Restarting Orlistat

Xena66 · 23/02/2025 10:38

I stopped taking Orlistae 8 months ago as I was not in the right place mentally to start my journey. I took it for 6 weeks then stopped.
I am now ready and need to ask can you restart Orlistat?

Would you not consider a weight loss injection like Wegovy or Mounjaro? I wouldn't like orlistat as heard you can get severe diarrhoea and leaking. All it does is block fat absorption.
GLP activators increase insulin and reduce systemic inflammation, so are better as they act in many ways to keep you full and reduce storage of fat.
I've been on mounjaro 4.5 months no side effects and gone from bmi 32 13st to bmi 28.5 11st 8lbs. It's been life changing for stabilising my blood sugar and reducing abdominal fat.

No reason you can’t stop and start orlistat. A friend has done so. However I agree that as well as the unpleasant wet farts and orange oily loose poo it is much less effective than mounjaro or wegovy but of course your gp can easily prescribe orlistat but you will probably have to self fund the others.

Thanks but I am not financially able to fund the injections. So orlistate is my only option

I was in the same position as you, i had used Orlistat before, i put everything I'd lost back on though, I couldn't really afford the injections, then someone on here on a mounjaro thread had mentioned Oviva so I googled them.

Before I knew it I'd gone down that rabbit hole and applied to them, they provisionally accepted me dependant on a referral from my doc which I got. Oviva couldn't get the funding for the jabs for me though but did offer me other options, Orlistat was one. I went with the Total Meal Replacement option, for 8 weeks I had nothing but shakes and soups all provided for me, I'm on week 10 and currently 'refeeding' now but in the first 8 weeks I've lost 3 stone. I no longer wake up in the morning thinking about food, I can take it or leave it, my stomach has shrunk and so has my portion sizes and I'm mindful of stopping when I feel full. I've had a complete mental reset which I would never have had using the jab or orlistat.

I wonder if you would be eligible for something like Oviva, I know I'm only 10 weeks in but for the first time in a long time I can actually see light at the end of tunnel. It might be possible for you too. Good luck!

I’ve tried to get funding but to the the area in which I live it was refused, don’t have the best GP practice. Had a referral for weight management and that took 18 months, but due to me working full time I was never able to join the on line sessions, wasn’t even eligible to see a dietitian. Am desperately trying to save myself, NHS can’t or won’t help. ( I don’t have diabetes, high blood cholesterol or blood pressure so they don’t want to know).
no support at all. Trying the Orlistat again is my only option. Thanks for the advice though

I'd been to the doctor numerous times myself, my doctors always said no, I'd asked them for help last Sept and was told not a chance, they also refused to help with HRT, at one point I couldn't even get clearance for a hearing aid because I was fat. So I have no idea why I even applied to Oviva ... but they've been a big help, if they accept you they'll give you a template letter to send to your doctor, I know I thought 'well there's no point in asking my docs they wont refer me' but I did just to prove myself right, so it came as a shock when my doctors said "yes" and I went on Ovivas waiting list... I waited less than a fortnight, I had a week trialling the shakes and soups and ordering the flavours I liked, then started on the 16th Dec, it's all done on the app, no appointments, I fill in my daily stuff last thing at night before going to bed, all at your own pace.

I was full of doubt, no one would help me, I've asked and asked, no point in asking anymore, I've posts of mine just like yours on here, so I'm pleasantly surprised I'm sat in this position now. It took all of 3 minutes filling out Ovivas forms. It's online, it's free to try, if they say no you've lost nothing.

I've also saved the money I would have spent on food as my food bill for 8 weeks was zero. If I keep this up I'm buying myself a new TV. If I fail then I have enough money to buy 6 months worth of mounjaro ... win win

Try it ... you never know

Thanks for all the advice, looks like Orlistat it is.
I will have to save myself

With mounjaro, you can get a first one for 99 a month, most do 5 doses out if it so that's 20 a week. I've never paid more than 145 for a pen and I'm on the 4th highest dose now. I've saved so much in food bills as it slows your stomach down and suppresses your appetite. I've gone from a pack of crisps a day to one every week, don't eat biscuits anymore, no desserts, the list goes on. Just on my food shopping I've saved 20-25 a week. Lots of people don't crave alcohol or smoking anymore due to the change in dopamine levels so they save a lot. I was never one for takeaways, but some say they save 40 a week on that. More importantly it reduces inflammation so its going to be released for arthritis, alzheimers and its proven to reduce heart disease and failure by 25% in trials. I've lost over 1.5 stones and bmi down to 28.5 and it's reversed my IBS. I'd really recommend it
