Mounjaro and vomiting

pinkwillowtree · 16/02/2025 20:31

Hey! I want to start Mounjaro, I have quite a bit of weight to shift, but I also have a very big phobia of being sick and during the consultation, I was told the risk of vomiting is very high! So I've not started yet.

Please can you tell me your experiences with side effects and nausea / sickness? Thank you.

About 1 in 10 people experience mild side effects which can include nausea and vomiting. My personal experience is that I've been sick once during 32 weeks on Mounjaro, after about 2 months or so. Nothing at all since then.

You have to weigh up whether losing weight is more vital for you than managing your emetophobia.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 16/02/2025 22:20

35 weeks and no nausea or vomiting at all. Only side effects have been occasional constipation/ diarrhoea and a weird taste in my mouth.

IHateMozzies · 16/02/2025 22:25

No sickness for me x

Titasaducksarse · 16/02/2025 22:28

Zero of either for me

To begin with as I was getting used to the dose, I felt a bit rough. It’s VITAL that you drink as much water as possible- aim for 3L a day - if you’re struggling because of the cold, as I do, top up your water bottle with hot water from the kettle and it makes it soooo much easier

I’ve been on MJ since July and I’ve only just been told about this trick! It really works.

the only time I’ve been ill is eating heavy/fatty foods, or too much too late and alcohol ( conference in USA)

so eat small, eat clean and eat early.

1 in 10 is a small number. Give it a go - Juniper offer 28day money back promise if I recall correctly. So if you’re worried, choose someone who has money back offers and try the medication for a month.

juniper also offers you lots of support/videos etc and access to a health coach. Can highly recommend them. They are more expensive but in the beginning that support is so worth it. You can switch easily to another provider once you have got the hang of things.

I’ve been on since July, starting weight 101 kg, now 76kg. Pleased as punch!

I also have a vomiting phobia. I've never vomited before in my life, not even as a baby. Spoke to my GP about it many years ago and he said around 10% population don't have a vomiting reflex and that I could get very ill as a result.
Anyway 4 months in no side effects, I do get to a point of being very full and can't tolerate food in my mouth anymore so have to remove it. I do get nausea eg with tummy bugs but I've never gone on to vomit

scanni · 16/02/2025 23:20

I haven't been sick and have been taking it for 4 months nearly. You do need to make sure to eat properly though. A lot of peole feel sick becsue they don't eat enough and others get sick because they are still eating greasy, fatty heavily spiced foods.

PencilPleat · 16/02/2025 23:36

I sympathise OP as I have this problem too. It’s the one thing that is holding me back from starting MJ.

I am considering (and researching) starting on a very low dose, say 1mg, and increasing slowly in small increments. I suspect it will mean slow weight loss but I can live with that.

I realise this is not the protocol for using the medication and some people think you shouldn’t tinker the dosage but I am desperate to find a way to make it work for me so if I go ahead (and I’m still hesitating) I think this is what I will do.

pinkwillowtree · 17/02/2025 04:39

@PencilPleat it's horrible isn't it :(? I think I may do this as well! Good idea. Thank you!

@Mysticmaiden2024 oooo I'd like to have that haha! I haven't vomited since a child but have come close and retched when I got norovirus / pregnancy. Glad you got no side effects!!

I could not tolerate a weight loss drug ( Ozempic which is very similar to Mounjaro) and was someone who vomited a lot on it, to the extent that I had to give up after a couple of weeks.

So while most people don’t have this reaction, you do need to be prepared for the fact that it is a well known side effect that affects some people. Feeling nauseous is way more common & isn’t pleasant either so I do think you need to consider if you will be able to cope with those feelings if they occur.

Feb2025start · 17/02/2025 06:54

I'm only halfway through week 3 but so far have only felt very, very mild nausea once (after eating too much of a roast when my body had told me I was full!) - no other side effects either, other than being colder than usual. I have been drinking peppermint tea which is recommended for nausea, and lots and lots of water plus daily electrolytes. Also eating small, regular meals and no rich, fatty, sugary stuff.

