Anyone of a ‘normal weight’ using jabs to get rid of belly?

I’m 52, been on HRT for over five years. Was always considered slim. My weight is now 11st5 and I’m 5.5. Typical Apple shape. It’s all on my waist. I exercise, eat well, lift weights blah blah but nothing is shifting it. I’m wondering whether I should mounjaro or similar. I don’t suffer from food noise tho, so not sure if the jab would even work as I could easily go a couple of days without eating much (in Dave I’ve tried fasting etc and that didn’t make a difference to waistline either!) so not sure if a job would have effect, but my god I’m getting desperate! .

In fact - not in Dave!

What is your BMI?

EducatingArti · 18/02/2025 15:31

Unless your BMI is over 30, I don't think you would be able to get it prescribed anyway.

ChaosAndToast · 18/02/2025 15:32

I'm not entirely sure but with your height and weight you wouldn't be eligible for the weight loss injections anyway.

Edenmum2 · 18/02/2025 15:33

How would you get it? I don't think your bmi is high enough

Sulu17 · 18/02/2025 15:34

I'm very similar to you, OP. May I ask what clothes size you are?

UnbeatenMum · 18/02/2025 15:42

I am 5ft5 and was also 11st5 when I looked into weight loss medication (I have high cholesterol). It's not quite a BMI of 27 though, I think you would need to be around 11st10 for that or a lot more for a BMI of 30. So I lost weight with the help of Glucomannan supplements and calorie counting instead (I ate 2 meals a day, relatively low carb, around 1200 calories). I'm 10st3 now and feeling much better, plus my cholesterol is nearly normal. Good luck whatever you decide to do!

Hudsonheights · 18/02/2025 15:43

I used to be 10-12, now I’m 14 (even that is tight on the waist 😫). I’m aware that my BMI wouldn’t get me the jabs on nhs, but would be looking to get it privately if it was an option.

OP posts:
CiderJabs · 18/02/2025 15:48

@Hudsonheights nope - private and nhs the rules are the same - bmi 30+ or 27+ with pre existing conditions. It is an obesity medication and not a magic pill to get rid of belly fat. Please don't take it as you don't need it.

Bluebellsfortwo · 18/02/2025 15:48

No... Even private pharmacies will not give you Mounjaro unless you have a BMI over 30. The rules are the rules and pharmacies all follow the guidelines for the medication.
Honestly, you don't need weight loss injections. Correct me if I'm wrong but at your age some stubborn fat around the midsection is to be expected? Like from menopause etc.

Hudsonheights · 18/02/2025 15:55

Thank you for your responses. I suspected as much. I’m just getting a little desperate I guess as NOTHING I do seems to be working. You hear of all these celebrities (who were all slim in the first place) getting even slimmer having used these jabs and I guess I was thinking maybe they could help me too. But I can’t see how they would anyway if I’m not overeating or eating all the wrong things. I’m guessing the jabs themselves don’t ’make you lose weight’, they just make you not want to eat so you lose weight simply because you’re not eating? I’ve tried that and it didn’t work! Argh!!!

And knowing that stubborn fat around the middle ‘is to be expected’ does not really help!

Yeah exactly. They make you less hungry so you eat less and lose weight.

Celebs aren’t just jabbing themselves, they’ve got chefs, personal trainers, cosmetic surgeons…

mitogoshigg · 18/02/2025 16:05

No, specific exercise would be what helps, pay for a few personal training sessions to work on your areas of concern and continue to eat a good diet

Nobody bar diabetics get it on the NHS. We all pay privately. You need a BMI of 30 for that or 27 plus weight related conditions like high blood pressure. Your BMI is only mildly overweight so you wouldn’t be able to get it private or otherwise.

Isobel201 · 18/02/2025 16:44

Your BMI according to the information you gave in your OP will make it 26. I wouldn't do it, you are just slightly overweight.

SilenceInside · 18/02/2025 16:49

@Hudsonheights when you say you eat well but cannot lose weight, do you mean you have been in a calorie deficit of at least 500 cals for weeks but not lost any weight, or not lost any noticeable weight from your abdomen?

dramaaaalamaaaa · 18/02/2025 17:17

I'm in a different country and the weight loss medication feels to be freely available here now (except that you have to pay for it). The adverts have gone from targeting obese people to showing pictures of slimmer ladies who just want to maintain weight loss, or lose 5 lbs. I saw one the other day that did have a very slender lady with a bit of belly fat and they indicated that she was pre-diabetic and this would help. If you are concerned about that, maybe get your blood tested.

MounjaroOnMyMind · 18/02/2025 17:24

Google "wheat belly" and see if that applies to you.

abracadabra1980 · 18/02/2025 17:27

I feel your pain. I'm the same as you but smaller in height (5') and have a BMI of about 21.5. I now have two stomachs and when I bend over the bottom one hangs down over my pubes - wtf? In my previous pre-menopausal life, I had a stable weight unless I drank too much wine, and only one stomach-never flat, never ripped, but acceptably 'flat looking' in clothes. I can't shift it for love more money as I have a weak back and that limits my exercise. It's very depressing.

MightyGoldBear · 18/02/2025 17:29

Just a thought do you have diastasis recti?

2025ishere · 18/02/2025 17:32

There are potentially serious side effects, but for people who are obese the pros outweigh the risks of the medication. Doesn’t sound like you’re obese though.

Have you thought about why it is a problem for you to be a different shape to how you perhaps were when you were younger? If you are a healthy weight it might be worth thinking whether it is worth the risk of trying to obtain obesity medication if you aren’t obese.
Why is it not helpful to be told that a bit of a tummy is to be expected? I’m not trying to be mean just thinking that there are many ways to be beautiful as we age. I meet a lot of old people at work and it only takes a minute or two for their personality to shine through and suddenly they are lovely people even though when they first walk through the door they look old. I guess I’m learning from this how it really is the people we are that make us attractive.

Op, no one gets the jabs on the nhs unless they have diabetes, it starts in th4 summer, via tier 3 weight loss clinics. Which you can only access if you’re eligible for bariatric surgery, the waiting list is close to a year and then you need to do a one or two year program, then the majority will be offered surgery not the jabs, of the millions eligible the nhs will offer 300k people a year the injections, s tiny minority of those in the most serious circumstances. GPs will not be able to prescribe for weight loss.

privstely you can buy as others said, with health conditions and 27 bmi or 30 and none, new guidlines mean gp’s have to be informed, and put a stop to it, if the patient is lying, and it needs to be on your nhs record you’re taking it.

these are not drugs to be taken lightly, no one at your starting weight should be injecting themselves with this medication, the reason people can take them is due to the very high risks of obesity ,,,. cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart attack, to name but a few, where the risks outweigh, by far the risks of the drugs, obesity for example is the leading cause of cancer.

when you say you’ve tried everything, are you sure, you’re in a calorie deficit and not losing weight, or is the truth you were thinking you’d found an easy answer.
