Eating Out whilst taking Mournjaro

SorryAboutTheWeight · 10/02/2025 18:22

I've been taking Mournjaro for 6 weeks now and doing fine - lost 21lbs and no side effects of any note. However, I've made every meal at home so far, which has made it easy to stick to non greasy, high fiber food.

However some friends I haven't seen for a few years have asked me to stay and go out for a curry and a few drinks - very much what we used to do in the past. I'm Ok telling them about the diet and it won't be a problem cutting back on the booze, but I admit to some anxiety about a curry as I've seen a few websites saying stay away from greasy / fatty foods.

I could suggest we eat somewhere else but I'd really like to go with what they are suggesting and go for the least problematic dishes - maybe some plain rice, a chapati and a veg main?

Anyone else eaten out like this whilst taking the jabs? Any suggestions - I'd be really grateful. TIA.

I have had an Indian a couple of times, I’ve eaten tandoori meat, just tandoori chicken, lamb or prawns, so no sauce, and I have a salad with it, both mixed and onion. however I don’t eat a lot of carbs as I feel over full quickly and find them empty calories, so prioritise protein and veg/salad. I’ve been fine both times, no issue.

SilenceInside · 10/02/2025 18:37

I wouldn't eat rice or a bread, I'd stick to a dry dish (tandoori), or perhaps a tomato based sauce, then salad or possibly a dhal. But not eat anywhere near a normal restaurant portion.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 10/02/2025 18:37

I went to India and lived on curry for 2 weeks, while taking the 7.5mg jab. I was fine, altho I ate a lot less that I would have normally. I tend to find that greasy/oily foods go straight through me while on MJ, but currys were ok.

As an aside, I do find that spicier food, which I have always been able to handle and enjoy, have been giving me a little bit of stomach pain since using MJ. Its not enough to stop be, but it's there in the background.

Cantbesure · 10/02/2025 19:19

@SilenceInside why wouldn't you eat rice or bread?

This is exactly what I've done and been fine

@Cantbesure rice and bread tend to set off some digestive discomfort for me at the moment, plus I really don't fancy eating them ever whilst on Mounjaro. It seems like a waste of calories to me, I'd rather eat protein and veg first. It's totally personal to me, I do appreciate that.

Cantbesure · 10/02/2025 19:33

Ah I see @SilenceInside. I've been lucky with side effects. I def eat less carbs food but wouldn't cut them out completely.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 10/02/2025 19:36

Do you eat meat? I think the lowest fat thing to have is chicken tikka with salad, maybe with a bit of boiled rice or whole meal chapati. If you have to have small portions then just have a starter size.

Bibulous · 10/02/2025 20:32

I've had chicken biryani which was good as it doesn't have a sauce. I just ate half of it and let the people I was with hoover up the rest! It went well with raita which is not much more than yoghurt and cucumber plus a little bit of saag aloo on the side.

HorrorFan81 · 10/02/2025 20:34

Id definitely go for chicken or prawn tandoori with mixed veg or salad

NewDogOwner · 10/02/2025 20:37

Small / starter dishes. Nothing too oily. Oily/ high fat dishes or bread can set off diarrhoea and it can be sudden.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 10/02/2025 20:57

I eat out a lot and have had several curries. I love a chicken or king prawn saag and a cauliflower bhaji!!

Mind you, my gastric side effects have been fairly minimal throughout!

I’m the same, no digestive issues, but I’d just feel full and bagged up, I’d rather the meat and veg.

Feb2025start · 10/02/2025 22:35

Yes I'd agree with PPs, chicken or prawn tandoori with salad/raita/plain rice is what I'd go for. Careful of the veggie dishes (dhal, saag aloo, chana masala etc plus anything with paneer) as they're often laden with ghee or cream!

Tailfeather · 10/02/2025 22:44

I've been fine with curries. And with booze. The thing I enjoy most about Mounjaro us that I can go about my life as normal, whereas on previous 'diets' I would feel really restricted or guilty eating out.

letshavetea · 11/02/2025 06:48

i do suffer from nausea and heartburn if I eat too rich (oily) food on MJ. Have had success with eating veggie dishes such as Dahl, chickpea curry and veg curries. Also plain rice and raita. If having meat I find even plain chicken tikka very filling! If you choose carefully you’ll be fine.

As long as you don’t overdo it, you will be fine!

Sometimes you just have to go with the flow and try to pick the best option from what’s available.

If I can pick the place, my trick is to go for either a steak house or a sushi place. As that makes choosing what to eat easy, it’s healthy and I still hit my protein goal.

Hobbesmanc · 11/02/2025 10:14

I've only eaten at an Indian once and I was nervous so just had some daal. But we've just come back from a holiday in Thailand. I found most stuff even the spiciest choices were fine althought I stuck
To drier choices. Stir fries and noodles rather than the curries.

crumbsonmyface · 11/02/2025 10:19

Everyone is different, so are you able to eat a takeaway at home to trial run something? I was really worried about eating anything out after reading so many horror stories. But as long as I don't eat beyond feeling full and have small portions I've been able to eat out with things like pasta, indian takeaway, small amounts of pizza, chip shop chips, nandos etc.

The only thing that really gave me stomach ache was making a dal curry at home, gastric distress 😂

SorryAboutTheWeight · 11/02/2025 19:48

Many thanks to everyone who has replied. It's been quite reassuring and I've got some tips for what I'll order.

You can't go wrong with a chicken shashlick in that situation if you eat meat - big chunks of chicken, onion and veg and not that saucy but still tasty. Or saag paneer if you're veggie - plenty of protein in the cheese chunks there and again not too saucy. If you do feel the need for a carby side then go for a roti and just eat a small amount.

Pepperama · 11/02/2025 20:13

I’m a few months in - have been losing slow and steady rather than quite fast like you, but have a fairly normal diet with everything included, just a lot less. Eating out or in hotels several times a month is a regular part of my job so was very relieved there are few things that really upset my stomach. Basically -for me, anything deep fried is evil, everything else seems ok in small quantities

Redlightbulb · 11/02/2025 23:00

I also think it will depend on when the meal is in relation to your jab.
For me when eating out the further the meal is from your jab the less side effects.

WorriedRelative · 12/02/2025 21:36

Go for it, I have eaten all types of food out with no issues. Chinese, Thai, Indian, Italian, tapas, Greek pub food all fine, just small portions and lighter choices.

I couldn’t cut them either, I still enjoy a balance diet, although I am conscious of too much bread and often choose alternatives. We all must do what suits us.