Give it a go - you generally only hear the horror stories as why would anyone bother to make a post saying that they're absolutely fine?! But there are many many of us who are! Giving it a go can't hurt 🙂

2.5 is a low dose.

2.5 is a low dose.

Yes, and some people still react badly to it. It's clear from studying the posts on these threads that some people are much more sensitive than others and you don't know until you start which group you'll be in.

For those of us who are battling severe fear about the side-effects an ultra cautious approach may be the only way we can deal with it.

9ToGoal · 17/02/2025 10:13

Try oral semaglutide to start with, you take the pills daily so if you get those side effects you can stop immediately rather than have the long lasting injection. I know it's not the same medication as mounjaro but it is an option when your fear is vomiting and it has a weight loss effect. Should at least give you some reassurance if you don't get side effects @pinkwillowtree

I've been on it for four days I've had the runs and been sick , also acid indigestion and awful sulphur burps😳🤢today tho I'm feeling much better ,I knew what to expect your body has to get used to the drug I'm 100% happy with my decision and looking forward to loosing the menopausal 3 stone I've gained

PurpleCoo · 22/04/2025 07:56

I haven't vomited once. I did my research beforehand to learn what foods might trigger vomiting. I eat smaller portions and don't eat rich, greasy or fatty foods. In fairness, you don't want to eat those things on Mounjaro anyway. I do eat a lot of spicy food, but as I cook from scratch, I choose how spicy I make things, and have gradually increased the spice. That's another point actually I eat clean and don't touch UHPs. I never touch ready meals or sauces.

I am also only on 3.75mg despite having taken 10 doses now. I am keeping my dose as low as possible to a) avoid side effects such as vomiting and b) keep weight loss at a steady 1kg a week to avoid gallstones, loose skin, hair falling out and all the other undesirable things associated with rapid weight loss.

This seems to work. Most other people sticking to low doses and clean eating also seem to avoid side effects

PencilPleat · 25/05/2025 17:57

Just wondering how you're doing now @Regy21 ?

And did you start mounjaro @pinkwillowtree ? If so, how has it been going?

I'm afraid I'm still prevaricating! Very much want to start but fear is still holding me back.

I’m so glad you’ve said that. I have been really, really sick and sore for 4-5 days now too and felt truly dreadful. I was beginning to wonder if I needed to go to the hospital. But thankfully I have woken up feeling a lot better. Good luck with your journey.

BowBelle13 · 29/09/2025 13:54

I started Mounjaro on 2.5 and apart from mild nausea and a bit of headaches which resolved themselves by drinking much more water than I used to, I was fine and lost a good amount of weight. Until I moved up to 5.Total nightmare 4 weeks where 3-4 ays after the jab I would be violently and I mean violently sick, Vomiting, diarrhea, the works. And this on very bland no alcohol no dairy no greasy foods, nothing. I have now given up and am going back to consult about other options. I did lose 10 kilos in 2 months but cannot continue wiping out 2-3 days every week over this, I think we all have to bear in mind that like ALL meds each person will react differently. If it had been severe nausea I coud have coped till hopefully it settled down, but this was way too extreme. But my experience is obviously very much the minority.

Millionaura · 29/09/2025 14:25

I have vomited twice/three times a week since starting. Now is week 6. I have stuck to all the rules, eating clean etc. I also feel nauseous over the first 4 days. This is on 2.5. As a result I will not be increasing my dose. It depends what you can tolerate.

MumofSpud · 29/09/2025 14:42

I have had nausea but no actual sickness
Am on 5mg (was in 2.5 for the first 2 months)
Things I have done / am doing which may help-
Water intake is good
much reduced caffeine intake
Peppermint tea
No carbs
no sugary / fatty stuff

Crisps were my downfall and last week I ate 10(first crisps since I started in August) and felt so sick I had to go and lie down! And I used to be able to polish off a large ‘share’ (!) bag no problem !!
