loss and everyone's losses slow down after the first few weeks.
The key is drinking lots of water and eating protein.

Honestly if you are hungry on day 3 I would move up to 7.5mg. Certainly wouldn't move down. Some people micro dose I think and give themselves 2.5 mg at the start of the week and then another 2.5mg on day 3. I've never done that so no idea.

Im in a calories deficit, I don’t drink alcohol. I don’t eat meat, I only have eggs and fish.

I drink buckets of water.

Iv lost 2 stone 3lbs so far ( in 9 weeks) - it’s this week has been the slowest and I wonder if this will be it from now on ..

It's taken me a year to lose 2.5 stone. You've lost an incredible amount! But yes, I think it's normal for loss to slow. It's a long game.

WeAllHaveWings · 17/03/2025 08:32

It is pretty common for those who lose a lot in the first 4-5 weeks of 2.5mg to level off a bit in following weeks (regardless of dose) as their body reacts to the losses.

This gives 5mg a bit of a bad reputation, or results in some unnecessarily moving from 2.5mg to 5mg.

The main thing is if you can keep to your weekly calorie deficit (and not too low). The losses will eventually start happening again.

Summerhillsquare · 17/03/2025 08:37

You've lost an awful lot of weight quickly, your body needs to adjust and you need to concentrate on building good habits. Stop weighing yourself frequently.
