Hypoglycaemia on Mounjaro

Josephi · 07/02/2025 18:35

Has anyone experienced hypoglycaemia on Mounjaro? I am not diabetics and I have never had any issues with blood sugar levels. Now, I keep waking up at 4am and I thought it could be hypoglycaemia. I am wearing Freestyle Libre (for research :) and my glucose level is low, hoovering around 4.1 mmol/L. I am not even of full starting dose of 2.5 mg and I have some suppression but still eating. Food wise, good, home made, protein, vegetables, good carbs.

I get low blood sugar yes, I think a mix between th4 drug and the fact I don’t really eat anything with sugar. I pop a glucose sweet if I feel dizzy and suspect it’s that and it resolves quickly. I think it is quite common.

Josephi · 07/02/2025 19:29

@Shrinkingrose thank you for sharing your experience. I will see if hypoglycaemia correlates with my 4am awakening this night. Apart from this it could be fine, but I don’t sleep well anyway (perimeno) so this is killing me.

Hi can I ask if you are still suffering with this and whether you did chalk it up to hypoglycemia?
I'm suffering with what I think is hypoglycemia myself and really struggling to get enough food in to resolve it properly. I'm only a day into my second injection and I feel absolutely terrible.

Can you really not tolerate food, as in put it in and chew? Will you be sick? If you can’t eat to this extent and not even on the starting dose of 5mg yet. You will be very unwell. Hopefully it resolves, if not you may not be able to tolerate it sadly.

Hi, I took my second dose of 2.5mg late last night. My first week the side effects were quite tolerable- i was able to eat a healthy amount.
This morning following my second dose I've been barely able to eat anything. ive forced down some toast, a banana and some wine gums and jellies just to try and get my blood sugar up. This seems to have helped with the hypo symptoms.

I think maybe I've still had a fair amount of last week's dose still in my system and when I've taken my second dose it's just topped it up to a level i just can't tolerate.

I'm going to grind out this week and see how i improve then make a call on whether i a) discontinue all together, b) space my dosing out over a longer period or c) take a reduced dose (my pharmacist did suggest either b or c)

I got hypoglycaemia early on, mostly in the middle of the night - waking up shaking, which is a horrible feeling. Couple of things that helped:

  • eating a protein snack before bed (used to have 100g of protein yoghurt) and magnesium
  • if I wake up in the night feeling off or shaky I have some glucose tablets by my bed which help quickly
  • but the biggest thing that's helped is actually increasing my sugar intake in the day. I feel so much better for it. Now I have sugar in tea or some chocolate, and I've stopped having the middle of the night episodes!
Josephi · 15/02/2025 08:11

@Anna208 I tried protein powder before going to bed but it didn’t help. Now I have two spoons of mixed nuts butter with cinnamon and this does help. I have one short episode around 3 am instead of several. It really disturbed my sleep but now I sleep so much better.

Yes I get it. I'm not diabetic and was tested just a month or two before I started on mounjaro. However, since I've started my blood sugar has been going v low. Once I nearly passed out and my husband almost called an ambulance but I've bought dextrose sweets now which I take when I feel myself getting faint and dizzy.

After the almost collapsing incident I bought a blood glucose monitor and my bloods are consistently in the danger zone and undetectable (lower than 1 or 2) but I think low blood sugar is normal for me, so although this sounds scary low, I don't think it is for me. If I take a dextrose tablet I can get it back up to 4 ISH.

I have to try really hard to make myself eat enough and little and often to avoid feeling faint. I also feel v cold much of the time and exhausted.

I'd like to ask the doctor about it once I get to goal weight but I'm scared to say anything now because I know they'll just say to stop taking mounjaro and I don't want to because it's literally saved my life seeing the pounds drop off.

Hypoglycemia is listed as a side effects for diabetics but not for regular people. However, I am definitely getting it so I think more research is needed.

