I’m considering/planning to use Mounjaro and have questions.

As the title says. I haven’t weighed myself for a long time. My dress size is 18. I don’t want to lose loads of weight, maybe 10lbs. I’m guessing with the appetite suppression, to remain healthy, we must force ourselves to eat regularly - protein, veg and fruit. What are people here on the drug eating? Also, after losing most of the desired weight, does anyone here know if it would be okay to use it once or twice a week as an help to a fasting day?

I’d love to hear about the above and anything else experienced users think it would be useful for me to know.

I’m eating more protein but mainly ‘normal’ meals, just smaller portions.

Mounjaro is a weekly injection so you can’t pick and choose days.

I’m not sure I would bother with it if you only want to loose 10lbs. I would give it a good few months to try it out.

CanIGoHomeNowPlease · 13/03/2025 12:27

10lbs is not a lot in the grand scheme of things - I lost 8lbs in my first week of MJ.

Why do you think you'd need the jab? Have you tried to do it without the jab?

Even on the jab I have to make the correct food choices - high protein and fibre meals lots of water etc.

Bristollocalknowledge · 13/03/2025 12:52

You take it once a week. It’s a drug for life so to ensure you don’t regain the weight you will continue to take 2.5 mg dose.

It doesn’t do all of the work of weight loss for you. It just makes it easier. I tend to have greek yoghurt for breakfast with fruit and seeds or nut, lunch some thing like chicken or salmon with veg, or veggie soup with additional chicken for dinner whatever the family is having but I have a smaller portion of or now carbs so this week that’s chicken pad thai, fish with carrots and broccoli, cottage pie, turkey meatballs in a beautiful sauce.

I’m also wondering why you want to take it to only lose 10 lbs and not to get to a healthy bmi.

I had a gastric bypass 5-years-ago. It’s been fantastic. I have lost 7 stone, but can’t quite shift the rest. 10lbs or a stone, would probably still have me in a BMI range of overweight. I just know that I am happy at size 14/16. I still can’t eat large meals of course, but I get hungry in between, so I now probably eat 5 quite small meals a days. I can’t seem to manage less, so I feel Mounjaro might help me over the last hump.

According to my Bariatric Surgeon, BMI is only a useful measure at the higher weight end. Many people in what is considered a healthy BMI are actually underweight. In my younger years (I’m 66 soon), I was a size 12, but weighed 12 and a half stone, at 5’6”, that was in the overweight range of BMI.

I’m 18 on the bottom and 16 on the top and I have 2 1/2 stone to loose before I hit the top of the healthy BMI range.

What are you eating at the moment? Are you getting enough protein. I’m not sure if you can take MJ if you’ve had a by pass.

CanIGoHomeNowPlease · 13/03/2025 13:02

I’ve just googled and you can take it but you’d need to have a good chat with your doctor.

It’s up to you if you want to take it - if you can get it prescribed it can cut your appetite. It can also give you a number of side effects that might not be palatable for 10lbs weight loss.

SilenceInside · 13/03/2025 13:02

I don't really understand why you'd want to take the risks of taking a prescription medication for obesity when you want to lose a small amount of weight and remain in the overweight range. Even taking into account what you're saying about age and BMI.

Maybe your bariatric surgeon could advise on whether they think a GLP-1 medication would be appropriate in your case.

Also, I would advise reading more about how GLP1 medication works. Mounjaro and Wegovy are weekly injections, the medication remains in your system continuously and increases each week as it is not all gone by the time you take the next injection. You can't choose to take them for one day and not for another.

StrikeAlways · 13/03/2025 13:10

I won’t be taking it without a detailed discussion with my pharmacist and possibly also my GP.

On the flip side it took me almost 5 months to lose 10lbs so might not necessarily be a quick fix.

I've been on it since June and I've lost 6 stone. I prioritise protein as many others have suggested but generally eat 'normal' homemade meals but small portions and I don't snack and rarely indulge in sweet things.
You do need to know your weight if you're considering it (as you have to enter this on any website you're ordering from).
I would really do some more research about how it works though (and I don't mean on forums) because it does suggest to me that you don't understand the medication, where you said you'd look to use it 'once or twice a week for fasting'. It really doesn't work like that. I'd also say if you only want to lose 10 lbs it's probably not worthwhile.

That would be fine for me

Are you insulin resistant? Discuss with your GP whether metformin would be a better option for you as 10-14lbs is less of a risk to you than WLI would be.

Have you tried Fast 800? With an IF window of 18/6.

ETA if your bmi is under 30, WLI are not the answer.

StrikeAlways · 14/03/2025 00:21

Thank you. I have researched it and understand the drug. It hadn’t registered with me at first that it’s used weekly, not daily. It seems doctors are happy for doses to be reduced to once a fortnight once most/all of the desired weight loss has been achieved. To clarify why I am only looking to lose 10/14 Ibs I lost just over 7 stone after a gastric bypass 5 years ago, but that last bit just didn’t shift. I want to move down to a size 16, 14 at the lowest. I have some loose skin from my previous weight loss. It’s not horrendous, but I don’t want to be drowning in lose skin and old skin is considerably less elastic than younger skin. I know that I will need to weigh myself and provide my weight when/if applying for the drug.

I’m not insulin resistant. I’m actually in pretty good health. Having dieted most of my life (like lots of us) and I just can’t do it anymore. The bypass has been a wonderful thing. In the early years 3 spoonfuls of food was a big meal. I still don’t eat large meals of course and I rarely eat UPF. I just want the Mounjaro to return me to ‘eating like a bird’, to help me lose the last stone or so. My BMI is over 30.
