Hair thinning

Hello

Has anyone else noticed their hair is getting thinner whilst taking Mounjaro? I’m not sure if it’s my imagination. On NICE guidelines it says one of the side effects of this drug can be alopecia.

It's a possible side effect of weight loss, rather than the medication itself I think. It's called telogen effluvium and is usually temporary and self resolving. I had it for about 4 months, it's stopped now and I have loads of regrowth coming through.

Thanks. That’s good to hear. I also read alopecia is caused by rapid weight loss - although my weight loss isn’t rapid 😂

I seem to go in cycles whether I’m losing weight or not - a thinning cycle and then a regrowth cycle. I’ve been on MJ since Nov and have definitely had quite a bit of regrowth since Dec. Hard to tell! I took Biotin for about a month but then forgot about it. My twin sister is neither losing weight nor on MJ and she goes through the same cycles, so she’s my control. Our hair thickness/thinness is exactly the same.

@silenceinside do you mean weight loss in general, without injections etc? I've lost weight recently just by diet etc and have found my hair has thinned

Any period of weight loss will, more often than not, result in telogen effluvium. It’s not Mounjaro causing it, it’s the weight loss itself.

It usually resolves after about 3 months.

That's a comfort, thank you!

Thanks for your information. That’s encouraging 🙂

I haven’t had any hair loss although I’ve had telogen effluvium from stress in the past, I’ve averaged 1.4lbs per week since October and have tried to keep it around that constant level to not lose much muscle or hair (I found TE more stressful than the event that caused it! So I was hyper aware)
