Should I start mounjaro? Talk me in (or out) of it!

Hi everyone,

I really want to start mounjaro but I'm a bit worried about the side effects and all of the scaremongering surrounding it. But I am very overweight and always have struggled. It's not about having my dream body, I've had 2 kids and couldn't care less about that! My cholesterol is super high and I'm starting to feel the effects of being unhealthy. Please give me the pros and cons! Have a bit of health anxiety so want to make sure it's the right decision for me!

I actually don't even know if it'd be suitable for me?
I'm almost 27
2 children (youngest 3 months old)
Can calorie count well but struggle with mental side of food and always been a binge eater.
5ft 8 and 15.5stone ☹️
High cholesterol and triglycerides, this is my biggest health concern
No other health concerns other than some benign nodules on my thyroid gland (don't know if this is relevant? Someone said injectable WL drugs are linked to thyroid cancer, is this true or just more scare mongering?)
Had gestational diabetes and it scared me, I really never want to become diabetic and I feel like I'm on my way..

I just want to be healthy. Yeah I want to feel and look half decent too but I really want to live a long happy life for my kids 😊

What side effects are you worried about?

You have to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight. Mounjaro helps with that because you feel more like making healthy food choices and you feel fuller quicker. But you have to be motivated to eat less and better.

If you have that motivation and are ready to make the lifestyle changes, this is a pathway to lower weight and better health.

Tbh I’ve found it miraculous.

Titasaducksarse · 06/03/2025 22:32

There is something on the question list before you're prescribed MJ that asks about your thyroid (I'm sure) so you might be precluded anyway.

SilenceInside · 06/03/2025 22:39

Your BMI is 33 so you would qualify for a private prescription for Mounjaro.

The thyroid cancer connection comes from a study done in rodents (mice? rats? Can't remember) where they gave them huge huge overdoses for their whole life span and they showed a small increase in thyroid cancers. It's not been shown in humans, but the manufacturers have a caution about people with a family/personal history of certain specific thyroid cancers should not take Mounjaro.

The thing about taking a weight loss injection is that you can stop if it isn't working for you or if you do end up with side effects that are unmanageable.

For me, it's been transformational, but I was considerably more obese than you when I started at 22 st and 5ft 5. So the decision making was straightforward for me. The benefits were likely to massively outweigh the risks, which has indeed been the case. I've only had a couple of instances of minor side effects but otherwise have been absolutely fine. Better than fine actually.

If I could have started it at 27 I’d have bitten someone’s arm off! My biggest regret is that I didn’t start it sooner, it is truly miraculous, the mental side and the binge eating has just disappeared, it’s so freeing.
My only side effect has been constipation but it’s manageable. I feel so much better and the cloud of doom about my future has gone.

If you need to be talked into it you shouldn’t do it. It’s a potent drug, not a weekend in Clacton.

There are pages and pages of threads with lots of us sharing our honest experiences which might help you to come to an informed decision.

Thanks everyone. Been researching all day and still undecided but think I might go for it! Is it something you realistically have to be on forever or do you stop taking once you're at your desired weight? It's a mixed bag online from what I've seen!

YOU CANNOT POST DISCOUNT CODES ON THIS BOARD NO MATTER HOW MANY KISSES AND EMOJI YOU ADD.

Vitriolinsanity · 07/03/2025 18:40

Fuck it, I've just bought my first one.

Do it.

Worst comes to worst, stop.

Bear2014 · 07/03/2025 19:04

You sound like a great candidate for it really.

I was open minded about sticking with it or not as I was also worried about side effects. Can't afford to be ill all the time with young kids, work etc. But I've felt great on it, no gastro issues at all.

I've been losing about 1kg per week (started 7 weeks ago), not calorie counting but making healthier choices which is easy as you just don't fancy junk. It's so strange and almost like magic - it just flips a switch in your brain and you don't crave any kind of shit.

Bonus effect for me has been I don't really feel like drinking any more either. I wasn't a problem drinker but loved a drink a few times a week, and now I have only had 3-4 drinks total so far this year.

I'm open to staying on it long term, or trying to reduce and stop it. I think maintenance is probably different for everyone.

You can always stop if it's awful.

Same height as you but started at 18 stone in June 24 (well last day of May tb exact). Now 3lb away from healthy BMI (I'm 11 stone 12 now).

Minimal side effects, bit of hair loss at the start but collagen sorted that, constantly feel cold but could be due to lack of layer of blubber.

I just wish this medicine had been around decades ago as would have saved me being obese all my adult life. I have hardly any pics of me with my (now adult) kids as I hated having my photo taken due to my size.
