Really want to try Mounjaro but scared of side effects

Hi guys,

I'm really keen to try mounjaro after being obese for years and failing every diet going, but I'm so scared of the horror stories and side effects I've heard about!

If I do get the side effects, and decide I don't want to continue, how long does one injection stay in your system for?

Also, is it true it reduces effectiveness of oral contraception by 66% ??? Even on the lowest dosage?

Thanks.

If you read the little leaflets that come with any medication you’d never take them. The side effects are well known and to me feel logical if you understand how the medication works.
Slow gastric emptying = possibility of nausea, burping, flatulence etc.
Make sure you google the side effects of being very fat too. They’re worse.
It’s a brilliant medication but you need to understand it. Seen too many people who hit fat by eating junk and doing no exercise think it will work like magic if they continue with their usual diet.
Take the jabs. They don’t hurt. Eat small amounts of well chosen highly nutritious and high fibre food and drink lots of water and do exercise. Good luck.

No idea about the contraceptive pill effects. Try Google and use secondary protection. .

The half life is around 7 days. That is it will halve in your system every seven days.

Only oral contraception, because of the slower gastric emptying. If you take the pill, it'll take longer to leave your stomach and get into your system. It obviously doesn't affect other methods of contraception (including condoms!).

Thank you. That's very true. I do hear a lot more positive stories than negative, but there are some people who say one jab put them out of action for months, or sent them to A&E. I suppose, as you said, it's the same with any medication and they're not all completely foolproof.

Thank you. We're already using 2 forms of protection, but I also take it for period control and it sounds like my periods will go AWOL if I take Mounjaro Sad

My husband had his first injection a week ago Monday. He is only going back to work today.
Clearly it is worse for some people than others. The side effects lasted beyond when he was due the next injection. He didn’t take it, and it’s put me off too.

GrammarTeacher · 04/02/2025 06:30

And he ate very very little (nothing for 3 days he couldn’t) and exercise was out of the question.
I would ensure you’re prepared to have that kind of reaction. You probably won’t. But I wouldn’t take it at the start of a busy week.

It's a life changer. Yeah there are some side effects. But I'm taking mine to support diabetes control and it's totally worth it. Your body tells you how to manage it I find. I know what's going to trigger the nausea and upset tummy and I'm learning what to eat. I'm still having plenty of things I enjoy albeit in small portions, but no snacking, no treats between meals, less booze, much fewer carbs.

I did two months on the entry level dose as I felt it was working. I'm on the second level now and I'm a little queasy occasionally. But I had that from my diabetes meds anyway. Lost two stone in two months. Feeling great about that.

daffodilandtulip · 04/02/2025 06:35

I get projectile vomiting from any antibiotic, all herbal meds give me severe shakes, I tried antidepressants once and they made me very ill.

The only side effects I've had from Mounjaro was being sick the day after I ate chocolate and nuts for the first time. Oh and almost 4 stone weight loss.

Plus, my heart rate is down by about 50bpm, I sleep well, my oedema has vanished, no plantar fasciitis, I don’t have the shakes if I don’t snack for a couple of hours, I walk at twice the pace and I can exercise without dying. I decided these things were worth the risk.

This is the problem of these drugs being almost exclusively not available via your GP

Because for any other medication the GP would talk through the possible side effects (actually many times they dont even have a conversation with you) but at least they would be au fait with it and pepared to have a conversation

Because the vast majority buy it privately you often cant have that sort of discourse with the GP because its not really something they have a hand in so people are left to try to seek advice from the internet.

And I never see people panicking and tut tutting about the side effects of obesity, why is that?

And like others say, all medication has side effects, Ive had some awful side effects from prescribed medication over the years, you just go back to your GP and say I cant take this anymore and switch to something that suits better/wait until the side effects subside.

IHateMozzies · 04/02/2025 13:19

I’ve not had any major symptoms. Mainly tiredness and only a couple days of an upset stomach. It effects everyone differently and no two weeks are the same!

Notmymarmosets · 25/09/2025 20:25

Half the med has gone from your body by day five. You can stop at any point. It reaches a peak on days 2-3. After that if you don't take more your side effects if any, will decrease.
