GP prescription - repeat process

I have got my first Mounjaro pen on prescription (T2 diabetes plus obese) from GP but it was all finally decided over the phone after referral to the GP diabetic specialist, and I never got to ask explicitly about how repeats are done.

I thought from my conversation with the GP that I would be on the current dose just for the length of this pen, and that the higher dose pens would be prescribed automatically.

However, it is has been added to my repeat prescriptions at the current dose.

Is anyone else on a GP prescription (England)? How has it worked for you - have you had to get a new appointment each time you want to go onto the higher dose?

They may well want to do a review rather than just put you on a higher dose .

Do the request via an e-consult and explain specifically what you want.

E-consults aren't a thing here yet - I can ask for a phone appointment but there's usually a 3 - 4 week wait so may struggle to get one by the time the pen runs out.
I'll have to go into the surgery on Monday and get them to clarify what they expect me to do.

I have a monthly review with the diabetes nurse (by phone) who then increases my dose or not. It's not on a repeat and is prescribed on a month by month basis.

The way the prescription works for diabetes is given is different to for weight loss, as their focus is on controlling the diabetes, rather than weight loss, they may move you to 5mg, and hold you, it depends on your blood sugars.

you can call them, and ask, but remember their objective is just to control the diabetes.

My Hba1c has been back within normal limits for over a year (and my daily bloods are always within target) so I think my GP has tacitly accepted that the main benefit for me will be weight loss. I managed to speak with the surgery today and I've got a higher dose on repeat now with review after 2 months on 5mg.