Thanks for your respons. That sounds exactly like what is happening to me. Waking early hours shaky and feeling sick. I've just ordered myself a blood glucose testing kit.
I went to the walk in centre yesterday morning because I felt so poorly and when they tested my blood the glucose level wasn't in hypo territory but I suspect that's because I'd drank a load of lucozade and eaten some fruit pastilles the hour beforehand.
I've decided I can't continue on the medication as these slde effects are not tolerable for me. In fact the whole experience had positively terrified me.
I'm keen to speak to somebody who has stopped taking the drug and knows how long it will take me to feel back to my normal self again but everyone I've spoken to seems to have just ploughed on through.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Yes I know what you mean. Nothing I've found online suggests the drug causes hypoglycemia for non diabetics. I do suspect mine is worse because I'm unable to eat any significant amount of food due to complete aversion to it so it's probably compounding issue.
As I've said to the other poster, I've decided to discontinue with the medication because I can't bear to feel like this anymore. Ive been unable to function for the last 3 days and I have two young children and work full time so I can't chance this happening again. I keep going to bed hoping I'll feel better in the morning but inevitably I've had more low blood sugar episodes overnight making me feel really unwell.
I'd really like some anecdotes from people who have discontinued due to side effects to find out realistically how long it'll take me to get back to normal.
Best of luck with your weight loss anyway

1 or 2 is not normal for anyone - that is actually dangerously low.

I know! I want to speak with the doc, but I don't want them to tell me to come off mounjaro as for my mental health, it is the best thing ever to have happened to me. I don't think the doc will get that. I am not a million miles from goal. Should be there June ish. Then I'll go straight to doc. In the meantime I'm monitoring my blood sugar, but yes it is undetectable a lot of the time and the manual says go straight to doc!! Not sure how I'm still walking and talking but I do think low blood sugar is normal for me. :) I am getting better at controlling it though. Just had breakfast and a cup of tea and sugar was 6!! Which is the highest it's been in weeks so quite happy about that. Maybe my body is also getting used to the mounjaro now ...

You are taking diabetic medication, it's purpose is to lower blood sugar. You need to stop whether you want to or not, blood sugar levels that low are dangerous. Seizures, comas and death are worse than not losing a few lbs.

If you are only 3/4 months from goal you should have developed habits to keep losing weight by a calorie deficit.

crumbsonmyface · 18/02/2025 11:09

@HellNoWay - what are you typically eating each day? I've definitely found my hypo episodes have completely stopped since adding sugar back into my day to day diet. I was trying to eat as healthy as possible at the beginning, but clearly just needed more carbs/sugars.

MzHz · 18/02/2025 11:11

I have had issues in the past, thinking it was electrolytes but then realised it was blood sugar.

I made protein smoothies with powder, whizzed up some frozen mango or banana and that helped me.

Blushingm · 18/02/2025 15:37

1 or 2 is getting close to coma! I hope you aren't driving

You could be causing permanent physical damage to your body having blood glucose levels that low

I understand being heavier affects your mental health but having a blood glucose level this low will affect your mood, your perception, your thinking as well as all the physical risks to you and others

Blushingm · 18/02/2025 15:39

1 or 2 is not normal for anyone! Its dangerous. Please see your GP asap @HellNoWay

Thanks! Actually.i do think you have a point here. I had some of my son's chocolate Easter egg last night and this morning, and today my blood sugar has been the best it's ever been, so maybe I need to start eating a bit more sugar again! I have been scared to as been wanting to eat healthy but I hink I need it :)

I know I should see the gp but I also know they will tell.me to stop mounjaro. I know people probably think I'm mad but I have never been able to loose weight before and I can't stop mounjaro now. I just can't. This is the first time ever I have been able to see my weight coming down. It changing my life. I do think I'm getting better at controlling the blood sugar.

AnotherVice · 18/02/2025 19:08

@HellNoWay Being slim will be no use if you're dead. This is so irresponsible.
