MJ and sleep issues

Hi
This may be completely unrelated but asking if anyone else has had same issue.
I've been on 2.5mg for three weeks. Normally jab on Tuesday but extended it to Friday last week as it was still working well. No other side effects, but since Friday I have barely slept more than 2-3hrs each night, and it's doing my head in!
This has happened before but only maybe once or twice a month for one night.
I appreciate no-one on here can give medical advice so I'm going to ask Med Express too. But having tried all the tricks to get my brain to switch off, I'm getting desperate. I'm worried about using any other meds (natural sleep aids, anti-histamine) and the last time I used magnesium for sleep that also kept me awake all night
Any ideas or thoughts from fellow insomniacs would be appreciated!
Thank you

No advice OP but I sympathise. I’m already a bad sleeper, and MJ has ramped it up to another level.

I've not had it too badly with MJ but when I've been low carbing in the past have been very alert and wakeful and a bit wired at night. I think it might be to do with being in ketosis and your body burning fat rapidly? Just my opinion as it felt similar to them amazing alert and energised feeling I had during the day when I was eating that way.

This is a good shout. I certainly feel more 'wired' and noticed despite being exhausted I'm not falling asleep in front of the telly at 8pm like I normally do.
I'll try and increased carb day today
Thank you

It's a bit of a nightmare, isn't it? Or at least it would be if we could get to sleep to actually have nightmares 🙄

When I had it before it was when my body was adjusting to lower carbs and calories so hopefully either way it will pass.
On the whole I find MJ makes me more tired, especially the first day or two after taking it and I sleep very well on it

Pandora71 · 17/03/2025 07:01

MJ definitely affects my sleep. Recommend upping the physical activity in the day and tiring yourself out.

Thanks ... I'm not great with the physical activity but will try a walk before bedtime. That might help. Thank you 😊

High strength vitamin D and magnesium helps my chronic insomnia which worsened with mj. I take it on an evening and sleep through most nights, which I've struggled with for 20 years.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 17/03/2025 12:08

I took my first jab yesterday and barely slept last night. Just wide awake, repeatedly!

It seems like its an actual 'thing' then.
You all have my utmost sympathy; sleep deprivation is an absolute bastard!
Off to get high strength Vitamin D, magnesium, and a hammer in case all else fails 😴
Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

I went from being an excellent sleeper (v lucky!) to having terrible sleep patterns on MJ, mostly due to the raised heart rate. I was awake several times in the night.

Happily, 8 weeks in (& having moved to 5mg) this has stopped and I am back to sleeping well unless I eat too much, too late or have any alcohol (even a glass).

In turn, being less tired, means I am back to my pre-MJ energy and exercise levels which will also be helping. In hindsight despite being so tired I should have carried on with my routine.

Good luck OP!

Cabinfever20 · 17/03/2025 13:06

I’ve found this too. I’ve had terrible sleep problems for years and take a quarter of a zopiclone sleeping tablet which more or less helps. Sometimes I go up to half a tablet. I’m conscious it’s addictive so that’s why I don’t take a whole tablet. After about 6 weeks of mounjaro even half a tablet wasn’t helping me get off to sleep. Last night I decided if the sleeping tablets aren’t working I might as well try and use this time to come off them, so I didn’t take anything last night and was still awake at 3am! I then dozed on and off until 9am. Fortunately I’m retired so don’t have kids and work to worry about. Hopefully this will pass in time.

Zempy · 17/03/2025 13:12

I’m the opposite. I struggle to stay awake!

Am having an afternoon nap whenever possible and sleeping 9/10 hours a night.

On 15mg of MJ now and my sleep is awful right now - waking up wired at 2/3/4am for 2-3 hours. Can’t take magnesium as it gave me the shits Confused

Ugh ... Magnesium left me even more wired, but thankfully no 💩
I guess for every up (weight loss) there's likely to be a down, but the sleep deprivation is bloody torture.
Wishing you a peaceful night soon 😊

I've also just ordered some Phenergan anti-histamine but am waiting for MedExpress to let me know it's ok to take alongside Mounjaro

I find this all very interesting because in my early days of taking MJ I used to sleep really well for a couple of days after a jab. That completely changed to being wide awake and unable to sleep for half the week after a dose at around the 3 or 4th month. Solgar chelated magnesium helped a lot but eventually wasn't making much difference.

I am fortunately extremely sensitive to antihistamines, and find even a half tablet of cetirizine hydrochloride on jab night knocks me out completely. The downside is it can leave me a bit drowsy the next day, but a half tablet rather than a whole one seems to minimise that. I have never tried or wanted to try actual sleeping tablets, but antihistamines are amazing for MJ disturbed sleep! You should find the same with Phenergan - maybe like me a half tablet will do the job.

I do have to say though, I am now 38 weeks of taking MJ and I am finding that my sleep patterns are actually normalising, and I don't have the stark staring, full-on wide-awake thing any more.

Good morning @IrisPallida and , thank you, that's so helpful to hear. I did manage to sleep last night with the aid of half a sleeping tablet, thank god. But I can't get anymore and don't want to become reliant on them.
The Phenergan should arrive today so I'll try without tonight and then just try half as you suggested the following night if I need to.
Thank you everyone. I haven't posted for myself on MN before but have learned what a lovely community it is.

Hoping someone may still be on this thread, I have just done my second jab yesterday and am completely unable to get to sleep until about 3am, it’s killing me! Especially as my little ones are up at 6! Did you find the sleeping eventually went back to normal or did you find anything that helped?
